In Fruits Basket 1x12 You Look Like You're Having Fun, Momoji schemes his way into Tohru's drug-riddled social circle,  Akito makes up for being the world's biggest crybaby by being sexy as hell, and the gang either lives out a deep metaphor or simply plays badminton I don't know.

Fruits Basket long and contemplative comment 6: As soon as I saw the limousine roll up at the start, I was instantly filled with dread knowing it was Akito. What a way to make your audience fear someone, without giving them much screentime 12 episodes in. Akito is this extremely terrifying figure who just exudes a dark energy whenever he’s around. The whole interaction with Tohru and Yuki was so sinister and disturbing. But one thing I really loved is that the show gave us some levity at the end to draw away from that, with Tohru wanting to cheer Yuki up and distract him. But my god, I can already tell Akito is going to piss me off. Also finding it harder to like Shigure right now, because if he knew Yuki was suffering in that dark room, why didn’t he help him? We know Shigure supposedly cares about Akito, but there are mixed messages because he also previously said he wanted Akito to reap what he sowed. Is Shigure manipulating Akito, while Akito is attempting to manipulate Shigure/Yuki??? I am so confused and intrigued. And terrified. I only know I can trust Yuki, Kyo and Tohru. Used to think Shigure was trustworthy too. I’ll have to see how things play out. I also still really strongly think Akito is the snake, but maybe he’s the tiger or goat? I’m saying goat because in the ED the goat has a kind of… pessimistic look, if that makes sense, next to the tiger. Still not sure. I know one thing though, this show has not terrified me this much until now.

Francesca White

the guys at the beginning called Tohru an airhead and said they liked that cuz smart girls are hard to handle, so basically they were planning on taking advantage of Tohru, Kyo was actually pretty justified in protecting her there which is good, i hate anime where the guys is overly protective to the point where it's unhealthy

agoodwintv

LMAO I legit thought the episode was gonna be about the class rep at first and that that was his entrance. But obviously happier with Akito. My theory is that you are right about Akito being the snake. What started out as a joke about Tohru being girl Jesus has led to a full-blown conspiracy theory, speaking of tin hats, about how many parallels there might end up being. - Tohru is the "traveler," someone who will sacrifice their own life gladly for the sake of others. - Twelve animals and twelve disciples. I don't know much about it but I think there was a 13th disciple that replaced Judas, much like there is a 13th animal (Kyo) who might replace someone someday. - In this episode, Akito (perhaps accidentally perhaps not) tempts Tohru into doing something very un-Jesus like when she shoves him away. Perhaps he is also a devil-like, temptation type figure, and in that case wouldn't the snake make a lot of sense?

Francesca White

love Akito's first true appearance here, the fear he strikes in Yuki is so sad, and we get the first glimpses into Yuki's backstory

Fabiola Macias

I very much appreciate how much you seemed to appreciate Akito’s looks

Brimmy

One of the best episodes I love that they kept in Haru showing the president that his hair color was natural and even more so I LOVE THAT YOU CAUGHT ON AS SOON AS IT WAS HAPPENING XD "Even for me Akito is attractive" ahh...well....that'll be explained later in the series o.o Did u see Kyo's eye were different when he was glaring at Akito? its much much worse than just a dark room also i had a brain blast when u said badminton there's an anime centered around it called Hanebado! its alright not the best anime but it exists :3

Megan

I don’t if you noticed it but there’s a very distinct and sinister melody every time Akito shows up. It’s one of my favorite things about the Fruits Baskets sound track. It really helps create tension. Also we do eventually get more information about uotani’s drug fill youth in future episode.

Crystalrose

you laughing at ur own glass joke made me laugh so hard.... thank you for that

Francesca White

watching back this episode now it's crazy how much foreshadowing there is, there's like end game stuff in here, this is the type of story that you can definitely tell was planned out from the beginning (in fact, one of the very last scenes of the story was the first scene the author ever wrote, and she wrote the story and many of the themes to tie back into that scene)

Francesca White

all the best villains have a very distinct theme: Akito, Azula, All For One, etc

Jerry Ferrell

Hanajima’s explanation of badminton did make me think. She said it was about both sides giving all their strength and it made me think of a line from a Korean show I watched a while back. “Love is the easiest thing in the world. You give everything you have and receive everything they give you.” Might be a bit of a stretch but if relationships are like badminton, if you’re seeing both sides of the net, then the volley is the goal. Two different competitors whose efforts work in conjunction to create an amazing match. Likewise, if you only see your own side of the field, you’re desperately fighting against the other person, not seeing their perspective, creating conflict where there might not have been any before.

