just a heads-up because we're starting to get into the story: you're going to be getting the building blocks of the main power system in this arc, and it isn't a thing they repeatedly explain like most shows--but rather build up as time passes. If you need to get notes out or re-watch some scenes in your own time I'd recommend doing so cos things get a little confusing. It's kind of similar to jjk's. Things started to get real loopy for me at first watch of HxH because I couldn't grasp the differences between the power scaling of characters lol.

Gon and Killua are such an amazing complex duo, they remind me of the Vinland Saga, "A stag and a wolf" dynamic, but maybe more like, "A psychopathic golden retriever and a wolf"

I can't express how much I enjoy Alex's refusal to participate in people's games. Canary's name (as in a canary in a coalmine, as an early warning signal of danger in the location) is fairly straightforward, I think. Gotoh, on the other hand, isn't super clear, but it's quite likely that it comes from the actual Japanese surname Goto (後藤). This is a little nerdy and complicated, even for me, so please bear with me. The Fujiwara clan (藤原 is fuji+wara, or in English wisteria+meadow) were a clan of nobles who married into the Emperor's family--in fact, they were so influential that they even literally made it a law that various members of the Imperial family *could only* marry either other members of the Imperial family or the Fujiwara clan. From about 1000-1150CE, they basically ran the government with the Emperor as puppet, and they gave out surnames to various servants with their "fuji" character in them to show and spread their influence. Kato 加藤 supplier+fuji, Endo 遠藤 scout+fuji, Ito 伊藤 ise-region-official+fuji, or the present-day most common name in Japan, Sato 佐藤 lieutenant+fuji, and so on. Goto 後藤 is guard+fuji, so basically, the bodyguard or caretakers of the self-declared most important clan in Heian Period Japan.

You really hit the nail with your intuition about the depth of character or killua and particularilly Gon who is a bit naïve but also not the typical "Good" character, Gon will always try make the right choice for him and the people around him but as long as it doesn't hurt them and he has something to gain he can always choose the darker path.

can't wait to go on the hxh journey with you

ODIS

this stuff gets repeated over and over in the series to make everything clear, there's no need to mention this beforehand

Lovro

It’s a real treat watching both jjk and hxh with you. I like both of these a lot and i’ve been looking forward to the day you start reacting to hxh. As it’s a series that touches on many things i knew you will have a lot to say about it. It’s both interesting to hear your thoughts and funny to see some reactions like how you reacted to the conversation with Killua and his dad 😂 That scene alone might’ve given you the expression of disbelief and scepticism more times than all the other ones in this series so far combined. I might be exaggerating but it was hilarious. Your thoughts on Gon and Killua’s relationship and where it might go and also some assumptions or predictions you make about the future or the motive for certain things that characters do or might’ve done is always interesting to hear as well. By the way, the way the story divides the arcs up to the point that you have currently watched is ep 1-21: Hunter Exam, 22-26: Zoldyck Family. The Zoldyck Family arc is actually possibly the least favourite arc in the entire series for the fans, though even this was enjoyable and actually far from meaningless in my opinion. Says something about the arcs to come. One last thing. I don’t know if you’ve been told but the next episode is another recap episode, same as episode 13. These are the only two in the entire series.

Sam B

Yeah I think it does a good job of reinforcing the important parts. Later on powers get wild for sure, but the author loves the logical breakdown of his power systems.

Chris Sharpe

It’s simultaneously heartwarming and heartbreaking that the people that gave the closest thing to love to Killua prior to the Hunter Exam were the butlers and not even his own family. Either way I can’t wait to see how you enjoy the series from here on out. If you like Gon and Killua and their dynamic now, you will absolutely adore what comes later. Still only scratching the surface.

Mima

hahaha always coming in clutch honestly

kingkoopa98

Everything before this point has been great but starting with this next arc the series just reaches another level.

Mike Donohue

Now that Gon and Killua are able to go off into the world together, the show really soars and their friendship... like you said, more critical than words can describe, continues to ground us and the story.

agoodwintv

Interesting! How do you know all this? This one seems like a particularly deep cut

agoodwintv

Thanks! I started watching the next episode but ended up combining it with episode 27. Does this mean Gon doesn't write anymore letters?

