Not sure if this scene is gonna stay two chapters or get linked together in the end, like I had intended when I started writing it. We'll find out.

For now, here's "finished" Chapter 41 for you guys!

*********

A few rules & reminders:

  • Chapters will be dropping as Bryce completes them. That means anywhere from every 1 to 2 weeks on average, though sometimes waits may be longer.
  • Recall that these are rough chapters, with no editing other than a single pass-through as Bryce writes.
  • On a similar note, we are not asking for advice or corrections at this time. If Bryce wants feedback, we will certainly reach out, thank you! If you want to voice concerns or complaints about the chapter, you may now do so over on the Reddit discussion thread! Notifications are turned off on those conversations, so they're a free-for-all now (within the rules of the subreddit, obviously)!

That's it, so without further ado... Enjoy!

I've wondered about this as well. Unfortunately, I don't see that he has shown enough yet to qualify to skip up to the next level. Besides, even if his CAD rank increases, he has still only been fighting with it for 6 months; he wouldn't do well against people who have practiced for 2-3 years. He couldn't even get a hit on Lasher, even though that was before Type Shift.

Where we stand, we have a LOT of the smaller arcs having no progress. The major arc for this book so far has seemed to only be the sectionals, but there hasn't been enough challenge for it to make a proper arc, and it's about to end. It just isn't enough for the plot to hang on. I honestly think Bryce needs to first go back and add some more progress to some of the smaller arcs throughout the current book. Also, make it clearer what the major arc is supposed to be. It clearly can't JUST be the sectionals. And, he needs to either really put focus on writing Stormweaver, and make it the main priority. Or he needs to have the due date pushed back. I just don't see a polished book that feels like a complete work, at this point. I think this chapter is a good example of how this entire book may turn out at this point. It should have easily covered all of shido's improvements with interactions and reactions of characters at the end. It felt like half a chapter. Wasn't all that satisfying. And if things keep up like this, it is really going to feel like we only get half a book by the time he 'finishes.' All that being said, Bryce is a great writer. That's why we love Stormweaver. But it kind of feels crappy that he's failed to make work on this book a main priority, despite assurances that he would. On Patreon there's constant posts about how other projects have gotten in the way of completing this work. Make Stormweaver the prioriry, please.

In the post it pretty clearly reads that the chapter may be combined with the next one. He’s also the CEO of the company. That doesn’t allow him to “just write” as he has duties to his staff and the direction of the company. While I agree that the book only feels about 1/2 way written especially as it only takes place over the course of maybe three weeks time versus ~ six months of book one. There very well may be a lot left in the tank to fill it out. Oh, and the biggest thing this post would be better placed in the Reddit that is dedicated to “open discussion”.

I hoping sectionals will be the first half of the book. I certainly will be pretty disappointed if there isn't any good progression with his grandfather/family.

Temporal shift...had been thinking it was a movement thing. But now wondering if its a cognition thing. Something to allow Rei to instantly parse all this data Shido is presenting for threat assessments?

JD Hopkins

I'd TYPICALLY agree with you, Kory Leach. Except the fact that Bryce has made many promises he hasn't kept and I doubt he'll keep in the future. No one made him make those promises. Based on pure production, he simply shouldn't have made them at all. But he did. So he needs to get it on track. He's a CEO? So delegate.

Spoken like someone who has never managed a company, nor tried to be creative on a schedule. Bryce was masterful enough to ensnare us. Life happens, especially during Covid. He's kept us as best he can (a lot, a LOT better than many of us, myself for sure) up to date and informed, and still gotten amazing, absolutely amazing pieces of story out. Why can't you trust that Bryce actually has a plan for the storylines? And that we just aren't ready to see it yet? Bryce has flat out said things like this will make him NOT post anything. So take your belligerence to Reddit, or leave him alone and don't screw it up for the rest of us. Or go write your own story. I'll happily pay five dollars a month to ask you weekly where updates are.

I really liked this chapter personally I like not getting a description of all the new goodies at once. Keeps me on edge for the next chapter. Cant wait to see where the story goes from here and how is interactions are with the rest of his class now! Not to mention what arias brother is going to say about that contract and how rei will respond.

Heather Herren

I love this chapter!! There are soo many possibilities to explore!! I love the fact the group is all bonding!!

Dude. This isn’t a serial. This isn’t a TV show. You’re not going to get the end product here. So you need to put YOUR expectations in check and enjoy what you get. Not sure how that’s so difficult to understand.

Loved the chapter! Weirdy I’m wondering what his grandfather is going to do next, when/if Rei meets his sister Sarah and what rank she’ll be.

Dougie Mitchell

The other thing I liked about this and the last chapter is that its really going to drive the inclusion of Cashe and Grant into the S club. They must be sitting watching his call thinking wtf and that secret reveal is one of the bits i'm most looking forward to in future chapters

Just a question is it possible That we may see some drawings of the Evolutions of theor armors like from beginning to end.

wraithmarked

for sure! it's something i'm definitely intrested in having done eventually for everyone!

Random question but was raiden from metalgear rising: revegence any inspiration at all for rei? I always find myself comparing the two. Especially now since he has a visor/face part of his armor. I kind of see it as his saber mode now.

Samantha Sandlin

Depending on if Sarah is closer to her grandfather or her parents, I could see grandfather using Sarah as the "softer in" he needs to get to know Rei.

Voror

Curious what sort of changes we may see in the armor going forward as he continues along his path. From the past it seemed like the armor refined itself more so I suppose that may be the path it goes down in addition to other possible features like externals.

TimeDrawsNigh

Wonder if his injuries will force him to sign the sponsorship contract for the medical benefits, assuming the ISCM can’t get him back to full strength.

saynt

no he will be fully healed in 2 weeks + why wouldnt the iscm get him back up to full strength? they take care of how many users? also dent.

JRØ

Chapter 40 it says "Temporal Step" But i liked the idea of Temporal Shift xD

TimeDrawsNigh

I’m not saying they won’t, just that they’re unable in some small but highly important way

Holy Crap!!! So…I was doing my latest re-reread (yes - more than 3) and in the intro of book 2 is this tasty little nugget…

While first-year CAD recipients participate in their own bracket at Sectionals and are limited to competing at that level—with some exceedingly rare exceptions— Bryce, was this a sneaky foreshadow? Hmmmm? 😜
