I told my $5 Patrons that I was planning to share a couple pieces of art with the public just for an excuse to show it off a bit.  Most of it is being reserved for Patrons though.

As some of you may already know, I just brought three artists on board to help out with Inheritance.  I asked each of them to look at the original cover art, then give some sample art based on how they see it.  Now that I've got a bit of art, we're discussing what art style(s) will work best moving forward.

The original title piece for context:

Sample art from one of our artists:

I particularly like the simple and clean presentation from this artist.

And a piece from one of the other artists:

This artists work is a bit grittier, but I absolutely love the way they handled the faces, especially the eyes.

Would love to know what you all think!  Share your thoughts, impressions, and opinions!

Both are quite nice but I'm a sucker for anime style so I prefer the first. Since it's your game I'd recommend you choose the style yourself so that you are happy with it. However if you really do want to leave it up to the community I suggest you do a poll.

With three artists, I'm giving them each a vote in what they think would work best. Majority rules. I figure that whatever makes them happy, makes all of us happy. For what its worth, I'm partial to the anime style as well. ;)

It heavily depends on the vibe you want to give off. The art style should reflect the nature of the game. While I like the anime style for lighter games, the more serious ones should take on a more mature art style. Just my two cents as they are.

The game is actually intended to cover a wide range of play style and themes eventually. For the art, we're having a good talk about what we want to do and the feel it will create. First order of business after finalizing an art style will be to redo the title image. I'll be sure to share it when its ready to give everyone an idea of what the game will eventually look like. ;)

Second one, it may seem more rough but this are just test so it can feel more clean too, since im guessing they will be something like portraits for the game (or smiliar) more excprecive faces and eyes help convey more the scene add to what we read.

Personally, I'm a fan of the anime art style for body, but love the expressive nature of the faces from the second artist. We're actually discussing the possibility of blending some of the art styles a little (Like letting one artist specialize in background art, or one specializing in clothing, faces, etc) As you have seen with my other projects, I tend to be fairly text heavy. I'm a firm believer that any text based game should be able to stand on its own without art, but that art will make a good story great. Current plan is to include a single image on each page that includes text. (Though there are likely to be some exceptions.)

Personally I like the first one a bit better but I'm a semi-weaboo so I am a bit bias, I do like the second one's expressions and the feeling it gives off makes it feel a bit more unique so maybe the second would work better for a project like this. Would there be a way of having certain images have two options depending on what the player would rather see, sort of like how Trials in Tainted Space does it? Or a different image for certain scenes that can help convey the feeling the writing is trying to convey (say the more grittier pictures for when the story is darker themed and the more anime/moe type pics for when the story is being lighthearted?)

We're actually discussing the possibility of taking elements from both art styles. That said, one thing I am adamant about is that we work out an art style and try to maintain consistency through the entire game. Its also possible that since we want to put together a paper doll style system for art that we might eventually be able to accommodate more than one art style eventually when it comes to facial elements..

Buckey

ehh i'd go with the second there's plenty of animu content out there this makes it a bit more unique

Fan of anime style here myself

It seems like a lot of people like the anime style, and I've been talking with a couple of our artists off and on this morning, and it sounds like we're leaning towards doing the art anime style, but blend in a bit of the "realism" from the other style for the additional expressiveness it offers. Think two parts the first style, to one part the second. A couple of them are working on some sample work of the blend right now to see how it looks overall.

Missed this comment somehow, . . . sorry. Talking with the artists, it sounds like we're going to try blending the two art styles, with a leaning towards anime style. The idea is to capture the overall appearance and feel of the anime style, while offering the additional expressiveness the second style would provide. A couple of the artists are working on some sample sketches for the blended art styles that I hope to showcase in the coming days.
