Yasssss!! The conclusion of the half a season long battle. So many amazing moments in this episode. It's really cool to see how they chose to mirror the last moments of the first Aoba Josai game that ended with Aoba Josai blocking the quick because they weren't completely aware of it's limitations yet. For the Miya twins to get humbled in the same way by the creators themselves was such a beautiful ending. Also shoutout to the animation studio for making a final point on a BLOCK still seems insanely epic. Also can we talk about how Tsukki fully put his faith in Hinata to receive a ball? That was beautiful.

“We don’t need the memories” : what this is initially portrayed as through the amazing skill of Inarizaki and the Miya twins in particular, is that all that matters is the here and now and that you can’t live off memories, so you must drive yourself in the now with all that you have and forget the past. But Kita’s words last episode changed the complexion a bit when he stated that he doesn’t like the motto because it seems to disregard the importance of the past. As shown in his backstory, he firmly believes that we are the result of everything before us. It’s a perspective of maturity that Atsumu doesn’t yet consciously acknowledge. This helps incorporate a new thematic message and a new spin on the banner motto. It isn’t about being reckless and forgetting the past, it’s about giving it your all in the present using the experiences learned from the past that become ingrained in your body. And this concept is particularly relevant in the final point of this match. They lost primarly because the Miya twins got caught up in the fun and expression of the Monster's ball, and came up against the block of two who had tried that in the past, failed in exact the same manner (vs Aoba Johsai in season 1), and learned from their mistake through not forgetting that memory which opened the path of their growth. And though the pain of defeat can be difficult to endure, there’s always another chance to go again and experience it once more. And so with this approach, this motto turns from rash to incredibly wise and balanced. And one of the most beautiful things about Haikyuu!! is that these little tidbits of life advice that are presented to us through the characters can be used in any walk of life, in any context.

First, for what I promise is the last time for this series: the music. The "Main Theme" of Haikyuu evolves each season with the characters, each with different themes reflected in the song. It can be fun to listen through these four soundtracks in a row and compare. In Season 1, simply titled "Haikyuu": (the main melody starts at 1:50, but it might be worth it once to sort of listen from the beginning to hear how far we've come, haha) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xm_atmCClvE In Season 2, that turned into "Above" (timestamped): https://youtu.be/LL-XvudvRDA?si=fM8KvT7BVAZS1yy4&t=82 ...which in Season 3 became "Battle of Concepts": https://youtu.be/3uaktSbdSYk?si=W8Atv_fkRg0p0Mp8&t=77 and finally now into "Monster's Ball" (timestamped to the build-up to the main melody): https://youtu.be/r4SlOZcZ69k?si=-5XfNHCP4f5EhDpv&t=55 It's translated as "Monster's Banquet" sometimes, which I think is unfortunate. It's true that in Japanese, an 'utage' means a 'banquet' and not a physical ball as in volleyball, but this is one of those few times when the English would be more poetic than the original. If the author knew that there was an English word that means both the ball in volleyball and a ball as in banquet, then I'm 1000000% sure that they would've written "Monster's Ball" in English for the extra meaning / pun points. Translators often want to make things unambiguous, but for authors, and especially Haikyuu's author, I think it's clear that the ability of different people to come away from it with different, equally valid interpretations, is a goal.

(On Tsukki) also putting his whole body on the line to dive for that stray ball in the final point.

Also, just for good measure, the soundtrack "Piton" (the evolved version of Baby Bird) also made a return appearance for Hinata's bump pass: https://youtu.be/Xoa7nPR-NFA?si=ZWrZDu9ajSrj9spw I won't link the Inarizaki Cheer Squad theme, since I think (from Alex's episode description), we've probably heard that enough, haha.

Seeing Hinata going from wanting to only spike the ball in the early seasons(especially the beginning of season one) to not only perfectly receiving but being so aware of the game to know to receive the ball and place it high enough to give his teammates the time to breathe as the plays were getting chaotically rushed, just makes me cry proud tears like Suga said. Also Tsukki's growth from season 1 to 3 to now, his subtle appreciation and trust in his teammates showcased this season. I said this once before, but Tsukki's and Hinata's relationship is my favorite underappreciated relationship in this show. Especially this season, from Tsukki being present during Hinata's ball boy arc and witnessing and trusting his growth enough to know he would be present to receive Suna's spike is just the kind of moments I appreciate in this show.

Ryan

I forgot to say this, but responding to what you said about Hinata, one very important line seems to have been cut from the manga this episode. I haven't read it personally, but I've seen this on discussions. Anabara-sensei (the "junior" coach from Johzenji watching the game) sees Hinata's dig when Tsukki funneled Suna's attack to him, and he says "失礼、日向君、今後君に「マグレ」という単語を使うのはやめよう" --> "Hinata, I'm sorry. I'm not going to use the word 'fluke' for you ever again."

Athena

So satisfying, truly. I love how Hinata puts everything he learned from his training camp into vital parts of the game. Also not Mama Suga almost in tears because of Hinata's growth!!! He remembers when all he wanted was to just spike the ball...and now he's thriving in the back of the court all by himself :,)

So many great moments in this episode but the Tsukki dive was one of my favorites

Really nicely put, I think this season as a whole encapsulates those ideas so beautifully from episode 1 on.

Emman Reed

Awesome :)

Chris Sharpe

This was actually the longest match to date, being 41 chapters in the manga vs Shiratorizawa at 40.

Virgil Hawkins

Crazy late, but it’s actually more like 38 chapters because of the nekoma match in the middle

Virgil Hawkins

But wouldn’t it be 291-248=43 ? (because the match ends 291, and starts 249) Then subtract 4 because 4/5 chapters are the nekoma match. Which would make 39, if you include chapter 269.

Chris Sharpe

Recounted them. If when they first touch the ball is where it starts and walking off the court is the end, then both are 39 (although one of the Inarizaki chapters I counted has the first half in the Nekoma match). So basically the same.
