Yea almost got it right with pie eating, someone should have used pork to make some pie

Chris Sharpe

I want Menchi to call me an idiot sandwi—wait, what?

I've been WAITING for Netero to show up lol

AryTheDog

the early arcs are very lighthearted and some say even childish but the show sprinkles in some brutal stuff in there like it's just nothing. In way that could represent Gon's naive personality and/or his indifference to everything cruel in the world. It's one of the things that's so fascinating about HxH

The guy who plummets to his death is gut wrenching but almost played for comedy. I kind of love it

Vali Sippola

Yeah, while I love the anime, they definitely tone it down a lot from the manga in this first arc. It’s way more brutal there even in this more “whimsical” part of the story. Luckily once we get to the other arcs in the series, the anime doesn’t censor anything, so it’s mostly just for this first arc.

It's one of the things I live about the show too. There's a lot of complex morality between characters.

Chris Sharpe

Also, the whole “dirty old man trope” TRUST ME it’s only a one time thing, you won’t have to worry about that.

Jason Serrano

Kind of a useless spoiler... but I do believe this is the one and only time the Chairman does something pervy so you don't have to worry about that Old Master Roshii perv trope.

Mike Donohue

Man I can tell this one is gonna be really special. This may be my least favorite episode in the whole show, yet it was a joy seeing your reaction to it. Can't wait for what's to come

10:45 "Animal genocide!" --> Actually, not so far off, haha. I have a feeling most of what I'm going to be commenting on this series is puns, haha, but the Round 2 examiners' names are puns: "Menchi" is the name for 'ground meat.' "Buhara" (the big guy) is from 'buta+hara' / buta-bara, which means "pork belly." "Ma-futatsu-yama" (mapputatsu-yama) --> "Split-right-down-the-middle-mountain"

BRUH that thumbnail 💀💀 Hisoka is a next level anime character. Apparently some people really hate him but for me he is one of the most interesting characters in the show.

Chris Sharpe

Yeah, definitely top 5 for me in the show and one of my favorite anime villains.

Winnie

This is a funny coincidence, I dissected a pig today in bio lol. Though these ones are much cuter looking when dead, I lowkey want a plush. Also very disappointed we didn’t get to see how Hisoka would dress up the pig.

This episode actually changed quite a bit from the manga. In essence it was the same, but the content itself varied. In the manga, the applicants were first required to make a dish for Buhara. This was just the pig part as you saw, except 70 of them passed since Buhara basically ate every single one. Then, Menchi made them make sushi, but literally no one knew what the hell sushi was except for Hanzo (the Saitama lookin dude). It's mentioned that Hanzo is from Japan, which means that Japan canonically exists in HxH. Hanzo ends up being the only one to come close to passing, but in the end Menchi still fails them all. Everything is the same until the mountain, except this time the eggs are normal sized and there is no updraft thing, they actually had to climb out. They also didn't show the applicants getting the eggs at all, it pretty much goes straight to the eggs in the pot after our main group jumps in. There are a few more changes like this throughout the Hunter Exam, but as I recall this phase changed the most. Most of the other changes are violence censorship stuff, like when Hisoka killed that group last episode, it was actually bloody.

Chris Sharpe

There was actually a hilarious scene in the 1999 anime about this. They actually were doing sushi in that version and Killua made this perfect fancy dish that seemed flawless, but Menchi rejected it and said it was gross. Hisoka immediately gets out of line, seemingly smug, and we see a scene with him sadly sitting on the edge of a river staring into the distance with his dish next to him, which is EXACTLY the same as Killua’s. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=qYlbExJYGvc (Start at 1:27, ignore the quality of the dub)

Winnie

Bless you, Chris. This is exactly what I wanted. It’s beautiful.

Chris Sharpe

Yeah, in regards to Hisoka and the violence, he also sliced off that man’s arms at the beginning rather than turning them into confetti.

Szandor Kane

Probably the episode that single-handedly inspired the entire manga of "Gourmet Hunter Toriko".