raesh

Akito is here!! Time to bring out the salt...to banish Evil!!!!😤😤😤

JDalsing

i wish akito was subs, and ngl, momiji needs to be subs soon. the japanese voice has so much more impact when his backstory comes in. nothing against dubs, but momiji in subs is much more impactful

agoodwintv

Thinking about it more what makes it even funnier is that the president is like, "yeah I definitely gotta see this for myself" and walks himself into the bathroom. The guy is committed

agoodwintv

Without knowing what it is exactly I can feel the weight of it in the scene

agoodwintv

Despite my jokes about destroying my girlfriend in badminton, the best possible feeling is getting a mutual flow going through a nice volley

Athena

Akito uses glass! It's very effective...and leaves emotional, physical, and mental scars

Derrick C. Shields

I know there's probably good thematic reasons for Akito to show up during the first day of school, but at the same time, it feels very deliberate to have that scene with Akito and Yuki take place during the middle of the day. Instead of, say, contriving a meeting between the two of them during the night - like when Yuki goes to walk Tohru home from work. When I watched this anime, I had already seen the Studio Deen version (which neuters this scene and completely ditches the "healing badminton match" IIRC) and read the manga and that scene still scared the Hell out of me. And it takes place in broad daylight, which again, feels deliberate.

Brimmy

The wiki says they played badminton in ep 13 of the OG and they did its just animated better in the remake XD

Brimmy

In replying to Derrick C. Shields's comment i literally went and watched ep 13 of the original anime and my face H U R T S its so precious and funny and fact paced huh they had a guy voice Akito in the original but a lady in the remake? interesting

benj

“Akito makes up for being the world’s biggest crybaby by being sexy as hell” Easily your best video description yet, and that’s saying something. I’m fuckin dead bro💀😂, just like how you’ll be dead if you say something like that too Akito as he will throw glass at your head, and don’t forget…its all your fault.

Eric Gilreath

Akito = Hannibal Lecter, but the cannibalism is emotional.

jdthebud

Yeah, that scene with Akito was the most tense scene so far. I really liked how you explained the appeal and formidability of his presence. Also, your reaction to him being handsome reminds me of your reaction to first seeing Ozai in ATLA.

Nick

I just didn't expect it so it I was laughing for like five minutes. I'm imagining Reigen from Mob Psycho where they announce the special salt moves, but it's Akito and it's like "Glass Punch! This is one of Akito's special moves, where he taunts his enemy, before breaking a bottle and shoving shards of glass in his enemies face with vigor!"

JDalsing

can we do dubs for at least episode 16-18? in need some development without the awful accent. please!! im fine with dubs afterwards but some episodes need subs especially momiji's 16-18

JDalsing

also dubs are the worst adaptation. you dont get the real feeling. you can getn some of it ft=rp=om dubs, but not rALLY, ITS NOT THE SAME IN FRUITS BASKET

JDalsing

MHA DOESN'T MATTER, THE DUB IS GOOD, BUT Fruits basket has amazing voice acting in the orriginal japanese

Francesca White

Dude, you should chill out. The dub is really good even if there's some rough spots, and it's a lot easier for him to do dub than sub :)

BotheredAsh

So now that we've heard more than a couple lines, Akito is voiced by Colleen Clinkenbeard who also plays Yaoyorozu Momo in MHA and Riza Hawkeye in FMAB (and FMA). Colleen is also one of the voice directors for the MHA dub.

Love that you understood the bathroom scene right away! I first read the fruits basket manga when I was a kid and for the longest time I hadn't understood how Haru proved it was his real hair color haha

RyanKat

GLASS!! xD

benj

its a lost cause at this point chief, me and many others have tried to convince him but he has made it clear it is much easier for him in the video making process to watch dubs, which really really sucks and I hope he can change his production setup somehow in order to make it easier to put out sub reactions cause I completely agree. This dub is just not the same show, it really does effect everything fundamentally, you just gotta try and get used to it. It would really suck if future shows continue to get ruined on this incredible reaction channel just because its easier for him to make dub reaction content, Americanized parodies of Japanese shows just ain't it for me man.

benj

im not a girl and that scene made me wanna get with kyo lmao, some of the dudes in this show really be making me question my sexuality sometimes LOL

Anonymous

No Momiji, you're not cute with that horrible voice Sorry, I had to say it

benj

Momiji's real voice actor does such an amazing job too, its one of my fav voices in all of anime its sooooo cute

Anonymous

oh i knew i recognized Dark Haru's VA its the same as Kirishima's from MHA

benj

Ok this dub Student Council president voice actor is AMAZING. I couldn't stop laughing listening to this guy lmao.

agoodwintv

For reasons I can't explain I think that humor is one of the few things that often comes across better in dubs, maybe because it's a more direct pathway to your brain in your native language.

