Shadows are not just shadows from the light source, but there are many other effects.

There are two main types of shadow effects.

I think there are two main types of shadow effects.

- Shadows to express the three-dimensional feeling of an object.

- Shadows for expressing a dramatic aim.

I will explain the specific examples in turn.

Shadows for expressing three-dimensionality

Shadows for expressing three-dimensionality refer to the shadows of characters and objects.

An object with a shadow will look more 3D than an object without a shadow. We can apply this to characters as well.

I tried to add shadows by considering the direction of the light from the source.

Shadows to express a dramatic effect

There are three types of shadows that can be used to express dramatic intent.

- Shadows that express emotion.

- Shadows to express situation.

- Shadows to express distance.

[ Shadows that express emotion ]

The character's discomfort (emotional state) is expressed with shadows. Considering the shadow from the light source, there is no shadow around the eyes, but as an expression, a shadow is added around the eyes.

Left: No shadow.

Right: with shadow.

[ Shadows to express situation ]

Since the character is in the shade of a tree, the shadow of the tree is cast on the character. By adding the necessary shadows according to the surrounding situation, you can express where the character is and what is around him.

By adding the shadows of the trees, you can show that the trees match the surroundings and that the characters are under the trees.

[ Shadows to express distance ]

By adding a shadow to the character in the foreground, the distance between the foreground and background is expressed.

I think the shadows on the characters in the foreground make it easier to draw the eye to the characters in the background. This technique can be applied in other ways as well.

For example, in a walking pose, you can add shadows to express depth. It is now easier to see which foot is in front of the other.
