Me: Oh is it “Akito sad backstory-o’Clock” already? Maybe this will be the time I finally feel bad and sympathize with her. Akito: LMAO stab

Geneva The Weeba

Y'all remember when Goodwin said that the RITSU EPISODE was dark?? Those were the days

benj

There is God. And then there is Shigure. This man has been scheming and plotting since he was a little kid and has been instigating almost everything in the plot. Without him and his genius this show’s story wouldn’t exist, literally. He is the true mastermind.

agoodwintv

It is true what I have heard multiple times. I did not know the storm that was coming

Geneva The Weeba

Ren: "But I see what they don't." Goodwin: "*MONEY*"

Geneva The Weeba

Akira: you're a special child, Akito, made to be loved by everyone. Akito: even mommy?? Akira: let's not get ahead of ourselves, now.

benj

💀💀Im dead, this applies to Yuki’s mom too who just wants that sweet Sohma cash.

benj

You being worried about what Akito was gonna do with the scissors when she was angry at Rin has come full circle, you were very right to not want Akito to be given ANYTHING sharp. For the love of god (no pun intended) keep dangerous objects away from this psycho.

agoodwintv

You're a special child Akito, made to be loved by everyone. And by "everyone" I mean "only Shigure."

Nick

Not sure if this has been asked before, but considering AOT starts airing again tomorrow, how is the channel going to do incorporate it into schedule?

Amber

kyo thinking tohru couldnt love him back always breaks my heart :(

Francesca White

wow i just gotta say your commentary this episode was amazing!! also i don't think it's ever explicitly said, but Akito snapped when Kureno's curse broke

Megan

kureno: “let’s change akito” akito: *stabs him* me: GOD DAM-

Megan

I’m so excited for next episode. Actually the whole next week with AOT coming back!!

Francesca White

dude it's actually insane to go back and watch the early show and see how much darker it's gotten, but also how much deeper and richer it's become over time. i honestly think Takaya, the author, is a master at storytelling.

Crystalrose

Your shocked face when the outro started playing lololol

Francesca White

it's so sad hearing Akira on his dying bed, talking about how he hopes that the fact that he and Ren had a special child means that their love was special, and how he wishes Ren and Akito could've gotten along. then we just flash to this present, with a mother and daughter fighting each other for an empty box with a knife, and we think "is there really any hope left? look how twisted this situation has become".

Serralinda

Akito hits rock bottom, determined to take as many down with her as she can. Stabby stab! The Soma family's traditions, all built on a half-forgotten legend/story/tale, are what created the environment that ended up twisting them all. Some are "true believers" (Akira, the head maid), some have put all their faith in it (Akito), and some are finally finding something else to believe in (Kureno, Momiji, Hiro) or at least are willing to take a chance on freedom. Then there's Rin, who rejected the idea of "divinity" completely. Rin wasn't wrong and Akito's been fighting a lost (totally lost) battle against her ever since Kureno's bond broke years ago (I'm pretty sure his bond breaking is what turned Akito dark and glassy and stabby). Hiro's mom knew right away because he was holding his sister without turning. She's an awesome mom anyway. He wants to be a better person to set a good example for his sister, to protect and guide her. He also has a family who gives him unconditional love and support, so it isn't that strange to think his bond broke. He isn't going to be completely alone the way Momiji is but then Momiji has hope. Kureno...found his freedom in flight, then sadly tied himself down ANd lost his ability to fly. Akito isn't wrong to hate him for staying - his sympathy/pity didn't do her any favors, though of course, it was with the best intentions. Ugh, Tohru. This probably isn't the best time for your confession, sweetie. On top of everything else, it's raining and Kyo doesn't do well in the rain.

Francesca White

there's something so foreboding about the way Kyo slowly turns to look at Tohru at the end. it's like, we as the audience know they're in SUCH different head spaces right now. in another series we might be super excited to see the main couple have a conversation, but here we're like "oh fuck no"

benj

I have also been wondering this. Those AOT comment sections finna be LIT 🔥 Time for a full on debate war.

agoodwintv

Ah okay thanks for clarifying! Maybe this is a spoiler but now I'm wondering if perhaps the breaking of the curse comes not from the zodiac animals but from Akito herself. In which case maybe the father's death was a catalyst for the breaking of Kureno's curse?

