This was personally my favourite show of 2021, that's including all Anime and all other TV. I have played 0 hours of League of Legends and knew absolutely nothing about the world of this show going into it, and I came out having experienced one of the most thrilling and emotional 9 episodes of animated media I have ever had the pleasure of witnessing. Everything about this series is masterful, from the writing, to the acting, to the animation. It checks every single box, no episode is lower budget or fillery, no plot point is forgotten or shown for no reason, every character has their purpose and complexity. This seriously came out of left field and instantly went viral off of its quality alone, it still retains a 9.1/10 on imdb making it one of the highest rated TV shows of all time and in the top 5 animated shows ever made. No western animated show has ever so quickly gotten this much universal acclaim, and in my opinion it is all completely deserved.

When this series came out it was quite unique for Netflix standards the way it was released. Basically, the show was released in sets of three episodes, so when it first came out only the first 3 episodes were available and MANY people had caught up with it within that first week. This was definitely done to enhance the narrative experience of the show, as you can pretty nicely divide up the general plot of the first 9 episodes into perfect 3’s, especially the first 3 episodes. Not gonna spoil anything ofc, but let's just say these first three episodes of Arcane are VERY unique and different from the six that come after it. They very much act as a prologue or introduction to this story and world.

God I miss this show. It’s only been like 2 months since it ended but without episodes releasing the hype died down a bit. Super happy to get back into it. I’ve seen many reactions to Arcane but it’s Goodwin’s I was most looking forward too.

you said if Vi really cared about Powder she shouldn't bring her on these missions, and while i would normally agree with that under normal circumstances, Vi is just trying to prepare Powder for the world they live in. if Powder doesn't learn how to survive from a young age she won't be able to make it in the underground

yeah good point. The thing Vi can do thats the most caring is teach Powder how to survive in this world, which means bringing her on missions. If she kept her sheltered and protected her from the reality of living in the under city, that would have MUCH more harmful effects long term.

This is the best show I’ve ever watched and I don’t say that lightly. I can’t wait til you get to where things start really ramping up. I felt the same way starting episode one. Powders one of my favorite characters of all time because of this show. But there is all my hype and praise comments, can’t wait for more Arcane! :D

i definitely disagree with your criticisms, maybe because i grew up in extreme poverty and around a lot of bad stuff, but i really connected with the struggle of the kids trying to make it in a world that's too dark for them

Honestly, I like how they were released because each three episodes feel like their own movie and story contained within itself, making it feel like a trilogy instead of show. :D

Yeah I get where your coming from low-key. First 2 episodes were kind of basic for me but after the 3rd episode it REALLY hooked it's claws in. Don't worry, this series is actually worth the hype 🥲.

A lot of people saying the first two episodes weren't great for them...I completely understand where yall coming from but honestly I was HOOKED from the beginning with this show. A lot of standout scenes in this first episode that proved the Directors knew what they were doing. The alleyway fight scene with Vi and the gang, the intro of the whole show with no dialogue (Amazing visual storytelling, show don't tell), and the Vi/Vander scene all were masterful and were some fantastic character setup right off the bat. This show seriously impressed me and was 9/10 right from the start...than yes the third episode just blew my mind like everyone else.

Nick...just go in with an open mind. That's all I can say. For a lot of people including myself, this show is seriously some of the best animated content I have EVER seen. Not pulling any punches, I cannot hype this show up enough.

I think it's safe to say from a visual front you are watching the best from the east (Demonslayer) and west. These shows utilise 3D so well and it's interesting to see how the different animation philosophies interrelate and differ. This show was a stand out for me last year that's for sure!

I think Vi does a really good job of encouraging Powder emotionally. Vi is fighter but Powder is NOT. Vi understands that but it doesn’t stop Powder from wanting to be just like her big sister. Powder is kind of like the black sheep of the group. She isn’t as athletic or as strong as the others and clearly she’s a few years younger than them too. This idea thats she’s not enough is reinforced by Milo who blames Powder for just about everything that goes wrong.

It's interesting to watch this first episode again after seeing the entire series, it's certainly more slowly paced than later episodes which I feel lends itself well to setting the viewer in the world. The quality of the art and production was what held my attention more than the story or characters. I also agree that the setting feels less threatening than it might have been, probably because of a combination of the music, bright art style and the fact that we don't really have any emotional stakes in the characters yet. I believe this episode was completed at least a year before the other episodes went into production because of funding issues, it's interesting to see the improvement in quality of later episodes although this one already sets a high bar.

I will say that you don’t need to know anything about League of legends to enjoy this show, so be careful when reading comments. You’re somewhat iffy on the first episode so that might encourage people to spill details to entice you when you don’t need to be more enticed.

The first time I joined your patreon was for the Avatar rewatch. Binged the whole thing in a month and thoroughly enjoyed. Now I'm back again to see what you have to say about Arcane. It's so good because it's character driven, there's a lot of fun to be had trying to understand the thought processes of each of the characters, especially as the show goes on and explore just how human every character is.

I had the same immediate "older-sibling-esque" reaction to Vi bringing Powder along with them, because it's hard not to jump straight to "she is a child and should not be here." But I really think that's our distance from adolescence talking. When I was a teenager, I really think letting your younger sibling come along with your friends was a huge deal, like it showed how much you were willing to give them opportunities to be your equal. As an adult, it's easy to look back and realize how inappropriate certain settings are for younger kids, but I really think Vi inviting Powder along is real indication of her love for her, even if it seems wrong to us 30+ oldies, haha.

Wherein I watch every Goodwin upload in chronological order, beginning with the first Avatar reaction series, keeping track of over 30 running jokes and categories as I go.
