LETS GOOOOO 50 MINS OF DEMON SLAYER GOODWIN CONTENT I JUST AUDIBLY YELLED AT 1 AM

Skyler Anderson

Okay so I had to put some of my thoughts here as an Anime only. The Upper One has probably been around for hundreds of years considering it's been 113 years since another upper rank was killed. So if that demon is related to Tanjiro in any way it'd be a distant relevant I think. Also the dream sequence was interesting and idek but he called the Tanjiro look around Sumiyoshi so not tanjiro probably like a distant relative also or maybe his dad idk.

KuroNekoMataXIII

First of all....killing it with the jokes! "Set your father issues ablaze" got me laughing hard. ANd thank you for working hard to find a work around. I sincerely love your reactions and thoughts towards shows. I anticipate your uploads more than others. Secondly...I am not reading the manga, so this is only my theory based off of the anime. But I'm thinking Upper One is either the same guy from Muzan's memories & Tanjiro's dream who maybe became a demon to save Tanjiro's ancient family. OR, Upper One is a brother to the guy from Tanjiro's dream? I wouldn't put it past Muzan to have convinced Sun breathing guys brother to become a demon (or forcibly changed him) and had him kill his own bother as a demon. The guy in Tanjiro's dream said he failed to protect what was most important. And would make sense why the Sun breathing technique was thought to not exist anymore. And Tanjiro is the first in his family to do something other than selling charcoal, so his family hasn't needed to use it until now. Which I am also wondering if it was actually Upper One that killed all of Tanjiro's family. The upper rank demons have Muzan's blood mixed with theirs, which could be why Tanjiro has Muzan's scent. But if Upper One is the same guy from the dream or related to him, would make more sense why Tanjiro's family was targeted. He might remember they are the last alive that would potentially know Sun Breathing. And Muzan doesn't seem to go out of his way to do a good chunk of dirty work. And he already has them doing a mission to wipe out that other family line. BUT! that is just my thoughts and speculations at this moment. So we'll see how it all unravels! (Edit: I also just thought too, it would explain why Nezuko was purposely or accidentally spared. Since she seems to resemble the wife from Tanjiro's dream, and the Sun Breathing guy was close to their family, he might have had a fleeting moment of remembering that wife when looking at Nezuko. So therefore couldn't finish killing her, or turned her on purpose so she wouldn't die at least.)

iaani

respect for the three caretaker girls who, season after season, sacrifice their eyes for the most over-the-top animation and 3d environments in other scenes.

Jasmine Tea Enjoyer

I totally understand your hatred for Akaza but like... he does look really cool, and has an awesome voice actor, and is incredibly strong... He is my fav of the Twelve Blood Moons so maybe I am just biased. Obviously what he did is unforgivable but I love him as a villain. Also, "I don't think you really watch Demon Slayer, female characters don't really make a lot of noise". Me internally: *waits for later part of the episde* lmfaooo, also Tamayo, Shinobu, and Aoi lowkey getting shade... although they are all side characters for sure. Kanao had an extremely horrific childhood and Nezuko was transformed into a supernatural demon, so.

Anonymous

i dont think that can be the no 1 demon at the end goodwin, it was day time, how could he just be out like that without buring?

BirthdayParty

Wait. Is this a Demon Slayer Reaction? Where can I see it?

M2GZ

I like the theory that the sun breathing guys brother is the upper one, I noticed the upper 1 was wearing a purple cloak and the sun breathing guy was wearing a red one idk if that means anything but certainly NOT his dad lol. Most likely they’re people who were connected to his ancestors in some way

M2GZ

Yah since the little kid said he was protecting IT, because it was made by his ancestors I’m thinking that’s actually just a statue but I might be wrong

Jake White

I thought the kid was referring to the key he was refusing to handover to the mist hashira when he said “I’m protecting it”

KuroNekoMataXIII

I also toy with this idea because from behind, there are very subtle differences in their hair. I feel like Upper Ones is more spiky, whereas Sun Breathers seems more smooth. Could just be from demon transformation, but sometimes those subtle hints are the case breakers!

kingafreund

That Muzan speech has me curious too. Like, if he hates change of any kind so much, how come we've seen him change forms like three times? Does he hate every second? Probably, right? Since he's using those forms to play house with humans, who are nothing but food to him? I interpreted the dream as the explanation for how the earrings (and Sun Breathing) ended up being passed down in Tanjiro's family. Some of his ancestors got rescued by that Demon Slayer, and that's how they chose to repay him. Since he didn't have anyone to pass it on to himself.

Jasmine Tea Enjoyer

I mean he changes form based on when he needs to strategically. When we see him in his own enviornment in the Infinity Castle he is always Michael Jackson ddemon, and when we are first introduced to him he is Michael Jackson, so I think its safe to say he really doesn't like not being in that form.

Ryan

I think there's a bit of a paradox with this but you can be "unchanging" as in you still are who you are, while still having many possible outward appearances. If I wear an orange t-shirt one day and a blue one the next, that doesn't change who I am. I am a person who, viewed as a whole, does X, Y, and Z things and takes on A, B, and C appearances, with a set of behaviors and abilities and so on. All of them together make up "me." True change in the sense that I think Muzan is talking about would happen if the whole system that makes up "me" shifted; maybe I no longer act the way I used to, or I took on new behaviors, habits, beliefs, or appearances; maybe I get an injury that leaves permanent scars or disabilities, or my physical or mental abilities decline. In Muzan's case, it would mean no longer being able to go back to whatever form he wanted, or getting farther from his ideal self. I think I'm going to push the whole "demon-moons-as-diseases" thing for a while until I see otherwise, but to go with that line of reasoning, Muzan would represent aging as a process.

enes y

Been waiting for hxh since idk 2y it feels like

Sparker

I never got the new demon slayer reaction

Kyle Greer

Neither did I, but I just signed up this afternoon so I’m going to give him some more time because I know he’s busy.

