watching this for the first time with you I'm just as stunned, this is amazing at showing a characters light and dark sides. Reminds me of Berserk and how Guts isn't really a hero but a man out for revenge. This reminds you that Thorfins goal may be something good but the life he's living isn't. Great show.

One thing that has really pulled me in on this show is just how realistically complex a person's character is. Something that a lot of shows don't really pull off, especially in American television shows.

J Johnson

This is sort of a representation of the danger of single-mindedly following a single goal, and using whatever means necessary to accomplish it. Thorfinn knows what he's doing is wrong, but he's stuck on revenge so will do whatever it takes to achieve it.

It's one thing to learn about the brutality of what life was like back then. It's another to see it, or at least a pretty realistic depiction of it.

Phillip Ribbink

I always found the dynamic between Askeladd and Thorfinn to be interesting. Askeladd takes on a sort of mentor/antagonist role in Thorfinn's life. Granted the mentor part is definitely more in the tough love/indifferent category.

I love how the creator named him Askeladd who is supposed to be a Norwegian fary tail hero, but instead here he is a villain, hehe

SpazBoysComedy

Yea, it's a really complex relationship. On one hand, I think Askeladd will actually be good for Thorfinn's development. On the other hand, I'd be giggly happy if Thorfinn stabbed him in the neck! :-D

I'm a little late but what did thorfinn did there at the end? Why did he burn the house down? Was it the lady's house ?

Anonymous

He burnt down a random house to signal Askeladd and the vikings to come raid the village. It wasn't the old lady's but he pretty much got her killed, unfortunatly.
