I’m so glad the dub released 2 episodes this week

Noah Hoorn

Haven't watched yet. So pumped for this! Thanks Alex. Literally posted right as I settled in after getting home.

Ryan

Past Avatars, you say.... so, Nana Shimura seems like a Roku to me. The fourth user seems like maybe the Kuruk analog. After that I got nothing.

Gran Torino never had One For All. He was just Nana Shimura's friend/teammate and All Might's teacher

i_am_jam

You were actually really close with the text at the end lol it’s actually “the final arc begins” or something like that ish

Ryan

:) That is indeed exactly what it says. 終章開幕 = shuu-shou-kai-maku --> final-chapter-open-curtain

Ryan

So, I've said on other shows multiple times how incredibly hard dubbing is to do, even compared to subtitles, since you're not just restricted in terms of culture and language barriers but also by timing. I don't say this as criticism of the dub, but I do think it's too bad that Endeavor's line in particular at 23:20 sort of got lost in that. It was a very good line in the original, so I wanted to try to convey some part of it, but trying to translate it myself now, I realize how hard it is to get right, so.... this also is a bit unsatisfying, sorry: Reporter: "You're asking us to leave our homes and stay trapped where you can watch us until some imagined, hypothetical 'safe' future time that we might never see?" Endeavor: "It's so that you will see that future. [...] and until then, you can watch me."

I don't think Gran Torino had one for all he was just a friend of Nana

There’s a really fun video someone made on this that goes into some real specifics for anyone interested https://youtu.be/pw_uuwRCShQ

So yeah, welcome to end of Act 2 and the start of a much different 3rd and final act of MHA.

Matthew Richson

@Goodwin, don’t you remember what All for One said back in season 3 episode 10? “From the person who had One for All before you… Nana Shimura.”

Skyler Anderson

You already saw it in the comments but I was so confused when you kept mentioning Gran Torino like he was a holder LOL. He was All Might's teacher after Nana Shimura died. Also the text as the very end says "The Final Act Begins."

tanasia

the final act begins

Jake White

Idk if anyone’s told you this or not, but at around 25:25ish when the screen is black with cherry blossoms falling, that’s a direct callback to the season 5 finale where it showed the exact same black screen of flower petals falling as Hawks said, “I hope that by the time the cherry blossoms fall next year, we can all be smiling.”

Lol you def just forgot Goodwin, All Might has talked about his "teacher" or "sensei" being Nan Shimura mulitple times and that Shigaraki's Mom is the one who had One For All before All Might which makes the whole family connection between the two a massive plot point.

Chris Sharpe

Definitely very reminiscent of Aang and the past Avatars, the struggle is very similar. It’s refreshing to see someone with this much passion and joy for the series, the series always gets shat on by hardcore anime fan contrarians that are like “oh, you like mid Hero Academia, clearly you don’t know what good anime is, how about Code Geass, an anime for true anime fans” or some shit like that (no offense to Code Geass). It’s nice to see someone have this much genuine passion for the series and dig so deep.

Ryan

Whenever something is sufficiently popular, people are strongly incentivized to dislike it because they know people they dislike who like it. Sad that it isn't more often the other way around: finding common ground to like each other with.

At this point MHA gets so much hate its not even that phenomenon you are correctly pointing out Ryan, lots of people just actually hate the show for some reason. I'd say its a combination between what you are talking about with popularity, the batshit insane online tiktok/twitter MHA fanbase, and the fact its an action shounen that is trying to be more wholesome and positive than anything else coming out right now. Also some western fans hate the "sexualized" character designs which is hilarious cause thats actually one of the best parts of the entire show, Hori's art style is genius and his artistic ability comes out the most imo when it comes to his character designs.

Man, I've been waiting for you to see this one, is it your new favorite episode? I knew you'd love Deku's speech! I completely agree with you, but I do wonder how much the public really knows about what happened? Like, in a way, you could argue it was the Heroes' fault for doing a preemptive strike they then lost all control over, biting off more than you can chew if you will. But if the public just assumes the whole thing was a Villain attack they failed to stop and still comes after them this hard... Don't wanna know what the reaction would be to be honest. Not sure why you'd think Gran Torino was a past holder, unless it's a joke that went over my head? The end there manages to be both really sad, but also very exciting at the same time, quite the feat! I got Harry Potter vibes too, after this my prediction was that we were headed for a Battle of UA, Battle of Hogwarts style, with people moving in for shelter and the Vilains taking over and all. Gotta bring Deku back to school somehow after all! It's called My Hero Academia and I refuse to relinquish the Academia part, haha!
