Steve and I were walking the streets in Kyoto, exploring the neighborhood when we found a secluded tea house down a side street. We chatted with two polite young ladies wearing traditional kimono and they gave us two paper cranes as a thank you for taking their picture.

We then met the owner and his wife and talked to them about sites to see in Kyoto, their friend who makes silk kimono, and surfing culture in California.

Before we left, the shop owners wife met us at the door with a medium sized bag. She had told us it was her pleasure to send us off with a few gifts. To my shock, she had given me one of her antique kimonos. She said the light blue would suit me well. The owner then gave us maps of the area as well as a ceramic teapot which is in the wrapped box next to the kimono. He said it is white and it was appropriate because is pure like our spirits.

I cried I was so touched by their kindness and we promised we’d come back before we left for Tokyo.

Before leaving, I suggested they watch the documentary ‘Riding Giants’ (about surfing) because they seemed interested in the culture. I wish I had more to give. Maybe I’ll bring something on my next visit.

It was truly a magical day. It has been a long time since I’ve been so enchanted. I can’t wait to see what tomorrow brings.