Ryan

Ahhh.... so, he sent out the links as a mass message to all Patrons at once. Chances are you missed it by just a little bit then. Seems like he's traveling or something at the moment, but he can copy-paste. (I would here, but I think that might risk the wrath of admin)

Ryan

Also the guy from the dream has a different voice compared to Kokushibo

Anonymous

Btw Goodwin, it would seem as though episode eight was accidentally replaced by episode nine. I'm watching your reaction from the start again to refresh my memory of the series. I was wondering if you may be able to fix this error (if you see my post) if not, that's alright, in the meantime I'll just watch the YouTube video. Have a great day to anyone who reads this post :)

agoodwintv

Akaza is the most interesting villain for me cause I hate him for what he's done as opposed to him being irritating

agoodwintv

I'm about to send out episode 2 and episode 1 will be included on the list (as well as previous seasons)

Ryuga

In the anime its easy to miss but tanjiro dad is names Tanjuro :) sumiyoshi is probably a relative

Deiondre0

The Mist Hashira was a part of that meeting in Season 1. But he constantly spaced out and actually stated he didnt care about Nezuko's situation since he would probably forget anyways. So yeah I think he forgot lol

agoodwintv

It's either that or he's doing the jerk thing of pretending not to know who you are

Jasmine Tea Enjoyer

Muzan is even worse by that logic having killed Tanjiro's whole family and turning Nezuko into a Demon. But at the same time you are probably more emotionally attached to Rengoku than Tanjiro lol your love for the Flame Hashira was amazing to see.

Ryan

Just a couple of nerdy references: - The doll has "108 moves." Not subtle, but there are 108 'sins' / 'earthly attachments' in Buddhism. You remove yourself of them in order to attain nirvana. Basically, if you go to a temple and there are a lot of something, chances are pretty good that there'll be 108 of them. - Kotetsu's name wasn't written anywhere, but it sounds just like ko-tetsu ("child/little" + "iron/steel"). Everyone in the village seems to have a steel / iron-based name. (Haganezuka = steel+pile, for example) - The doll's name, Yoriichi, is written 縁壱, or basically "connection/link + 1" (the fancy, old way to write the number 1). Something about 'connecting' the past to the present, probably. The 'yori' part is the same as the 'en' in Haikyuu's Ennoshita. - You might have heard of the Sengoku period if you learned it as the English name, the "Warring States" period. It was right before Oda/Tokugawa unified the country under a single ruler. Before that, for several hundred years, it was essentially constant civil war between warring factions. The Sengoku period is romanticized a lot now because it's where things like the samurai code and (allegedly) ninjas and the tea ceremony and so on come from, but it was also a time when anyone could kill you and everyone in your village on no notice, so, today isn't so, so bad in comparison.

kingafreund

So, Alex, I'm curious what you think that hallucination of Tanjiro's meant? Like, is it a visiual representation of him unlocking a new skill? Was he really about to die and the hands were the ghosts of his family intervening? Is him smelling the stone just him smelling the hidden sword without realizing? I really loved your takes on his other training, like the stone and the swamp, so I was looking forward to your thoughts on this one!

kingafreund

I wonder about that too sometimes. It seems unlike Muzan to go out of his way to kill Tanjiro's family himself, and I can't even decide if Nezuko was turned/spared on purpose (maybe he knew Tanjiro wasn't there and left her to kill him when he returned) or just got lucky? Coz it doesn't seem like he had plans for Nezuko (he only became interested once she had proven to be unusal/escaped his grasp), so maybe she was an accidental turn, or he knew Water Pillar was coming and thought she'd die right away. Then again, I think we're supposed to believe Tanjiro's nose here, so it was probably really him. I guess if he had a century long vendetta against the Sun Breathing guy, eradicating the last traces of him/his technique makes sense. Assuming Sun Breathing guy and Upper 1 are really brothers, I could even see Muzan finding it amusing to pit siblings against each other and that's why he turned Nezuko.

Arakis

Appreciate the infodump for the easter eggs/references that get lost in translation.

agoodwintv

I watched it again and I'm still not quite sure what to make of it. I'll think about it and hopefully will figure something out for episode 3 haha

Jasmine Tea Enjoyer

I cringe everytime I hear someone say, "The only reason why Demon Slayer is okay/good is because of the action/animation" when there are countless episodes that almost exclusively focus on character development, world building, and plot progression like the first two episodes of Season Three that also, for me at least, happen to be the reason why the action sequences mean anything. I actually love and root for almost all of these characters, and even the demon's/villain's are incredibly entertaining to watch on screen. This show time and time again makes me instantly interested in new characters just off the introduction to them. I am already fascinated by both the Love and Mist Hashira, as well as the lore of this historic village, in just two episodes. Demon Slayer is not just better than other comparable battle shounen's in the animation department, but also in the writing department. Its just amazing all around, so lets enjoy the greatness together.

