Unrelated to this episode, but it must be said that Mob Psycho season 3 was announced today and it's a historic day

raesh

Oh god the YEET !! Why anime! Why??? She wasn't supposed to fall that far...😭😭

Francesca White

it's not as clear in the English translation, but it's HEAVILY implied that if Tohru hadn't come back for Kyo, he would've ended his life :(

Francesca White

this is one of my favorite episodes of season 1 if not my favorite, the writing is just so great '

raesh

Also important thing this is the first time kyo calls tohru by her name...if u ever rewatch S1 u wld notice he never calls her by her name..its always hey or oi...

Sage

I really like how fruits basket doesn't try to turn the zodiac curse into a gift. I feel like too often people will look at any bad things and spin it to "it's actually a blessing." And while that sounds nice it downplays all the horrible trauma that's happened because of those things. Instead it teaches how we acknowledge bad things and work past them together.

Your description of this episode is hilarious 😂

Megan

“If you need talk, I’ll listen. If you need to be selfish, I’ll let you. I wanna help you the way you’ve helped me. If you’re feeling hurt, or scared, or weak I want you to tell me so I can face it with you.” That’s definitely one of my favorite Tohru quotes and stands out to me. It also parallels what Kyo told Tohru last episode when she was sick.

Megan

I feel EXTREMELY dumb for not noticing this, epically because this is my third time watching season 1 now

ArmdVctr

Alex in this show hugs trump kisses. Why do you think the characters are not given the ability to hug?

Such a fantastic episode! Your charizard comment is so on point, ha ha! I really love the fact that Tohru doesn't try to hide her fear of Kyo and his situation in that moment. And, like you said, her choice to go back for him was pivotal for both of them. Kyo's only ever had people pretend nothing was wrong, or that he was a monster, but he really just needed someone to acknowledge his reality and love him anyway. Tohru is Jesus, confirmed, lol.

Crystalrose

This was like a deeply emotional episode but i was kind of cracking up throughout this whole video lmaoo especially when you said he looked like charizard 😭But my favorite part of this whole episode is when Kyo says Tohru's name for the first time.. he can finally start opening up now that he truly feels safe.

raesh

Yes! So true..only in fruba I am more excited to get hugs rather than kisses... Since a hug wld reveal their curse...so for zodiacs to voluntarily hug a person of another gender implies a lot of trust

ArmdVctr

Definitely a game changer episode.

I love how well done the psychology of the characters are done in this whole show in general, but I especially really like Kyo (because I relate to him more than I care to admit). What he did to Tohru (though this was much worse than the manga), is something that’s hard to swallow as an audience member. But even if we can’t condone it or even forgive it, I feel like most people can understand it. In that moment, he is that hurting child being ‘threatened’ with love, and with love having been weaponized against him with Akito and turned into Toxic Positivity with his mother, he feels backed into a corner. He’s never heard or seen the health version of that love, and at this point if Tohru would have said the same things it likely would have broken him. So, like any small and hurt being backed into a corner he lashes out to avoid properly facing what’s coming at him. Because to him, her hating him seemed like it hurt less than her saying the exact same things his mother did. Tohru is an amazing character and handled this so well especially considering everything that happened. She really is just a salve personified to help these traumatized characters figure things out and find love again.

I have to say that watching this show with you and everyone else here is really helping me get deeper into it. This episode in particular was a really good one to rewatch here, as I really enjoyed your commentary and thoughts on the balance I have to strike between self-protection from past (and future) trauma and not letting myself spiral into isolation and preemptive doubt. Thanks for your reactions and to everyone else here who comments, it's been an enjoyable ride so far. I'm currently on S2 E9, and I'm looking forward to seeing the rest of the show.

I remember watching the original 2001 version of this and crying, and now the new one made me cry harder goddammit. I really appreciate the commentary as I strongly resonated with it this episode. Can't wait for the next one

Athena

Dear kami-sama, this finale hits hard. I'm currently sobbing. Actually surprised it got you, too!

Athena

I know right? I love reading everyone's further analysis and comments on each episode

This is still one of my favorite episodes in the whole series. I always cry when Tohru is trying to convince Kyo to come back home, and to keep living. ❤️

benj

Kagure continues LOL. The ship is real.

Nick

Alright, having now seen this episode and the finale... just wow. I'm holding off on watching this video until tomorrow so I can watch both in a row, but these two final episodes are phenomenal

Nick

The OST in this show is also one of the best I have ever heard. I've been listening to the theme and alternate version of it on repeat, as well as Spring Will Come When the Snow Melts Away (and the alt version]

Brimmy

I'm late but check it this shit was so vague and they made the reveal seem like it would be a terrifying thing in the original and hell i guess even in this one but when it happened it/he wasn't scary it was just a \oh wow that's a thing that happened\ I've seen this so many times but good god the build up constantly gives me a \oh shit what's gonna happen\ feeling its so good! "He's a cool cat demon thing, this isn't a big deal" RIGHT?! they make it out to be like some kind of horrific thing but its like, not maybe for those who aren't into these kinds of things its terrifying but like idk its heckin' cool god damn it Tohru u and ur fucking feels UGHHH ;-;

agoodwintv

Yeah it really felt to me like the whole thing hinged on Tohru. If she had just disappeared at that moment it's hard to see Kyo recovering that. But by forgiving him it immediately became possible to turn things around.

agoodwintv

One of the most convincing parts of it for me is the smell. That's really difficult to stomach and I can see people having a visceral reaction to that. The rest is sort of cool, although that's probably easier to say in a show where we know there are supernatural events lol

Derrick C. Shields

Kyo: "Oh, no. She saw me" "Tohru doesn't give a crap!" Tohru: "I do give a crap. This form scares me." Eatin' those words. Every time.
