Curtis, Gin and Tom Petty are the only Soul Reapers that Aizen really shows respect to. Tousen is obsessed with Aizen and even cut off Grimmjow's arm because he thought he disrespected him. Gin interacts with Aizen more like a colleague, and for good reason, he is unbelievably strong in his own right. Gin could kill Ulquiora with little effort. His Bankai is just too fast to properly deal with. He also never fights seriously in the entire series. Even against Ichigo, he was only testing him, since he knew that Ichigo was Aizen's pet project, as evidenced by Aizen asking what Gin was planning to do.

The people of Karakura Town were put to sleep by the Research and Development Institute when the town was swapped with the fake. I know you're already far ahead and might have remembered, but that was said at the beginning of the fights between the Gotei 13 and Aizen's people, so you might also have already forgotten all about it.