UndeadDesk

For me Demon slayers story is pretty good but i would never call it amazing. I enjoy watching demon slayer but i cant lie and pretend that the animation and fights arent what make me hyped for the show. Otherwise it would just kinda be another random anime that comes out that i would think is pretty good. Like i wouldnt compare it to Jujutsu, MHA or anything like that if it didnt have the animations and fights like it does, but because it does, i can consider it being close to the level of those types of animes Ill give my reasons why so that you dont think im just someone trying to be annoying. 1: Plot armor: Demon slayer really annoys me with this bs plot armor that every character gets. I understand that these characters arent meant to be equal to what you would call humans on earth, but these just random power buffs from breathing is kinda weird and annoying. Like Tanjiro gets stabbed and should be dead but because he can breath, he can tie a knot in his stomach to stop the bleeding while also fighting a upper rank demon. Same with Inosuke (And i absolutely love Inosuke) his s2 *death* is so dumb. Like he can just move his organs so this fatal blow he suffered now has basically 0 impact. This just makes me annoyed cause now im not gonna view any injuries the same because they will just make up some bs for a reason why it hasnt just killed someone. 2: Story: I admit that this could change but mostly everything that happens is Tanjiro goes somewhere, someone needs help, he helps them, demons attack and this random person helps him one way or another or he has to save them. Tanjiro gets injured and has to train for an episode or 2, then he goes back to another fight and does the same thing. I quite enjoy tanjiro but sometimes his 100% being nice thing gets annoying cause its kinda brings the darkness of the show down. 3: Zenitsu. Yeah just him as a character. Everytime he is on screen **awake** it makes the show so much worse. I understand some people like him but his 300% over the top emotions and being loud af is just too much. Im sure theres more i could think of but its 3am and im sure you dont wanna read more xD if you do wanna continue this tho, im not trying to be rude or disrespectful, happy to have a convo to try and see eachothers side :)

UndeadDesk

Seems like EP3 is trying to steal all of Haikyus voice actors.

Jasmine Tea Enjoyer

This is the exact type of comment I was talking about that makes me cringe everytime I see it. Also Zenitsu is unironically my favorite character so yeah we just ain’t on the same wavelength at all.

Skyler Anderson

I'm so confused and excited for this episode. With Upper 6 it kinda made sense to just assume you had to behead them at the same time but with Upper 4 it really doesn't make any sense or come to mind any ideas how to defeat him when he splits off into another person and can regenerate from any part. I'm preparing myself for the worst this season since season 1 had no deaths, mugen train had a death, entertainment district didn't, so I'm mentally preparing myself for a hashira to die. (Hoping for the best ;=;)

agoodwintv

I'm bracing myself... feels impossible to avoid some big deaths here. But at least.... Zenitsu and Inosuke are safe, right?

Skyler Anderson

Yeah it doesn't seem like they are involved which is kinda sad. Would've loved to see some Thunder Breathing First Form Thunderclap and Flashes. The fact that the fight is starting this early makes me feel like this is gonna be the most insane battle we've had yet.

Jason Serrano

What do you guys think of Nezuko's depiction? I feel like sometimes she gets infantilized and then sexualized... You think they should just stick to one or the other? It just seems weird sometimes when it's like awwww adorable cute kid... then leg up-skirt woman. (I know I know it's Anime)

Skyler Anderson

I'm actually gonna challenge that idea of plot armor for the shows you compared Demon Slayer to. Jujutsu Kaisen: Yuji get's stabbed through the body by Mahito like 20 times in the abdomen, through the hands, etc. and bros completely fine because plot armor. Not really any consequences because he's main character and Sukuna is a catch all plot armor buff so far. My Hero Academia: Best Jeanist in season 3 just gets donuted by All for One and survives fine. Season 6 Gran Torino gets donuted by Shigaraki and lives and he's like 70+ years old. Aizawa cuts his whole leg off and they don't even on screen wrap it up or anything. He just lives. Lady Nagant blows up ffs and doesn't appear to be officially "dead." They don't even give explanation to these things. At least in Demon Slayer they give reasons or explanations why these things saved them. Inosuke basically is a wild animal and such can do things some wild animals can do. Moving the organs is goofy asf but at least they try to explain it. Breathing as a technique to patch internal bleeding: This at least is an established thing in the world and from a minor consequence injury like being stabbed with a thin sharp rod basically. They also immediately show the limits after Rengoku get's donuted and can't breath to stop the bleeding. Conclusion: Is this to say that My Hero and Jujutsu Kaisen are bad shows because they do plot armor and don't explain it at all? No. It's more so to say that plot armor has to exist for characters and plot to progress. We know consequences exist in the world of Demon Slayer so it's fine to let the things that save them be a part of the story when we know based on the past that real consequences could happen.

