not a spoiler: Otohime has observation haki (obviously used when she dodged the bullets) and hers is special as it lets her commune with peoples hearts (u find out about this in a databook, i just think it makes her a little cooler)

Notice how when it shows arlong getting the brand it covers it quick so you never get to see if he was a slave before or not, I think oda did that so you judge arlong based on his actions rather than any past he may or may not have had. Just my speculation.