Anonymous

I really like how Akito and Tohru parallel each other in the sense that both of their father's died when they were young, and they left both of their mother's devastated. Kyoko ultimately chose Tohru over her grief and thus lived for the sake of loving Tohru, where as Ren let her grief consume her and spent the rest of her life hating Akito. Can you imagine if Kyoko ended up choosing to "go be with Katsuya" instead? Tohru ALREADY resented Katsuya because of that, she probably would have then resented Kyoko too for abandoning her. It would have been a COMPLETELY different Tohru, none of the motherly wisdom, no practiced kindness, who knows maybe she would have followed in Kyoko's footsteps and joined a gang! What a different way to meet Uo chan 😭

agoodwintv

Haha yeah in hindsight that is incredible. When that conversation started I (thinking it would happen this episode) decided I needed a break to digest one trauma before heading into the next.

Amber

I've also been WAITING to see your reaction to that moment with kureno bc i was soo shocked when it happened the first time i watched. Akito's violent actions not being checked definitely came to a head here.

ArmdVctr

I always thought about an AU with delinquent Tohru and Well adjust Zodiacs helping her.

Jacob Keyser

So excited to see your reaction to the next episode

Lysieblu

I just want to say.. I am loving this comment section. Also, because the characters mirror each other its fun ti imagine what another character would have done in this situation. Like would Tohru would have been like Akito? I don't think so. Environments can be shitty but I also feel like there is something innate that we have. There are people who grow up in bad environments and use that as motivation to be a better person; Who doesn't want anyone else to go through what they had to. There are those who have good environments and become bad people. IDK but it's fun to think about.

Mortis

My comment somehow got deleted so I’m posting it again So something that a lot of people don’t get or don’t wanna admit this episode is that while it absolutely doesn’t justify stabbing him akito is right about how much kureno has screwed up and hurt her. He pitied her so he stayed with her and listened to her but he never helped her. He didn’t fully embrace her or try to teach her or help her move on he just stayed. But that hurt her even more because she knew it wasn’t real even as she used his closeness to convince herself. People try to excuse kureno’s faults because they want to blame akito for everything even things that aren’t her fault but this idea of half hearted kindness being more hurtful has been a theme throughout the series. It was present when master wanted to be sure tohru loved kyo as a person and didn’t just pity him and kakeru even mentioned half hearted help hurting more when yuki wanted to get involved when his fan girls weee licking on machi during the cultural festival. Again it doesn’t justify stabbing him and akito still has a lot to own up to but kureno is not an innocent victim whose done nothing wrong

raesh

This us where the ED felt like such a whiplash.... I call this episode Akito's unravelling And the best burn in anime history...

bl0odm1st

Are we doing TYE this week or nah?

K. Verklärung

I'm reminded of the first season when they introduced Kisa. How do we learn to love ourselves if we were never told that we deserved to be love? How does one begin when you don't have the tools to? I feel like so many things has been building up towards this moment with Akito for so long.

Anonymous

when i watched this episode my feelings were all over the place, but something about hiro holding his sister when his curse broke made me sob honestly and his mother being so understanding was great. i find so interesting how every single member whose curse breaks always mourns for the loss of the bond in the sense of losing that feeling of belonging, to know since the day you were born there is a group of people that will always be connected to you in a way unlike any other and suddenly losing that must be so weird. the kyo angst and thought process i also love, when you rewatch the show you just understand his character in a whole new level. great reaction as always, the next episode will be increible:)

Crystalrose

I'm not disagreeing with you necessarily... but it pains me to hear it because i feel like people are putting too much pressure on this character for doing what he thought was right. Kureno being the kind person he was promised to stay by Akitos side. He was probably 14 when he made the promise has kept it since. Yeah maybe him showing half kindness wasn't doing Akito any favors but that's really all he had to give at that time. He wasn't this all knowing person he just wanted to support this poor kid that was clinging to him... as he grew older i think he started to understand the consequences of his actions but that was only after growing up and seeing the results.

raesh

Next episode is my favourite one in the whole series! I am excited for it!!