Ryan

So.... Episode 3 made me realize how limited my knowledge of Buddhist mythology is, haha. Hantengu (Upper 4) is pretty imbued with it, as is his name. Han-tengu means "half/split... tengu" haha. Tengu is a type of demon with the red face and long mask. It has a slight resemblance to the mask that the swordsmiths wear, but it's actually almost the opposite purpose. I'll get to them later, but for now: the Tengu were just evil demons. Hantengu seems to split off (hence the 'han' part) different clones that are based on emotions. The angry guy with the lightning is named Sekido (積怒 = pent up anger), hence why he's always angry. The 'enjoying ourselves' guy is Karaku (可楽, 'joy'), and then the bird guy is Urogi (空喜, 'pleasure'... sorta? The first character means it's "empty" or superficial). I'm still kinda thinking that the demons-as-diseases metaphor works, since he's shedding off parts of him as in leprosy. But within Buddhism, shedding off emotions increases strength. At Buddhist temples, you'll notice that there are often two gods guarding the entrance: the god of lightning and the god of wind (Raijin and Fuujin). Clearly the first two Hantengu clones are a pretty direct reference to that, especially with the staff. There are staffs like that that you can hold directly in a bunch of temples, or even one you can try to pick up yourself in Kiyomizudera in Kyoto. As for the swordsmith masks... back in the day, some swordsmiths wore similar-looking masks with the long tube as a symbol of blowing fire into forges (they didn't actually blow into them, but it's just a metaphor). They were called 'hyottoko' 火男 (fire-man), and that's actually what's written on the back of Kotetsu's shirt. The 'hyottoko' were responsible for lighting the forge/kiln and keeping it hot. Coincidentally, the word for forge/kiln is 竈, Kamado, as in Tanjiro's last name, and the Tan- in Tanjiro means charcoal. So, most of this arc is full of metaphors that a literature or Buddhism expert could probably explain with more accuracy. I'll just do one more here to try to give an idea: The Mist Hashira's name is Mu-ichiro. Still today in sports or fighting, the sort of "ideal" in Japanese mysticism is to obtain 'mu-shin,' and "empty mind" where you act on pure subconscious with no conscious thoughts clouding your judgment. There's probably something going on with his family name, too, "Tokitou = time-transparent," but I can't think of anything off the top of my head.

kingafreund

Hm, I guess that's true, but it's not like he has much farther to go, really? Like, Demon Slayer is pretty focused on the basics. Some of it seems fantastical, but it's really just Breathing and Sword techniques. Pushing your body to its limits, honing your skills through repetition and experience. As such, I think what Love Hashira said is gonna be key, about surviving a battle with an Upper Rank being an invaluable experience. And what he was training with the kid, anticipating your opponents moves and reacting accordingly. Also, we know that the model for the doll was a Sun Breath user, so wouldn't this be the first time Tanjiro saw actual Sun Breathing used? I imagine it's somewhat different from the ritual dance passed down in his family. Like, he recognized them as sword techniques strung together, but that's probably not how it was originally taught, right? And well, whatever it was he learned with that pearl of wisdom, I still don't know...

UndeadDesk

I personally dont really see it as her being sexualized but i do understand what you mean with how when she grows, its not just in height. Her being small it to bring more comedy and lightness to the show which is does, she is adorable. But then she turns into a badass demon

UndeadDesk

Im not arguing the plot armor of others shows cause yeah it annoys me. MHA especially. Jujutsu a bit different cause there is a reason Yuji survives that, but he also has some random op character before the demon powers

Ruma Risto

Yeah, it's super jarring to me. It's even worse in the manga. We get tons of close-ups of Nezuko's chest and her kimono keeps climbing up so high we can see her bare buttocks. All the while her mentality remains that of a toddler.

Anya Mcghee

Have any more comments about Tanjiros kindness? Do you think he’d survive in todays world?

Bighead

@UndeadDesk Pretty late to the conversation but found it interesting, so here to add my personal tidbits. Like Skyler mentioned I do agree that in shounen anime it's inevitable to escape plot armour so as long as it's explained somewhat well, I've quite gotten used to it. But yeah, I agree with your other points. For me personally, Demon Slayer is average and before a certain jasmine tea lover tries to argue, it's just my personal opinion in accordance to my personal taste, so don't take offense!! People are allowed to have differing opinions to yours. Lol For me, I think the antagonist is as important to the story's quality as the protagonist, and demon slayer probably has the most under developed antagonists compared to most shounen anime like naruto, mha, jjk, one piece. Maybe it's no fault of it's own, but more a fault with the structuring of the story, where the demons are introduced arc by arc, starting off with an epic attack where the demons have the upper hand, then protagonists struggle but turn the situation around, kill demon, and a sad tragic back story for about an episode or a half in their dying moments. It's just surface level development that doesn't really connect the viewers(in this case, me) to the character. It just feels forced and poorly thought out. Also, the story of demon slayer isn't really anything different, but I have to give it props for the immersive world it's created and the execution is definitely really good. It's an entertaining story that I enjoy watching, but it's nothing new or unique, and that's totally fine. Another gripe of mine is the comedy. Granted, everyone has their personal tastes, and this type of comedy is not for me. It feels childish and weak and just repetitive, it turns a bit stale the more it goes on. But again, it's my personal take, so no offense to people who enjoy it. And lastly, it might ruffle some feathers, but the main cast just feels a bit bland to me? I can't really explain why, but Tanjiro, Nezuko, Inosuke and Zenitsu just feel one tone. The full potential of their characters is yet to be explored properly. Muzan just feels like an enormous threat with no personality, granted because we don't really get a lot of him, so I really hope we do sometime soon. And the Hashira suffer the arc by arc treatment too, though we get more of their perspective during that time so they're somehwhat better established than the demons. But yeah, I guess I just don't enjoy the structuring of demon slayer, but it's a personal choice. Despite that, there are a lot of people out there who enjoy it, so that's that I guess. I still enjoy watching it, and am looking forward to see where it goes.

kingafreund

Are the Upper 4 parts all voiced by the same guy? If so, dude has some range! I wonder if the four emotions thing has something to do with the four humors, you know, that theory about bodily fluids? What were they called, melancholic, choleric, sanguine and phlegmatic? Like, is this the eastern version of that, maybe? If this was MHA, what would Genya's quirk be? Immortal, Undead, or Zombie, or something like that? Still looks like he's in massive pain though... So, Love Hashira had actually already left, but luckily didn't get very far, so she can be our reinforcements. I love that all the Hashira we've seen so far have different running styles! Not sure about Mist Hashira's choice: We know there's two demons here, but so far they are only aware of one, and struggling. So it would be good to have a Hashira there, but if we assume Pot demon is responsible for the fish invasion, taking care of him first is probably better for the village as a whole? Tanjiro and Co have Upper 4 somewhat contained as of yet. Tokito doesn't know that though. Maybe he's hoping Tanjiro can hold out until he gets back? They are lucky Mitsuri was so close, but that makes me wonder if the demons really did their research beforehand? Why attack while a Hashira is there? Did they not know, or are they arrogant (or maybe afraid) enough not to care?

