Part of what makes Zuko such a great character is that his development from villain to anti-hero and beyond feels natural for him. It isn't easy for him by any means, but each step flows organically from the previous one. It makes sense that it would have a flow like that given the themes and philosophy of the show.

To be fair, I can see where the Earth King's head was when Aang and the gaang were trying to convince him on the hundred year war. Imagine if you're living peacefully in a walled off city in Europe where you get no news on the outside world... and someone tries to tell you that there were two World Wars and someone had landed on the moon. You'd think they were crazy.
