Subaru is stubborn and prideful. Of course, he didn't understand this world's customs that much, but instead of apologizing for so brazenly declaring himself a knight, he dug his heels in. Then, after publicly humiliating not only himself but also Emilia, he wants to get back at Julius instead of just admitting that he was wrong. It's very sad too, because half the things he remembers, like how Emilia saved him and treated him kindly, are from timelines that got reset. So it makes it way harder for her to understand him. All of that mixed in a pot is what led to this situation, and in my eyes, it's what makes Subaru an interesting character. He's just your average teenager plucked into another world, with both good and bad traits. But because he's just some dude, he's afraid of dying; afraid of using his power. If he goes back to fix the mistakes resulting from his character flaws, it means that he's acknowledging that a mistake was made in the first place, which Subaru has refused to admit this entire episode. Also, I feel like not ever addressing the root of the problem would lead to more mistakes in the future, too. That's how I see it at least. But there are a lot of ways to look at this, and the way you both interpret it is, as usual, accurate. Glad you looked at it in an understanding way as well, because I've seen too many comments of people hating on this part of the story, even re:watchers (sorry for the pun) going out of their way on the director's cut to say they'd be skipping this garbage arc and whatnot. Looking forward to what you guys think of the next few episodes. Things start to get REALLY interesting.