UndeadDesk

It is 5 different voice actors i believe. Original demon Hantegu - Dont think he voices anyone else that Goodwin has watched Sekido, staff demon - Kureno Sohma (Fruit Basket) Karako, Leaf demon - Iida sub (MHA), Kageyama (Haikyu) Urogi, Flying demon - Olaf dub (Frozen 1 and 2!!!) Aizetsu, water backpack demon? - Yamaguchi (Haikyu) We also have Nishinoya from haikyu, Thats Genya. He also does Bakugo in the sub and even without watching sub, i can tell its him.

Jake White

Personally, I see her reverting to her younger state as a form of energy conservation. Considering that she’s the only demon we know of to not drink blood but still have super strength and fast regenerative abilities, i just assume that she shrinks to her smallest size to save energy anytime she’s not in danger/needs to help out. I could be wrong since I’m an anime only and there will probably some explanation down the line for how she maintains those powers without drinking blood. But it seems like a reasonable assumption for now at least

Jake White

As godly of a studio as ufotable is and even with how great their usual background/environmental CG gets blended in, I gotta say that the fish head bubbling back into existence after being chopped off was some of the goofiest/clunkiest CG I’ve seen in awhileee lol let alone from them. Definitely not a big deal cause they prioritized the main fight and made sure it all looks great. But yeah still, that moment just looked super silly to me lol

Kei

Kotetsu (the mask kid who befriends Tanjiro and was saved by Muichiro in this ep) also has the same VA as Hinata from Haikyu! So basically, Hinata, Kageyama, Nishinoya and Yamaguchi are all here 😂

DefaultGoblin

i mean i think it really only is popular because of the animation. Outside of the fight scenes the show is just like average at best.

Ryan

The four emotions are from a single four-character Japanese word called 'kidoairaku' (喜怒哀楽) which just means the full range of human emotions. It's very often referred to in Buddhism as something we need to rise above in order to attain nirvana.

agoodwintv

I think he probably has a better chance of surviving in today's world than in his world :D I think a key to Tanjiro's kindness that makes it compelling is that he has other qualities that make him resilient to the risks often borne by extreme kindness and compassion. And that is something like... a combination of the fact that he never gives anything that he's not willing to give, and he's highly self-reliant. Tanjiro can't really be taken advantage of, because he'd give anything to you happily, as long as it feels right to him (and he's not a pushover that will give something he's not willing to give).

bl0odm1st

The show is such unbelievable eye candy and although people love to knock the writing of the show as mid you do an excellent job of convincing me otherwise.

kingafreund

Oh, interesting! What is the difference between joy and pleasure though? Like, when I think of the full range of human emotions, it feels like there's something missing/those two are very similar? Not sure what else there is, thinking of Inside Out, fear maybe?

kingafreund

Demon Slayer strikes again! Reminds me of Ep 19, when he (seemingly) took off Rui's head with Nezuko igniting her blood on the blade... And Mitsuri reminds me of rythmic gymnastics, like her sword is a ribbon and she's dancing or something, very unique. I don't think Tokito had a named attack yet, but his stance seems very low compared to others (?) and I guess it's speed based like Zenitsu's, like he's so fast you can't see him and that's why he's like the mist? I love the variety! I'm still thinking about the strategy behind the attack and I think they did know a Hashira was here. Looks like Tokito and Tanjiro were in a guest building when Upper 4 attacked them, so it seems they did actually go after the biggest threat first, while the village as a whole is so beneath them Upper 5 is just sending fish minions (even if the one going after the chief was slightly bigger). Upper 5 himself is either hiding, looking for something or just fooling around creating artwork, I haven't decided yet. Or he was until Tokito found him anyway. I also get the feeling the Upper Moons suffer from Saitama syndrom, you know, being so strong it's boring? Whenever they come across an opponent who can at least keep up a little, they get really excited and kinda start playing with their food, so to speak, rather then quickly taking out the threat?

Jackson perez

Definitely a killer episode this week, I was a massive fan of the Tanjiro moment as I feel it symbolizes control in Tanjiro's power. The fact he was able to activate the mark almost on command was so awesome, and my god the animation. In show where it is praised nonstop you would think it would get tired, but I can't help but commend the animators' efforts. All I will say Goodwin is that while this moment was awesome, it isn't even a top three moment of this arc. I hope you're prepared for the rest.

Jasmine Tea Enjoyer

This show does NOT miss. The CGI this season is on a whole different level than the last season, and we are only on Episode 5. The scene with Tanjiro and the demon flying through the forest, and every scene with the lightning staff ability, is made with almost an entirely CGI enviornment just like the climax episode of the last season was or whenever we have a long scene in the Infinity Castle. Ufotable are straight up flexing and we aren't even halfway through the season yet. I wouldn't be suprised if they created a whole 3D CGI render of the ENTIRE village considering theres that opening shot in the OP with the timelapse of the sun rising and setting with the light and shadows perfectly fitting the enviornment.

