i love how this show can make Kyoko, a character who's been dead the entire series, one of the best characters

Francesca White

Uotani going on to help these little gang kids the same way Kyoko helped her is just so great <3

And the onion ninjas strike again

AAAAND now I'm teary eyed lol I just love the fact that Tohru and Kyoko were so accepting and welcoming to Uo-chan and Hana-chan. Uo was looking for some sort of belonging and family within her gang but it really wasn't what she needed. Also, an important fact we got this episode was Tohru's way of speaking. In the sub Tohru speaks very formal Japanese, which I feel doesn't really translate well in English.

Your Fruits Basket reactions always make my day. Thank you:D

Francesca White

in the original Japanese, Tohru speaks a dialect called "keigo", which is SUPER polite and formal. this is why it makes more sense in the original that Tohru speaks formally and that she got it from her father. another character who speaks keigo in the show is the Yuki Fan Club president lol

This is one of my favorite episodes in the entire show full stop. Seriously amazing stuff here, too drunk right now to say anything of meaning, not that I do that anyways. Thank you for the 150,000th time for reacting to this highly impactive and emotional show.

Really enjoyed this one. I felt like you would really connect with Uotani's backstory and I wasn't disappointed.

Hanajima has a great backstory too.

Also the Jesus comparisons with Tohru are apt. She tends to save people at their lowest and accepts people who are treated as outcasts.

Damn.. when Uotani says " I don't learn anything till I get hurt." Really resonated with that, and felt called out at the same time lol

Uotani and those girls in her past (and Kyoko) were part of the yankii/yankee subculture (popular in the 80s/90s), which technically involves "gangs", but it's more like groups of delinquents who hang out together because they're friends and have similar backgrounds like dysfunctional families/rough lives. The "yankee" origin of the name can be traced back to rock and roll, and the themes of punkish rebelling against society are very similar. It's limited to middle and high school, and while they talk big, at most they only commit petty crimes or beat each other up. After they graduate or drop out, they move on to get normal jobs as regular members of society (but still maintain close bonds with each other). They also have a specific fashion style (well-exemplified by the three delinquent girls), with bleached hair, long coats with large text (seen in the after-credits scene), face masks, and long skirts. Uotani still follows this fashion style, which is why Kyo and others often call her a yankii/delinquent. It's also why the girls in this episode say "look who's talking" when Uotani calls them "outdated delinquents". Yankii aren't common these days, though they do still exist, with slight fashion adjustments here and there over the years.

Thanks this was a great read, I always liked the focus on real Japanese culture in this show and the exploration of some not so good social groups like these ones.

I'm late catching up on this so haven't seen the video yet, but thoughts after finishing the episode itself: Tohru's mom is the GOAT. With extra emphasis. And the muffin analogy for Tohru and Uotani is both a little silly and also extremely sweet and endearing. You can tell how much it meant to Uotani that Tohru made an extra muffin for her

Nick

also nice that Kyoko was almost like a mother figure to Uotani.

lol I'm coming back to comment about the gang related stuff after watching Tokyo Revengers and my god this does not even COME CLOSE to the gang ish that goes down in that show
