I do feel bad for Moria here. The anime didn’t really explain it that well in this episode, but basically he lost all of his old crew in the New World and as a result became more fat and lazy. He also became traumatized from the experience and decided to start making zombies in order to not experience the same loss ever again. Because the zombies were never alive, their death wouldn’t cause him to feel the same pain as before since he could just replace them. It’s the rare situation of a sympathetic villain in one piece.

Honestly, in my opinion, this is one of the more badass moves in the show. Shadows Azgard just feels so... menacing!

I don't think Moria absorbed 1.000 shadows; why? Because Oars was #900 and Luffy used 100 shadows that escaped afterwards. That would mean Moria had over 1.100 shadows in his command before the fight, so why wasn't Oars, "The Special Zombie" numbered #1.000? So by logic (and math) Moria is now juiced with max of 800 shadows!

Although the shadow-less bunch says the 100 shadows that Luffy absorbed were "returned" or "escaped", I believe the implication is that they leave his body and go back to being free-roaming shadows, otherwise all they would have had to do was stick the zombie in the wrong person and then it would go back to the original owner anyway, negating the need to even confront Moria. Adding up to the 900 zombie shadows and 100 free shadows. (The shadows outside of the zombies are not unobtainable for Moria, they're just not being used in any Zombies atm)

As flame had mentioned, the anime does a poor job of explaining what Moria was going on about with his losing his crew and whatnot. Years before the current timeline, Moria was an up and coming rookie with a hot-shot crew that tried to make it big in the New World, the 2nd and more dangerous half of the Grand Line. Almost immediately upon entering, Moria's entire crew was slaughtered effortlessly by one of the major powers in the New World, one of the 4 (Pirate) Emperors; a Yonkou. After that, Moria retreated to the Grand Line and started on his goal to create an unkillable Zombie Crew that he could march in and take over the New World with. And then Luffy and crew came by and fucked it all up XD

luffy broke his back and made him humble.

You know, it almost seems like Zoro gets stronger every time he bleeds. And he's doing a LOT of bleeding, this arc.