Jasmine Tea Enjoyer

Demon Slayer carefully crafting this episode to deliver maximum emotional damage on Mother's Day... Genya backstory had be crying the whole second half of the episode like god damn Ufotable chill tf out ya'll got me emotional last episode with the Tanjiro monologue and now this?! And we haven't even gotten into the Love or Mist Hashira's backstories yet OR even really see them get a lot of animation budget. This season is about to somehow take the show up yet another level of quality.

Jackson perez

100% this season is about to be insane. All the budget is about to be used these next 5 episodes

Chris Sharpe

“It’s puny!” *immediately shoots it* Something about that just tickles me.

agoodwintv

Yeah still can't figure out why, but it's hilarious to me every time he shoots at it

kingafreund

So, we get an explanation for why Wind Hashira is "like that" (Genya too). Makes some things click into place. Like how Nezuko's situation would be a huge trigger for him, and also a maybe insurmountable challenge. The whole "his sister is fine, but my mom slaugthered her whole family" thing, specifically. If he accepts Nezuko, then he'll have to grapple with the fact that maybe he killed his mum too early after all. That maybe, if he'd looked for her sooner, things could have turned out different. That maybe he's been slaugthering people who might have been saved, rather than putting down rabid animals this whole time. I agree that he's probably pushing Genya away to protect him. Given how they used to be like (quiet, sweet) and compared to what they are like now (loud, brash, abrasive), both brothers are probably channeling their father to push people away and protect themselves. Interesting take on the mother too: I always just assumed she got unlucky, ran into a demon and ended up a demon by accident, kinda like Nezuko, but from what we've seen, usually a highranked demon makes the call to attempt a turning when they see potential, so you might very well be right and they prayed on her desperation.

Rice

Yeah as a manga reader I usually stand by the opinion that Sanemi (the wind hashira) is the best written character in the series by far imo. He has one of the harshest backstories and still climbs to the top of the ranks despite that. His disdain for Giyuu, Tanjiro, and Nezuko also all make complete sense in terms of his backstory. Just a very well written character through and through

Jake White

Back and shoulders sliced up like salami* Fuckin left eye destroyed* Entire damn building around him explodes from Cthulhu jumpscare* Haganezuka, unbothered king: “lemme just grab my polishing stone and get back to it”

kingafreund

I love Kanamori sitting between the two, looking back and forth and being like "what's wrong with you two nutcases?!". What kind of artist do we think pot demon used to be? At first I thought calligraphy, coz his lower body and the content of his pot in general seems to be bloody ink? But he favors water-type attacks, so then I thought maybe watercolors? He's pot demon though, so pottery then? A combination of all three, like, did he color his own pots or something? The things I get stuck on...

kingafreund

Hm, since it comes and goes, I don't think those are scars, it's just confusing coz Tanjiro's mark usually shows up right over the place where his scar is? For some reason, I expected Tokito's mark to be blue like his sword, since it represents mist, not fire like Tanjiro's. But seeing that it's also deep red... are they bruises? That would explain how they come and go and it fits with the color (looks like blood)... Do they exert themselves so much they pop a couple of blood vessels? But also something mystical about it, given the thematically appropriate shapes (swirls of mist and flames)...

Jake White

Tokito’s mark isn’t blue because those marks don’t have to do with their breathing techniques, they have to do with Muichiro and Tanjiro’s sun breathing lineage. I’m an anime only too so I don’t have all the answers but I’m sure there will be more explanation about what their precise nature is at some point down the line.

Kei

Idk if anyone has told you this or not, but Muichiro and Mitsuri have the same VA as Rei and Hina from march comes in like a lion :D

Skyler Anderson

Omg I'm so excited for next weeks episode now. I didn't notice it until the second time I watched the episode but this final fight is quite literally "Love" vs "Hatred". There's just something about a cute ass girl being incredibly powerful that's so entertaining to watch. Also can we talk about the fact that so far Muichiro seems to be the only person we know about that's just solo'd an upper rank. I need to fill out my apology form since I was unfamiliar with his game.

agoodwintv

After seeing this comment I heard both of their voices in the most recent episode 😂

Bighead

I'm generally not a big fan of the "kill demon then play out their sad backstory to make us feel bad" structure of the show (though I really don't mind it either), but I just read Gyokko's on a discussion forum after the episode and thought it was unfortunate it didn't get adapted. It's disturbing but if anyone wants to know- (PS- if I'm not wrong it was written in the demon slayer fanbook by Goutoge the mangaka) " Managi(Gyokko) lived on the outskirts of a fishing village near the coast, and was disliked for repeatedly collecting fish carcasses and doing other strange things. He lost his parents at an early age (they went out fishing and never came back, their drowned bodies found badly damaged and he was fascinated by it). The villagers kept their distance from him thinking he had lost his mind. But one day Managi killed a village child who teased him and stuffed him in a jar. In a rage the child's parents stabbed Managi with a two pronged fishing fork and he was left to die there for half a day, still alive. Muzan passing by, turned him into a demon. And when he became the demon Gyokko he would prey on the flesh of humans, specifically children and modify his body to his liking"

agoodwintv

It's interesting that it didn't get adapted. Someone joked on YouTube that the flashbacks can't happen without Tanjiro

willmarko

Alex: "It's like the little mermaid" (busts out singing Aladdin) 😂

agoodwintv

Lmao oh no I didn't realize even in the edit. I think I meant "I want to be part of that world"