Ray

I love how you describe Gon and Killua's characters as complex because they truly are. You can easily make the mistake of watching this anime and only getting the surface level idea of their characters. Gon - kindhearted boy who always tries to do what he feels is right no matter what. Killua - Assassin trained kid who's just a badass. But when you start looking deeper into these characters you realize there's so much more. Unfortunately, when I first watched HxH I didn't understand how deep anime could be. And even though I didn't understand that, it still was, and is to this day, my favorite anime of all time. Now having re-watched it countless times, I've truly seen how strong the writing and the characters are and it's just.. such an amazing experience. I never get bored of re-watching this show and I never get bored of seeing people's reactions to it. It's always a pleasure.

Ryan

I'm relieved you weren't too bored by it, haha! The stuff about the Fujiwara clan and their names is actually something we just had to learn as part of coursework. Even now, when I have to teach people how to read Japanese names, half the time it just becomes a history lesson because of the way kanji "works" (being very generous there). But really, random trivia about Japanese family names is a common shtick on Japanese quiz shows and things. Togashi would definitely have studied the Heian Period and the Fujiwara in school at some point in Japan. That's required content in public school social studies. I don't know if Gotoh's name is based on that name Gotoh, but it would make sense, given what the name means and how he acts, and it's trivia-famous enough where I think the average Japanese young adult reader would suspect it and probably think of that trope.

Ray

To give an example.. When I first watched the scene were Gotoh and Gon have a brief conversation before they all leave, it completely went over my head what exactly was being expressed there because, like.. I didn't realize there were deeper things to look for in anime. (I don't wanna say I just thought they were cartoons but.. heh, well.. yunno. Mind you, I watched Elfen Lied waay before this, if any of you know that anime, so idk how I thought so lowly of the ability for anime to have depth.) Now when I watch that scene and I read Gotoh's last parting words, it always hits me in the feels. "Please be careful. I am entrusting Killua-sama to you." Protecting Killua is more than just a job for him. He protects him because he cares about his well-being. And like Gotoh mentioned to Gon on the phone, there are many people who have grudges against the Zoldyck family. Killua is protected while he's behind their walls but once he's out he's fair game. It's just awesome to see Gotoh do the right thing and respect Killua's wishes after seeing the way Killua lit up while talking to Gon. Not to mention he essentially went against the mother's orders. Also, I'm almost 100% sure Gotoh wouldn't have the same response and do all this if someone were trying to take Illumi or Milluki.

Oak

Yeah, the Zoldyck Family Arc is sometimes labeled as a separate arc, but it's more like a capstone to the Hunter Exam Arc. Also, as Mima mentioned we do start to get into the power system soon. While it can be very complicated, I feel it is also the most well designed power system I've ever seen. Imagine if JJK explained the ins and outs of exactly how and why people have their powers, while also explaining how they work. While initial exposition can be heavy, if you do understand it, it makes it very easy to understand any future powers you may see. Even though you've already made the Killua/Gojo comparison, I imagine you'll start to see why JJK gets compared to this show so much.

Lovro

I’m guessing due to even the worst episodes of hxh being rated 7 or more, while the recap episodes were the only two in the series to receive a 4, they decided to make Gon write his letters offscreen. Fans are usually not really fans of recap episodes lol. But don’t worry, he made a promise to go back to whale island once he becomes a hunter though that’s currently on hold until he punches Hisoka and becomes worthy of calling himself a hunter in his mind. Next arc’s gonna be pretty awesome.

Andre Tan

I know u called Gotoh a jerk before cos of the way he spoke to Gon and friends over the phone but tbh he really isn’t one. Like u really get the sense this episode that the butlers do care for Killua and wishes the best for him and they do believe that gon is a good influence on him even though they aren’t supposed to have emotional connections to the family. And to be fair I know u don’t like ppl who kinda are all abt their jobs and that’s it without the ability to make exceptions, I rmb u saying smtg similar in ATLA but these guys work for a high profile family of assassins so I figure if they didn’t take their job seriously, there would be serious consequences. Like think abt how powerful killua has been shown to be but then his older brother was shown to have power over him, now u add the dad and grandpa to the mix and u realise that this family is a big deal

Rayn

I think the last arc is my least favorite. Feels very underwhelming and honestly not very significant following the arc before it.
