I’m glad you chose to look at Gon and Killua in a realistic sense. Many people starting the show may dismiss things like what you say as “cool anime kid who has a dark side” or “simple anime protagonist takes things at face value” (like I did tbh). An amazing thing about HxH that I’ve found is that you don’t need to suspend your disbelief as much as you’d expect and there is more to read into in the interactions and more logic at play than you may think.

Obviously I need to see it to believe it but it makes sense. Levi’s design was based on a certain future character, so it’s not out of the ordinary for mangaka to borrow design aspects in that way. Even Togashi himself does that quite a bit.

I don't think of the "Exam Arc" as a single arc so much as a bunch of mini arcs. Some of them are more engaging and thought-provoking than others.

one thing i will say is that gon has a pretty interesting set of morals that very much gets explored throughout the show