Nick

@A Goodwin TV I kind of agree. Hearing someone like Iida for example freak out in English over proper class etiquette sometimes hits me harder because I'm not reading subtitles. This is also why I think comedy anime works well in dubs. Like Konosuba for example has such a good dub because the actors were allowed to go off the rails Comedy is great, drama is very hit or miss

benj

@Nick Have you watched Konosuba in sub? The sub voice actors are honestly legendary, Megumin has one of the best japanese voices ive ever heard.....EXPLOSIONNNNN!!! lmao I watch everything in sub with the exception of MHA. I agree Comedy can be done as well as it is in sub for the reasons Goodwin said, but sometimes the comedy isnt as good as sub and everything else is dramatically worse. I haven't actually heard the Konosuba dub so I might have to check out a couple scenes.

Nick

@benj To sum it up for you, the dub is so good because the cast is on par with the subs and the dialogue maintains that extremely ridiculous appeal. I have a clip that sums it up. I think they improvised a bit too. This clip has some moments from season 1 just watch the full thing trust me lol https://youtu.be/GnhUDA7J5b0

Nick

Also I have seen it in subs and dubs. I'm currently watching it through dubs but plan on rewatching it fully in subs :). Both are fantastic imho

Nick

OH SHIT I forgot do not watch that video without headphones. Because... well, it's Konosuba. Duh. It's only like a minute long but still Sorry for all the notifications

benj

@Nick LMFAO thanks for linking the vid im currently dying of laughter watching it holy shit. God I love Konosuba, gonna have to rewatch it sometime soon. So you're watching it for the first time right now? Let me know what you think when you finish the show and movie, imo it keeps getting better and better and the movie is the best part of it all along with the S2 finale. "WHAT SHOULD I DO KAZUMA....still don't know" LOOOL yeah this dub sounds pretty great, I'm just a sub guy through and through so ill never watch the full show in dub.

Nick

@benj I'm almost done with season 2 currently, but it's lower on my priorities just because of so many other shows and life stuff. I am super pumped for season 3 though. I usually limit myself to a few shows at a time so I can handle it. Right now it's Psycho Pass 2, MHA, Fruits Basket. Also yeah I totally get being a subtitle person. Konosuba's dub is probably the closest I've ever seen an anime to matching its original audio in feel. Same with FMAB and a few others

benj

@Nick Yeah makes sense I also limit myself to only two shows at a time along with a weekly premiering anime or two, so right now I'm watching Cowboy Bepop in dub because along with FMAB its probably the only two shows ever to have a better dub than sub, and The Melancholy of Harui Suzumiya with My Hero Academia Season 5 coming out with one episode a week for the last couple months. I highly recommend Harui Suzumiya as a replacement for Konosuba when you finish it as they are both iconic comedies, also Harui was made by Kyoto Animation and is one of there flagship shows, they are by far my favorite studio in all of Japan.

Nick

Funny you say that because I literally googled the melancholy of Harui yesterday, it's on my radar. I don't have a streaming service for it though so I'll probably head over to ye olde 9anime That's definitely on my list though. Kyoto is also one of my favorites, simply from Violet Evergarden alone

benj

@Nick Violet Evergarden is a true 10/10, so is Hyouka and Hibike! Euphonium. If you have any interest in band/instrument stuff I cannot stress enough how spectacular Hibike! is, it is my favorite TV show OF ALL TIME, only finished it for the first time a couple months ago but no piece of media has ever moved me more than Hibike, the show itself has motivated me to make serious improvements in my own life just in the last couple months. Its the most realistic portrayal of teenage life I have ever seen in any media, every character is truly real and nothing is played up for semantics or entertainment, it is a brutally honest portrayal of youth and self improvement.

crow pancake

"See you guys next time for the drug OVA" LMAO i lost it
