I'm so glad that you're already seeing that the story is more than just volleyball and the sport is just a vessel for expressing the growth and passions of these characters. I remember being so heartbroken and confused when I first watched this seeing the main characters lose cause all of the build up of the first season led up to this conclusion. Going back to episode 16 of this season there are always winners and losers. In this match they unfortunately ended up being the losers. It may be a work of fiction but the main characters aren't invincible and even they can bleed. I always cry during the final clip of them eating so emotionally.

Season 2 builds on everything you love about the show and surpasses even those expectations

First of all, is that really a thing to tell people to meditate on death? That seems rather extreme, but I guess you'd have to do that in martial arts and the like. I'm curious to know what Goodwin thinks is in store for Season 2. Where does Karasuno go from here? What do they do now? The third-years have to decide whether to retire or take their chances and stick around to go for the Spring Tournament, which would possibly make getting into college harder. But everyone on the team (except Tsukki on the outside, anyway) felt this loss and needs to find something to move forward on.

Language nerd comments: - 15:25 I really like Takinoue's words there. Like, what *do* you say to people who are devastated from a loss? What can you even do in that situation? And then the harshest part of all of it: they have to leave the court right away before they even have time to process what happened because the next game starts right away. - "Kageyama, are you okay?" That's another scene where people who have negative emotions are literally washing them away with running water. It keeps coming up. I wonder if people really do that in Japan when they lose, but I've never seen it in person. Do people do that? Literally try to "wash away bad feelings" with running water? It keeps coming up in the show and I've always been curious. - Takeda's speech is one of my favorites. I'm not a huge fan of the subtitles, but they get the point across. He's using the multiple meanings of the word for contest/competition/trial (試練, 'shiren'). Basically, just like the tournament is a 'test of strength,' isn't losing itself like its own kind of 'test'? A test to see if you can get back up on your feet after being knocked down to the ground.

In regards to Oikawa and his teammates, he is the exact opposite of Kageyama’s “King of the Court” phase. Kageyama forced his attackers to adapt to him, forcing impossible sets on them that they “should have gotten”. Oikawa adjusts to his attackers, giving them the exact sets they want. What was truly crushing for Kageyama was the fact that his former teammates, whom he may have still thought “they just weren’t good enough”, were not only doing incredible with Oikawa as the setter, but we’re having fun.

This is honestly one of my favorite after-credit scenes of any anime

I think the idea is to focus on the most terrifying thing and gradually come to accept it, in the attempt to gain greater perspective over life as a whole as well as a sort of resilience training. If you can look at and accept the most terrifying thing, theoretically other challenges become easier and other truths less threatening. About predictions, I didn't realize there was a spring tournament so I assumed we were going to jump to next year. Now I'm not so sure!

Thinking about it more I can connect with the washing away bad feelings idea. I definitely spend more time in the shower when I'm going through something. Speaking of meditation, maybe there's something about being submerged in running water that pulls focus to the senses and dulls the pain

Yeah "Spring" is an unfortunate name, since the qualifiers are at the end of the summer, and then actual tournament itself is just after New Year's. It *used* to be in late February, but it was moved to January in the early 2000s so that 3rd-year students could participate. The tournament nickname stayed the same, though. The "Spring Tournament" (Haru-kou) is actually the biggest one. Inter-High is kind of considered the "warm-up" / secondary. The Spring Tournament is the prestigious national championship. April: School begins Late May/Early June: Inter-High <-- Season 1 ends here August: Preliminaries for the Spring Tournament October: Regional Qualifiers for the Spring Tournament January: Spring Nationals Late February: Regional championships for new teams with 2nd-years as leads (where Asahi got crushed by Date Tech) March: Graduation

Furudate does an amazing job of subverting the expectations of the main team winning. We get so attached to the characters and the team that this loss feels like our loss. We spent so much time seeing them as a whole grow together and we end with this crushing defeat... The second season is gonna be great! Where does the team go from here? What will they do? What will come of the third years? How will they deal with the loss? Love that you got emotional at the end. It hurts so much seeing the boys crying over their meal.
