It was in the manga though, so thats removed canon from fmab rather than an added filler in fma. That being said, the event was fairly different in the manga, for example this happened in the present, Ed being 15, in the manga. Not like here where he is 12

What I like about FMA as opposed to FMAB is that we get to see more of Ed before he is a State Alchemist. That in itself is not everything because we can see from this episode that Ed does not know how to transmute something without a circle. This way, alchemy is not readily available and we have to see more ingenuity by Ed in situations. Also, FMA makes Hughes better than FMAB.
