Once again I am juking you out, but not without good reason.

Wraithmarked launched not one but two Kickstarters this week (here for Mother of Learning and here for any 3D printing fans) so between that and Ben getting COVID I literally have not been able to sit down and do rewrites until today.

For that reason, until I finish this Chapter 41 (which I promised this weekend) I will be posting every new word, even if it has to drop Sunday!

On the plus side, there's going to be something fun for each section of this chapter, I think, so I don't foresee anyone getting bored 😅 🤞

Enjoy!

*********

A few rules & reminders:

  • Chapters will be dropping as Bryce completes them. That means anywhere from every 1 to 2 weeks on average, though sometimes waits may be longer.
  • Recall that these are rough chapters, with no editing other than a single pass-through as Bryce writes.
  • On a similar note, we are not asking for advice or corrections at this time. If Bryce wants feedback, we will certainly reach out, thank you! If you want to voice concerns or complaints about the chapter, you may now do so over on the Reddit discussion thread! Notifications are turned off on those conversations, so they're a free-for-all now (within the rules of the subreddit, obviously)!

That's it, so without further ado... Enjoy!

Whoop whoop 🙌 keep it coming. That’s no cliffhanger people, a cliffhanger would be, if that was the last sentence in the book….

Clay Rasmussen

One of these days, Bryce, I'm going to find the cliff you keep hanging us off and literally punt you off it. See how it feels then huh?!!

Lawrence Dillon

I guess im going to work on my novel to make myself feel better

Clay Rasmussen

Its like talking to someone who only says the first half of every sentence but whatever they're saying is the most interesting thing you've ever heard. Formulate a complete thought please dear lord 😫

Tyler Thornton

First off hell yea thats an incredible evolution. I cant be the only one to be thinking that is gonna be anninsane change for aria tho. I’m looking forward to seeing how she needs to relearn how she makes use of her device from a bigger shield leading to tiring quicker to even with the crossguard and bigger blade the weight of it will be completely different.

Scott

What? No new user ability to go with the massive evolution????? :)

I really want to get more info on how Shido might be communicating with the other CADs and optimizing their advancements. There must be something truly impressive in store for Viv.

Flusspferd

Yeah, I totally agree. While it seems like an awesome upgrade in the long run, a regular person would be really screwed over if their entire equipment got an overhaul hours before a fight (and they still have the teambattles to fight). I will be interested to see how she manages.

Anonymous

They already have squad coms from the cads right? Or is that an arena thing? Maybe shido awakens the devices it's been in proximity to for better connectivity once it's "conscious" like kestrel. Could share (at some sort of percentage) different abilities like overclock etc. 10% stronger for a longer duration with less crash. This is making a lot of assumptions as the mechanics of the archons haven't been fleshed out only that they're connected and that they adapt but a sort of mirroring would make sense in the whole "greater than the sum of its parts" kind of way. Their gestalt consciousness not being able to keep up with united individuals linked together while benefiting from some of the enemies capabilities

I'm very frustrated with not receiving a new chapter every one or two weeks. Bryce you need to work on your schedule. I have no issues with once every three weeks, it's just the teasing posts every Friday about how you ALWAYS have something happen. Dang it man, plan your time better, we pay you for this!

JD Hopkins

I have to agree. It would be different if people weren't literally paying to read ahead. 3 weeks is a long time to have a dry spell. And in this case, it stops right where he has to describe Shido. Makes me think it is writers block. Just say that.

Joshua Ward

I'd be much happier knowing that he had planned out his time perfectly and was just stuck with the writing. It would feel more like a reason rather than an excuse.

Flusspferd

I am with you on this one Joshua. I follow other authors that only post every three weeks or even once a month (it usually isn‘t their main job, but anyway) and I have no issues with that whatsoever. I think we also all understand that rushing a creative process is a moronic idea, so if you need more time it‘s all good and I am happy to wait. But announcements like „sorry, I had to plan the wraithmarked stuff for the year“ just seem kinda dumb, like yeah, it is the first week of the year, but you knew that when you announced the chapter the week before… That being said, the story is yours and you are obviously free to choose your priorities as you see fit, as we are fit to unsubscribe if we get to fed up with your schedule. I guess what most people that are complaining would really like to understand is why your priorities are the way they are. By my educated guess (based on the kind of activity any Stormweaver related posts create on this patroon compared to other advanced chapters) the vast majority of people are here for Stormweaver and it feels like you only work on it when there is nothing else you could possibly do. This is most likely not the case but that is just the impression I get (I am partially saddened by the fact that while the kickstarters are nice goodies, I am really here for the book and you usually only ship to the US so I can‘t get the stuff even if I want(ed) to). Anyways, I enjoy the story and for me personally the quality of what you do put out makes up for the fact that I dislike most other things about how you choose to run you patreon.

JD Hopkins

Does anyone know what him posting every new word means? Because if he doesn't finish chapter 41, that's not really a silver lining.

Sugoi

Maybe a few extra hundred words today and tomorrow? It’s still not a “complete” chapter at least by Bryce’s words.

Jason Bradford

Man, you guys gotta relax! I love these Chapters too, but the man has all kinds of shit going on and he’s inviting us into his process for a damned pittance when it’s all said and done. He’s upfront about how much he has going on and he communicates CONSTANTLY letting us know where he’s at. I love the work, and you can’t rush art and live a normal life. Enjoy the fact that you get to have an in with one of your favorite authors and if it doesn’t work for you, unsubscribe.

