Here's a little look at an ill-fated football game by Retro Studios. In the years before Metroid Prime, they experimented with a number of other projects, including a vehicular combat game. This was another.
Their ideas behind the game hinged upon delivering a level of realism previously unseen in the genre. The prototype featured evolving weather during games, which the player could tweak to their liking before hand. It also used motion capture tech for all player animations; such a thing is commonplace now, but back in 2000, it was breaking new ground, and well ahead of its time!
Retro was hoping to have the game officially licensed by NFL, too, as you can see from the UI image. Ultimately, NCL didn't want to move forward with it, and all of their side projects eventually went under after Prime hit its stride. The rest, as they say, is history.
