I've been thinking about last week's episode a bit between then and now, and I'm still having some trouble pinpointing the philosophy that's being explored. There was a call back to Mahito's idea that the body comes after the soul, but the parasite in Geto's body countered that by saying the memories of the body entered his brain every time he swapped hosts. The idea being that body and soul are one and the same. That's also amplified when we saw Geto's body move on it's own when goaded by Gojo. Geto and Mahito had a bit of back and forth about it, but just ended up chalking it up to a difference in worldviews for their techniques, but that's really unsatisfying imo. Also, there's the discussion between Choso (blood guy), Mahito, and Jogo, about killing Juji vs reviving Sukuna. Mahito, being a curse dervied from humanity argues that curses are always following their whims and doing what they want, while Jogo a manifestion of humanity's fear of lava/volcanos/nautral disaster, is somewhat more principled, and cares more about the end goal of reviving curses, rather than himself being the one standing in the wastelands "a thousand years from now." I feel like there is a connection between these ideas, but I can't put my finger on it.

Also it's good to see Jump Kaisen back. I love when no one sits back, and everyone is involved in beating up the bad guys.

One last funny tidbit about Gojo and the author while we are still talking about him: The seemly bottomless hate the author has for Gojo is well known, with story elements mostly, but also with some of his personality. What’s funny is that basically anyone who works closely with Gege says that, of all the characters in JJK, Gege is by far the closest to Gojo in terms of personality.

Chris Sharpe

That just tickles me in a way I can’t really describe. It’s like when two characters in anime immediately don’t like each other despite being exactly the same much to the humor of the other characters and the audience. The only difference is that it is one sided.

Since you brought up the hxh comparison earlier, young Gojo is voiced by Killua's VA

There’s not particularly a direct connection to be made or message to get from those 2 ideas tbh. To your first bit about the ‘soul v body’ discussions: the point is that they’re both talking about what they believe from their own perspectives, about a philosophical/metaphysical question that doesn’t necessarily have a perfect straightforward answer. Technically even (fake) Geto’s ‘counters’ don’t really refute Mahito’s perspective, because to him, it’s perfectly reasonable to expect that the body would probably still contain some of the information from the soul that created it/came before it, or might even still have fragments of the soul trapped inside or something. So the idea is that Mahito’s technique of directly interacting with his/other’s souls, and (fake) Geto’s technique of body swapping and still receiving the body’s personal information after death, would inherently bias or color their individual views on the question at hand. Mahito could be right, (fake) Geto could be right, neither could be right, it could be a case by case basis for each person, etc. The point was to set up the same conundrum and questions in the audience’s heads to keep thinking and wondering about. Can’t really explain more without entering spoiler material.

Fun fact but actually disturbing fact, the old lady’s grandson isn’t actually her grandson, she kidnapped him when he was a baby and raised her as her own, and that she had multiple “grandsons.”

I'm a manga reader too, so I won't get more into the weeds either for anime onlys. It's been a long time since I've read the Shibuya arc, so I'm just trying to reformulate the ideas that I had when I read it. While it makes sense when said outloud, I just don't like the conclusion that they reached that it's a matter of perspective.

Mima

someone said imagine coming from ur 9-5 job to see yuji throwing ur 2023 ford f-150 at a curse and MISSING

Jake White

Totally fair. I think it actually makes a lot of sense and informs a lot about the JJK world itself when viewed in the ‘one’s cursed technique colors their worldview/perspective’ tbh. Gojo’s limitless technique influences or inspires his limitless potential and energy, including his frivolity. Fushiguro’s 10 shadows technique is dark and mysterious but versatile and structurally strong. Etc. etc. And *SPOILER WARNING, GOODWIN/ANIME ONLYs DO NOT READ BEYOND THIS POINT* The discussion is also set up for what’s about to happen with the grandson/Toji body vs soul reveal next episode

Mima

also idk but seeing baby gojo is so sad bc this boy has been put on a pedestal since the day he was BORN not to mention the bounty on his head for simply being alive. the fact he was isolated and alone for so long until he got to experience a bit of joy at jujutsu high meeting geto and shoko..... just from the brief scene where he's like 10 walking down the street you can imagine how lonely that must've been for him. without them he probably wouldnt have experienced what it was like to be gojo satoru and not just the kid with limitless and six eyes.

Dunno2000

With the seance technique, summoning Toji really is just Toji's body and the physical characteristics of it (and since all of his "powers" are physical, his abilities with it.) Just like earlier in the episode when the grandma imitated that guy's daughter

An ‘egg of Columbus’ or ‘Columbus’s egg’ is basically a shorthand phrase referring to an unorthodox or novel new idea, that in hindsight seems simple. Ino was saying, “being outside the veil to increase its effectiveness is such a simple idea, why didn’t I think of it sooner?” in much fewer words lol

Chris Sharpe

Definitely true. Although to be fair, despite this, he seemed to absolutely enjoy being spoiled and revered to an extent. I still find it impressive that, despite this, he didn’t let it get to his head and formed his own values independently (I think most of his ego is generated from within).

Mima

totally fair point. It’s interesting to me that we have barely anything to go off of in regards to the gojo clan so we can’t really know what it was like for sure. My other question has always been why at this point in time Gojo hadn’t been popping babies to continue his lineage but…. only thing i can come up with is that he just wants to spare his own kids from trauma lol

Jake White

Well he’s an anomaly even among the Gojo clan tbh. Even if he pumped out kids, the odds of any of them being anywhere near as strong or capable as he is, are very low. Cause the limitless technique is the Gojo clan’s innate blood-lineage ability, but because of the technique’s complex nature, it’s hard as hell to apply properly without massive cursed energy reserves or extreme sensory advantages. Gojo was simply blessed enough to have also been born with the Six Eyes, which while we don’t know every single thing they’re capable of or entail, we do know that they significantly boost his sensory and precision capabilities. Tl;dr Gojo is only HIM cause of both his innate technique *and* the Six Eyes, which is an extreme rarity to be born with, even among his clan.

agoodwintv

Reminds me of one of my favorite movies. But I can't mention the name in this context cause it's an immediate spoiler

agoodwintv

Yeah that's great. I guess writing yourself is painful

Jake White

It’s definitely not lol. The show runners (maybe even with Gege’s input idk) absolutely made that casting choice on purpose lol

Chris Sharpe

I know some people people have the misconception that Gojo is the only member of the Gojo clan, which isn’t true. Gege said that the Gojo clan is a proper clan and they “spoiled him rotten”. Also because of his Six Eyes, he automatically became the head. I don’t necessarily believe that his experience with the Gojo clan was traumatic, and while it’s clear his birth did make waves, I think it was more that his self-adopted position as “The Strongest” later in life is what contributed to this burden, something that I’m not sure even previous infinite/six eyes users have adopted as Jujutsu society is rather feudal and tribalistic. It may also be why he doesn’t pursue love (although Geto might have something to do with that if you know what I mean 😏😭).

Emman Reed

So cool! Great reaction :))))))

Yori

I just learned that you taught English in Korea once..I wish I could have a english teacher as you in Korea! lol anyways enjoyed your reaction as always. I loved your little insight bout Ino

agoodwintv

Thanks! Yes and although I am not an English teacher now, I still live in Korea :)

Yori

oh really? I didn't know that. I guess that's why you were pretty much the only reactor that talked about Itaewon incident during the early Shibuya episodes.