Tyler Thornton

While most of us are here for iron prince related content, that doesn’t change the fact that this patreon is not just for that series. Not only that but the work done by Bryce allows many authors and illustrators now too the chance to be seen something that is extremely hard in a time where algorithms control every recommended page and those algorithms can be skewed heavily away from new content. Plus all of the little gifts, events, communication, and other work done makes this more of a community than just take my money and give me words. I understand the frustration of wanting new words each week, but saying the communication of “man I’m super behind on all of this incredible stuff i want to do for my fans and helping out other authors” is annoying and should be planned better is a bit rude. Tldr life happens, id rather get communication than a see you next week, read the other stuff on here too it can surprise you and is good work

wraithmarked

Guys. I run two companies and have a responsibility to guarantee the livelihoods of 5 full-time employees and almost a dozen part-time employees. That means things come up, very often, and frequently last minute. You may know other authors who post more often, or post the same but on a strict schedule. That will not happen here, and has never happened here. Thinking it's possible for someone to retain a rigid and strict schedule while running a (quickly) growing startup AND trying to get a well-written book out is completely unrealistic. It's a big part of the reason I offer chapters as Public Release as well, so that people who don't want to pay don't have to read the story. I will continue to communicate with the Patreon and other readers, and I will continue to produce in the same way I do now since it's the only way I can get everything done I need to do and still enjoy my work. If that is unsatisfying to you, that's okay. Again, that's what the Public Release chapters are for. But do not try to guilt me into following your expectations of what the schedule of a typical writer can be when my schedule cannot be typical. Thanks, -Bryce EDIT: hit enter too early. finishing comment.

Joshua Ward

You're just ass kissing. We pay for a service, we ALL pay for it. Asking for better planning is important as, being repeatedly told with less than 24 hours notice, that what you're expecting isn't going to happen yet again, is very frustrating. Better planning doesn't mean we have to receive chapters every week or two. It let's us set proper expectations when to actually expect the chapters to be available.

Keenan Mallard

right? just gotta have multiple patreons to follow and read, keep yourself busy until the next one comes out lol.

Anonymous

Look at the terms of the service that you are paying for. They state that "Early access to weekly chapter updates! (Stormweaver specifically drops every 1 to 2 weeks on average, with occasional longer delays.)" Bryce has in no way deviated from what he has promised to deliver. People have lives, and things happen. Deal with it. Ps. I also hit enter early.

Joshua Ward

Look at what you guys are even arguing. I'm not demanding anything. I'm literally suggesting that the person we all pay for service, plan out his work time more appropriately because of the last minute excuses we continually get. Could even one of you tell me that if we had more consistent or reliable information, that it would not make your experience better? Are you all so afraid to provide a legitimate criticism because you're worried you'll break Bryce? He's a fantastic author and a grown up. He can handle it.

Joshua Ward

My point that everyone is apparently missing is this. You "should" know quite some time before Thursday or Friday that you will be unable to provide a Friday chapter or at the very least unlikely to provide that chapter. Why would you then procrastinate until the last minute to tell us that? I realize that the hope is to get everything in, but if you haven't figured out by now that providing accurate information as soon as you're able is an important aspect, you are going to alienate a lot of people. I cannot be the first person to point this out to you. I'm just trying to see if you're willing to see the issue.

wraithmarked

You're not hearing me, Joshua. "You "should" know quite some time before Thursday or Friday that you will be unable to provide a Friday chapter or at the very least unlikely to provide that chapter. " No. I don't. Because I work down to the wire to get these out to you guys. I'm not writing ahead. I am putting these out as I finish them. I don't have the time to write ahead. So I plan to get you guys a chapter every week when I can, but that frequently does not go to plan because something else has taken my attention. You are not going to get a consistent schedule from me. It's not going to happen. Nor am I going to preemptively announce every Monday that I *might* not make the chapter even though I think I can. You are trying to apply restrictions to my schedule that may work very well for a vast majority of creators, but do not work well for me, and I would appreciate it if you would recognized that I know myself and my own schedule and abilities better than you do, that I am at least intelligent enough to have long since come to the conclusion that what you're suggesting will not work, and that I am hard-working enough that that is not due to laziness or "procrastination" (which I'm particularly irked by right now after have worked 10 12+hr days in a row in order to get Mother of Learning 2 ready) that is limiting my ability to meet your expectations. You need to recognize that my life and my schedule does not allow for me to do what is that you want me to do, Joshua, and from there decide either that that's okay with you after all, or it's not worth the cost to your wallet and you'd rather go back to the free Public Release chapters. I will understand either way. -Bryce EDIT: spelling

I feel like it's a silent competition prodding between the CADs... Subliminal to the users. I bet Shido is self aware and just can't be brothered to actually talk to Rei. I also bet that his awareness is pinging off the gang hard pushing them to self awareness faster and quicker more involved evos too!

Decorus

My only concern is he won’t meet his contract deadline. He is running out of time to finish.

Michael R Foust

I have to agree with JD Hopkins, to be over 500 pages intro the story, very little of consequence, except meeting the grandfather, has happened to move the story along.

Amanda

I love this. Can’t wait to see if we ever get a chapter from Shido’s perspective!
