So, Askeladd is the last descendant of the Welsh legend Artorious who existed 500+ years ago. Askellad's mother (Lydia) was Welsh and is through whom he is related to Artorious. His father (Olaf) was a Danish conqueror who took Lydia as his concubine. There seems to be confusion in the comments about your reaction to the plan he conveyed to the Welsh leaders. I think you understood he was telling them that he is using the Danes so that he can groom Canute and get him on the throne. By doing so he'd be able to attain a high position in Denmark and make sure his mothers homeland Wales is protected from the much stronger Danish Kingdom. I think your prediction was basically that it goes farther than that or that he wasn't being totally truthful/leaving some things unsaid. And some interpreted that as you not understanding that conversation, but I think you understood it lol. As for Askellad's truthfulness about his intentions and your expectation that he wants to conquer... time will tell. Glad you are enjoying it so far!

I don't think there was any confusion in the comments, it was clear that Goodwin was thinking as though Askeladd was using Canute and the Danes to potentially conquer other lands and have some form of material gain. Maybe that wasn't what he believed entirely, but it's what was said by Goodwin in the video, so it's the only thing we can go off of. Why make us out to be less knowledgeable just to prove your point? Very odd.

Confusion ≠ less knowledgeable. Didn't mean any harm or offense. My understanding while watching was that Goodwin didn't quite understand Askellad's lineage, which is why I clarified that. But from his reaction it seems he thought that there were more layers/a larger goal than what Askellad was saying to the Welsh leaders. Just bc he didn't acknowledge what Askellad was saying doesn't mean he didn't understand it. Maybe I'm totally wrong and Goodwin completely misunderstood, but he's usually pretty consistent with understanding stuff. He also has the benefit of basically rewatching the episode when editing it.

I got that he's using Canute for influence in the Danish kingdom, and also that he seems very pro Welsh in this episode, but was unsure if that was where his ambition ended, or whether or not it will end there as he grows in power.

I was going based off of you confidently saying "he's aiming for it all", which I took as you believing that's Askeladd's true goal. If I interpreted that wrong, then that's definitely on me.

Jesus is here! To spread love to his followers. Death to his enemies,” “Ugh, I hate Askeladd, but I need him so badly. My de facto Daddy,” (PLEASE) “Canute’s war is an internal one,” “Ah yes my dear son that I left to die in London. After having given him an impossible task, knowing he couldn’t complete it. I love him so much,” “Canute’s biggest fear: it wasn’t London. It’s public speaking,” “He’s sweating so hard it’s coming out of his back hair,” “Askeladd just the father figure that nobody really wanted but everyone deserves. Secretly bringing out greatness in young kids,” “There’s a certain line beyond which you’re not protecting them anymore, you’re just dulling them,” “Danger and trial is always going to show up at one’s doorstep,” “I guess Askeladd is a Daddy to him too. Askeladd is everyone’s Daddy, turns out,” “Love you too, Daddy,” “If you challenge yourself big enough, you realize that the things you thought were kind of life and death are really insignificant, and from that point on, you can navigate them effortlessly,” “It’s like climbing rungs of a ladder, but with each rung of the ladder, you raise the floor,” (With nearly every new insight this man gives, the more I absolutely cannot wait for him to see 3-gatsu no Lion) “He’s your enemy but he’s also your dad,” (how many series does this describe lmao)
