The dude at the end is Major Gilbert's Brother. We saw him first give Violet to Gilbert back in episode two, which was set 4 years prior. Edit: I really should read the description lol!

Violet and the princess are very similar, both young girls in love with someone older because they were the only one to show them kindness and look at them for who they are (everyone saw Violet as a weapon and the princess as a marriage opportunity) . They both have to learn how to be independent, Violet not relying on orders from someone else and the Princess not relying on basically her adoptive mother.

Alberta and the Princess are as close as a real mother and daughter. Given that we never see the Queen and the fact that highborn ladies didn't raise their own children in those days. Plus given the fact that many servants in Alberta's position (she seems to be somewhere between Nanny, Head Maid and Governess) were usually unmarried, in addition to her advanced age. She probably doesn't have any children of her own. When you devote pretty much your entire life to something, especially a person, you tend to get attached.