Jake White

Not to mention the fact that he’s still a 13-14 year old kid lol busted prodigy

Jake White

I don’t really understand what the point of showing Tanjiro’s ankle getting absolutely obliterated by the demon’s attack was, considering he literally just kept on sprinting right afterwards just with a little limp lol. brought to you from, the Inosuke organ magic school of logic lmao

Jake White

Also, wasn’t Genya’s entire body littered with dozens of gaping holes at the end of last episode? How much of their fight did we have to skip in order for him to have regenerated alllll that back?? Lol

kingafreund

Tokito trashtalking pot demon gives me an ungodly amount of joy, not gonna lie. I guess he retained a bit of an edge, even after getting his memories back. It's like he blended nice twin and mean twin into one person, and that's now his personality. Makes sense, I guess you wouldn't come out of that experience completely unchanged. That Rengoku flashback hit me right in the feels! Kinda feels like Tokito could only just now grieve his loss? Same with the old blacksmith from last episode, I get the feeling the amnesia severely impacted his ability to care? And now that he's back to himself and does care again, there's a backlog of things to process...

Skyler Anderson

Just want to add cause it seemed you missed it in the ending but next episode of the last episode of the season. It was announced that it's going to be a 70 minute finale (TV size) so it'll likely be around a 50 minute long episode.

Mima

favorite kpop group Alex!!! GO!!!

agoodwintv

😂 The height of my fandom was right before and right after I came to Korea the first time, so T-ara, Kara, Infinite (really just 1 song but it's special to me), Black Pink of course, and a whole assortment of songs / groups from that period. I don't deliberately listen to k-pop as much when I live here cause it's just in the ether around me so much already but I do like New Jeans (surprise surprise), and IVE. I'm not the biggest fan of Aespa but I am in love with 2 of their members. And then random old school answer I really love Cherry Filter cause my ex used to listen to them all the time

Mima

not only do u have taste in anime but music too??? i’m not much of a girl group listener from the kpop scene but i do love new jeans and ive songs. T-ARA IS CRAZY I LOVE THEM. i’m a big fan of boy groups (surprise surprise lol) stray kids especially idk if u’d know them. I was also wondering if you ever considered reacting to some K-Dramas if you have any interest in that??? i think you would LOVE some of the shows although the episodes are much longer in comparison… so..

agoodwintv

On the boy group side I forgot Big Bang! I'm familiar with Stray Kids but I can only think of one of their songs by name offhand. I'm sure I'd know more if I heard them. As for k-dramas, I've been wanting to get into them for so long as it would serve multiple purposes for me, but it's tough to find one that doesn't feel over reliant on the standard tropes. I'm open to suggestions

Mima

I get it, honestly it's kind of hard to find plots that aren't corny or cringy, like even the good shows would have something within it as a sub-plot or something that would feel a bit cheesy, but I'd say the same could be said about standard anime tropes, so as long as you're happy to look past those bits I think you'd really enjoy them. I'll list out my personal favorites and give a spoiler free description of each. My Name: Netflix original, a revenge story with a young girl as the main protagonist, she’s a good fighter—and is looking for a killer after the death of someone closest to her with the help of organized crime. This show does such a great job with the mystery aspect and the female lead is just perfectly written imo Weak Hero Class One: A model student who uses his brains to fight against Korea’s incredibly disturbing school violence. The reason this show was so gripping for me in particular was the blossoming friendship and love of three teenage boys with their own troubles and faults. Extracurricular: Another netflix original. This show is pretty dark so viewer discretion is definitely advised, but it’s AMAZING. Another story about a model student, but this time, he actually runs an illegal business to pay for his education. An incredible story on morality and human nature.

Mima

forgot to mention the first two are 8 episodes long and the last one is 10!!!!

agoodwintv

Ah I actually watched half of Extracurricular with someone I was seeing. But then a guy friend of her's did his best to slander me and used his oppa powers to pressure her into ending things with me. So I never finished it

Mima

that…..sounds about accurate. although this scenario is completely different, when i studied in seoul i had experiences where the korean girls would do really nasty things if they found me talking to their oppa friends out of pettiness and in turn it made it really hard to actually find people who genuinely liked you cos a lot of the time the men were also in it looking for “open mindedness” if u get me and then the rest were too shy talking to a foreigner…. uni was fun lol

M2GZ

Sice I don’t think anyone’s mentioned it I will but Mitsuri was actually Rengoku’s tsugoku so she trained with him until she became a hashira, if you remember from season 1 when they show the breathing styles love breathing was an offshoot of flame breathing so that’s most likely why. I remember at the end of the Mugen train she was one of the people that seemed the most heartbroken by the news.

Jake White

And I stand corrected lol. Clearly it’s some sort of just physical boost since seemingly anyone strong enough can acquire those marks, since Mitsuri’s got one now too

kingafreund

So, we have Tanjiro: Sense of Smell, Inosuke: Sense of Touch, Zenitsu: Hearing and now Genya: Taste? There's one missing, who do you think will get it? ;)

Skyler Anderson

My ass impatiently waiting for the conclusion to the season. Man that last episode was a BANGER

Matthew Richson

I’ve been neglecting to comment this whole season, but things will take quite a turn from here. The next arc that’s being marketed for next season is actually rather short, only nine chapters. It’s a calm before the storm arc. So I do wonder what Ufotable actually intends to do…

Bighead

They should add some anime original beach hangout/training episodes.....

