I've really enjoyed watching all your season 1 reactions and am looking forward to your reaction to the dvd extras next week and of course the start of season 2!

Lily Winter

I've always loved this finale(this + last episode). The pacing is just wonderful specifically in this episode imo. It's accomplishing so much in the same 40 minutes but it doesn't feel rushed whatsoever. The tight timeline also really helps with the sense of urgency in this. Dean/Jensen is just amazing in this. He's really intense and on edge the entire time and you can just FEEL it. It's crazy how composed he seems while you can simultaneously read his emotions and thoughts like an open book. It's Jensen's best performance this season by a long shot imho. I really love how they introduced this Bobby character. Even though we've never seen or heard of him all the actors have this believable chemistry and it truly feels like Sam and Dean have known this dude to some extent. I don't know if I have ever pointed this out before but I love how Sam and John are being paralleled this season. The obvious one is of course their story: Their spouse dies, they leave a normal life behind and set out on a quest for revenge with no regard for their own life. The more subtle parallel is maybe in their personality: Sam mirrors a lot of John's behavior (a really good episode for that is "Home" where he uses the exact words John said to Dean: "Take your brother outside as fast as you can...") and Dean even points out how similar they are in this episode. On the surface it might seem like Dean takes after his father while Sam is the polar opposite but it's actually the other way around. It's a genius move and it makes total sense for all of the characters. Dean has severe self-worth issues and borderline worships his father but still feels like John cared more about Sam than he ever did him(The talk with the yellow-eyed demon. amazing scene btw). So Dean is just desperately trying to imitate his father to appease him and make him proud, plus just guard himself from disappointment. But it never really works out totally, sure a stranger may think he's like John(like he wants) but we as the audience can see that Dean at his core is very different. Sam on the other hand has a strained relationship with his Dad and resented him for a long time, so he really tried to become someone totally different than his father but that also doesn't work out all the time. We can see how he operates a lot like John and even tho he wants to be nothing like him(he's not in a lot of ways, I'm not saying their super similar characters or anything) his mindset reminds me of John's a lot over the course of the season. It also makes sense for Sam and John to be the ones fighting so much, because you usually get into arguments with people similar to you. Anyways I love everything about this final episode, it's just really good TV and definitely a fitting end to this season even if it leaves as many unanswered questions as it does. On a quick note I've always loved how Dean notices it couldn't be his father talking to him because even if John would have maybe been proud of Dean(BIG IF), the Dad Dean knows would never acknowledge him in that way. It's kinda tragic but very fitting.