Geneva The Weeba

The rollercoaster of emotions at the end of this episode Crying because Hiro's curse broke and the first thing he did was hug his sister That drop in your gut when Kureno gets stabbed Laughing at Goodwin's reaction to Kureno getting stabbed, because you've waited all this time Seeing Goodwin's ring when he covered his mouth and getting thrown out of the story altogether because your mind's running wild Then the dead sparrow and Uo watching it

Liliana Jimenez

"The zodiac war was supposed to be fun" *Laugh of disbelief* "this is pain" I cackled at this lol ^^ this was basically my reaction when I first read the manga as a young child, went in for cute family of zodiac animals and gets familial trauma and pain instead

Brimmy

Lmao yeah became a horror anime \so fast\ XD Oh? hi hello whose voicing Akira?...Chad Cline...Oh good finally a full list geez, no wonder he sounded familiar he voiced Akito in the original anime XD OH SHIGURE THAT SOUNDED SO MUCH MORE SASSY IN ENGLISH hehehehehe k so check it: us anime onlyies(onlies?) for AOT I'm sure a lot of us thought there was something grand and amazing in the basement some uber secret not history books so essentially the basement was empty just like that box and i just can't stop thinking about it "what's in the basement? Fucking nothing" idk 24:40??? I'm a curious person i never realize that googling specific shit will spoil me on anything so i just wanted to know if the zodiac spirit has to wait for their original host to pass away before being reborn and that's how i got spoiled that this was gonna happen XD also alex that face omg XD oh? sir is that a ring? promise or engagement? ooooooo hehehe (I've not been watching the mha vids so idk if u've said anything about it in them or not but congratz either way :3 ) YES TOHRU TELL KYO TELL HIM FLGBDFJGBKJDSFGBKJDSFBGKJSDHG

agoodwintv

It's a huge dilemma. I think Akito's question is kind of perfect: "How do I ask when I don't know what to ask?" How do we reconcile the fact that we're all a product of our environments with the idea of personal responsibility? Where is the line where circumstance ends and choice begins? It's really tough

agoodwintv

Whoops I forgot to mention that, sorry. I'm gonna post TYE but it's taking me a while.

agoodwintv

Haha it's a "couple ring" :D They're big in Korea. I still think about the basement sometimes and how we did all that to find... books (that Eren can't read)

This is why I dislike Akira as much as Ren. At least, she was honnest with her hate towards her daughter. Akira never moved Akito for who she is. She was just a set up, the chosen child, the proof he and Ren were special... Of course they are perfect for one another. They's just twisted, mostly because of their situations. The important thing is ren didn't want money or anything related to the Soma. She just wanted to live with Akira as they pleased. And I can feel sympathy for her : that's a woman that didn't get a say in her weel being. She clearly didn't want to have a child, but everyone around pressed her to give birth to Akito. She couldn't love her that way. I think there is a difference between responsability and understanding. For me, Akito is responsible for all her tantrum, resulting in hurting so many people mentaly and physically. But it's important to understand why she came to this extrems. That was her safety measures, the only way she could survive. She was taugh that everyone depended on her, and no one stopped. You don't expect a child to behave when you never give them limits. That's called education. She made the choices, and she has to pay for it. But that kind of punition could be good for her ? It's not about revenge, it's about changing. You don't put someone in a prison, treat them like non-human being, and expect them to act as good people when and if they come out. Akito needs therapy, and there's only one person she could begin with. Because Kureno was being an idiot here. It's too easy to ask someone to change when you're part of the reason they didn't until then. Akito is at the most vulnerable now, and words like that can't get to her. Why would she believe in kureno when he already lied to her face ? She needs something else. To spoke to someone who can understand her. Where do all the zodiacs go when they need comfort ? Because Tohru is the same, clinging to an inanimate object because she can't let go of her deceased one. It could have gone a very bad way if the Soma never found her. Because she was allowed to grief and grow from her experriences, thanks to the people she met. Akito didn't had that luxury, because Shigure, for how much he cares about her, isn't sensitive enough. That's why you can expect to heal just with the people you already know. Talking to a complete stranger can help wonders. Because they won't judge you. Because your version of the story is the important one. The one that truly matter in the end. I just want to add that the start of this episode makes 0 sense with when we left off. The pacing of these 3 episodes, counting episode 9, just don't match for me, and it's too bad.