Matthew Richson

@Goodwin, well after the next arc, which is called the Hashira Training arc, the final battle begins… it’s a long one split into two parts. Spanning a total of 69 chapters, The anime has a total of 78 chapters left to adapt.

Aidan Pullen

I can only think of one reason for Tanjiro to still keep Nezuko in that box. Since she regains her energy with sleep, rather than consuming human blood like other demons, she needs to be unconscious for long periods of time. This doesn't mesh super well with Tanjiro's lifestyle of constantly running around Japan to kill demons, so carrying her in the box is just the easiest way to keep her nearby while she sleeps. That said, he could like, add some padding, or carve out a window or something now that she won't die in the sun - it could be a lot more comfy.

agoodwintv

Before this episode I was surprised to hear the length. But this one makes it pretty clear that the conflict is gonna get pushed to a head pretty fast

Skyler Anderson

So regarding Upper 4 Hantengu's backstory, I think they're trying to convey that he had some sort of mental multi personality syndrome. I think that's why his power is having all these different personalities that split off and himself is so scared of all those people in him and what he's capable of. The backstory takes a much sadder and depressing turn if you look at it that way cause he's just a scared guy whose literally like schizophrenic or something. I might be wrong and he might just be a piece of shit but that's at least my interpretation. As for the whole episode, I loved how they always find a way to make this show feel like a movie. The animation, story, and music was just so stellar this episode. I loved the music so much this episode and have listened to just the OST in my own time since it's such a banger. Also Ufotable's most notable animator Nozume Abe whose known for animating almost every single big moment of the show wasn't even present for this episode which shows that Ufotable can make such a stellar animated episode without even their biggest hitters. People call this season the least of the 3 so far but I loved it so much regardless since I'm so invested in the story. 9/10 season for me

Ryan

On Hantengu, that is an almost Tanjiro-like level of compassion and generosity of spirit. Hats off to you. :)

kingafreund

I'm honestly a little confused about them blindfolding him again? Like, you guys know you can't stay there right? Muzan knows where your village is now, you have to move it elsewhere. But maybe they want to bring Tanjiro to the Master to report and that's why they did it, his location is still secret. Regarding demon backstories, I think they just want there to be variety? Like, people are different, and so are the demons they turn into. There's your Nezukos and Tamayos (few), the lucky ones like Yushiro and Asakusa guy who had someone look out for them, the poor souls who had no choice and then lost themselves, the ones who felt they had no choice but to lean into it, the ones that did choose it and trived, the ones that enjoy it and Muzan (the worst). So not everyone will be sympathetic, but ultimately, they are all to be pitied, I guess, one way or another. I do wonder about Muzan's doctor, though. On one hand, it's good news because if demonisation is the result of some drug, reverse-engineering a cure seems possible now, but on the other hand, what the hell was up with that guy?! Did he just create a demon-drug by accident? On purpose? Is magic envolved? I also wonder about Muzan's illness. Was he just sick/born with a bad constitution like Rui, or is this maybe the same curse the Master is suffering from? I feel like I read somewhere that the Master's family was cursed as punishment for Muzan becoming an abomination, but I'm not sure, and that very specific age of "you won't make it til twenty" and the symptoms remind me of the curse? Don't know!

kingafreund

Nezuko is interesting, because she seems to both have limited awareness of herself (the child-like mind?) and also a really strong sense of self, for her to resist and twist the demonisation to suit her needs? She spent the whole fight in her beserker form without losing control, too. Definite improvement from last time! It's kinda up in the air what exactly is happening with her. Tamayo's letter suggests that sun-resistance is something she's been working towards this whole time, but I do think she was genuinely prepared to sacrifice herself here. She looked surprised to have made it happen at the end there, I guess it was a do or die kinda scenario, where she had thought about changing her body to withstand the sun before, maybe even worked towards it, but wasn't sure she could actually do it in time? Maybe Tanjiro's whole family has an affinity for the sun/fire? After all, Nezuko is the only demon ever to develop sun-resistance and Sun Breathing is Tanjiro's preferred Breath Style. I wonder if that's also why he seems to be able to learn multiple Breath Styles? Since Sun Breathing was the Original Breath, and the others are offshoots, and we've seen him do both Water and Thunder Breathing now. I imagine he'd have more trouble learning the more specialised offshoots though, the ones only one person can do, like Sound, Love or Insect Breathing, those lean pretty heavily into the creators special abilities. But anyway, blazing warrior of the sun Tanjiro putting the fear of God into Upper 4 was amazing! As was the whole Season! I'm so excited for the next one!

Just wanted to say thank you so much for sending out the links. I have seen several other reactor channels have to stop uploading their full length reactions recently for DS and I am very glad to see that you found an alternative! I typically check out on channels until they circle back to the shows I subscribed for, so I didn't even realize there was an issue on your channel too until I went to see how far along you had gotten in season 3! And I absolutely binged your reaction for all of season 3 today, by the way. I really loved your insight and commentary (as always, you have a perspective that I feel that a lot of people miss when they watch DS and I forgot how much I enjoyed it). Again, thank you for figuring out how to get us the reactions without endangering the channel, I know that had to have been stressful. It is greatly appreciated!!

Kollie123

I just wanted to say you really hit the nail on the head with noticing the turn the series will take now that muzan has clearer motivations and a target to go after. Nezuko overcoming the sun is in a lot of ways the point of no return I don’t think I’ve seen anyone pick up on this in the writing like you have
