The moment Tanjiro heard lightning was the exact moment Zenitsu used his sixfold thunder breathing to slice off creepy spider guy's head clean off.

Too bad we don't get to see more interactions between Zenitsu and his adopted grandpa, it's really sweet watching the two of them together.

This episode actually explains why Zenitsu is such a badass when he sleeps. He is actually just as strong when he is awake but he is too scared to even draw his sword. When he sleeps, he believes everything that he does is just in his dream so he has no reason to fear anything. In actuality, it's not a dream he is perceiving, it's reality. However, he is not aware of this fact. And thanks to his incredible hearing he can perceive his enemies pretty well even though his eyes are closed.

It can be a bit hard to tell but the demon slayers dont actually have powers. Water, thunder etc are just visualization based around the nature of the breathing I guess. They dont actually summon water or lightning. The "lightning" Tanjiro smelled was peobably from when Zenitsu was fighting against Spider boy.