Athena

The amount of shocking faces you made this episode made me crack up😂

I just realized something i shouldve known sooner. Unrelated to this episode, i now understand why the show is called fruits basket. Remember the episode when little tohru was called a rice ball in a room of fruits? She was never called on when they played fruits basket, so she was always left out. It parallels to Kyo; the cat zodiac is the odd one out — neglected. The show is called Fruits Basket bc the zodiac curse is the real life version of the game tohru experienced. This also shows how similar Kyo and Tohru are.

Nothing to add besides great reaction, it was just how I experience it. From "!!!!" to "!!!!" like whiplash lolol

I wanted to watch this tonight before bed but I'm just dead tired ;-; so I'm going to sleep instead and I'll submit a formal thesis on the episode tomorrow lmao

I’m going to leave this reply shorter so I have energy for a longer one on the new episode. But the most important thing I wanted to say is that I feel like a lot of people say Ren truly loved Akita, and maybe that’s true to an extent. But, honestly, regardless of how much she ‘loved’ him it’s warped and twisted. What I think is interesting, though, is that it could also just as easily be entitlement or a sense of wanting or feeling like she deserved more and then subconsciously attaching that to someone or something that can get her those things. A lot of people think she used Akita for his money, and maybe that’s also true but does it have to be a conscious malevolent decision to be true? I don’t think she would have so immediately seized that opportunity if at least some small part of it wasn’t a recognition of the things she would get out of it. And maybe in her head that became true love for Akita because it was also a true love for Akita’s things. It makes sense that her love would only become more obsessive after his death to me, because in this delusion she had Akita was firmly attached to her desires, and now she has lost everything she gained from her relationship with him when she lost him. She craves Akita because she would get back everything she wants, not just Akita. The interesting thing about Ren though is I think *she* thinks that she truly loved Akita. That what they shared was an unbreakable bond - eternal and unchanging. She mentally destroyed her own child because her child posed a threat to her way of life - despite the fact that she in part (presumably) offered to be with Akita to give him an heir. In conclusion, she’s a mentally ill, abusive, narcissistic opportunist who I doubt is even aware of how depraved and monstrous she has become. In her world she is the hero of her story, and that doesn’t leave room for Akito’s success or wellbeing in it, and it never has. But I do sort of like that we don’t fully understand Ren at this point, and that they don’t seem to be trying for redemption with her.

agoodwintv

Romantic relationships are so ridiculously tricky it's hard to know where one thing begins and the next ends. Regard for the other person, sexual desire, personal need, obsession... such thin lines between all of it.

I am totally loving your reactions and thoughts on this episode! This show is a masterpiece because it shows how much people are so flawed and in Akito it’s very much like I understand you and you were not responsible for the environment you grow up in but you are responsible for the pain you do inflict on others. Also everyone really thought the old maid was in the wrong but I just thought that she did the same as Tohru’s grandpa since they saw a child withering and gave them something to hold on to. Also Kyo stop!!! I may have watched the next episode like 100x but I’m still not ready for this talk!!!

BirthdayParty

I kinda disagree? Tohru's fear was a quite real and immediate danger. Kyoko could've followed Katsuya and abandoned Tohru. There's no accepting or moving on from that. On the other hand, Akito's fear was the realization that Akira might have loved Ren more than he did her. That's not something that endangers her, and she could've learned to accept and move on from that fact. After all, unlike Tohru, Akito did have a somewhat stable support system around her even if it was hollow. But instead of letting Akito learn to move on from that, the head maid instead convinces Akito to deny that reality via a hollow deception. Meaning Akito can't grow or move on from that realization, which causes Akito's insecurities to only grow even worse. Also, I can't help but feel like the head maid's actions were more out of her dislike for Ren and her desire for Akito to become the head of the family than out of any genuine concern for Akito's wellbeing. Why else does she look so guilty and claim that Akito never believed that the box had Akira's soul when Akito reveals that the box is empty if she did genuinely care for Akito?
