this episode is basically considered "The Great Divide" of Fruits Basket lol

Long fruits basket comment #2: (people seemed to dislike this episode but I didn't mind too much!) It seems to me like Kagura is more fixated on being with a member of the zodiac maybe because she's afraid of loneliness. She makes a note to mention how it would be better in many ways, as they can understand each other and even hug without turning into animals. So to me it seems kinda like she is fantasizing over Kyo for that reason. Even though she knows it's not reciprocal, she's stuck in a loop. The concept of getting together with Kyo is probably a lifeline for insecurities/fear of being alone as a zodiac. I think she also has genuine concern and care for Kyo, but some of it seems driven by a fear or something of that nature. There's something extra. I think Kyo's goals are also somewhat similar, even if he doesn't realize it. He goes training because he wants to be officially welcomed in the zodiac/clan. But I would wager the reason he's truly after that is he doesn't want to be excluded. To be alone. Maybe in some ways, if my theorizing is right, he and Kagura aren't too different. Beating Yuki in their rivalry is just as much of a lifeline for Kyo. Also, while it's not healthy for Kagura to beat the shit out of Kyo, considering he loves martial arts, part of me wonders if that could be something they could bond on in a platonic way. She is clearly very good at kicking his ass. Side note: I am now watching Fruits Basket, Remake Our Life, Mob Psycho 100 season 2, To Your Eternity and Somali and the Forest Spirit. All of these coupled together I feel like it's going to emotionally wreck me hah

To expand on this, I think her obsession with Kyo might be more of a deeply psychological thing than it is just weird admiration and attraction. I have no idea if any of this was talked on in today's commentary since I wrote most of this comment directly after watching the episode

I didn’t realize you were reacting to Fruits Basket today but I’m very happy you are!

I'm not a fan of "this Kagura" because her attention is a bit much for me. I'm more chill. I've also been the object of someone's intense affection/obsession and it did not end well. She gets a pass because she's a girl but if genders were reversed.. this is a NO. All I can say is keep watching. Your commentary is why I'm here.

Athena

I understand how people could not like Kagura, but like Tohru, I love her passion and her ability to find the good things within the person she loves.

I love this episode and Kagura's introduction. If this is the "worst" episode of the entire show it should be pretty telling as to the quality of whats to come. Gonna be interesting to see what Kagura thinks in future episodes about Tohru and Kyo's dynamic especially if it continues to get more/less romantic. I am also rooting for Kagura here for sure, I would love to see Kyo just give 1% of the admiration she shows to him back to her.

Brimmy

Kagura gets better...its fine....sorta...kinda...not really... see i say this but i love her cuz she's just outrageous and every time she's violent it just makes me laugh them on the roof god i love them and whoever keeps drawing kyo like that needs a fricken raise or something everything i wanna say is a spoiler pppffff

benj

lmao same, Its so freaking hard not to spoil shit. especially when his analysis is so good.

I totally understand what you're saying about Kagura's split personality and how real it can be. My dad was diagnosed with Disassociative Identity Disorder as well as Bipolar Disorder from childhood trauma. It can give you some serious whiplash to just finish shouting and arguing only to see him later and hes cracking a joke and asking if you want to do something fun.

I'm new to fruits basket, but I enjoyed this episode! It just seemed to me there was a story behind Kagura and why she's like this, and it made me want to learn more. I liked the reaction because I possibly am a little too much like Kyo when it comes to overly clingy people, and it's good to look at a variety of perspectives in those situations. I feel like I'm either rude in ways I don't realize or I avoid them or I'm like fake towards them, all of which isn't the best really.

ArmdVctr

Ah man next episode is gonna be great!

Sean Silence

I know I'm a minority, but I find Kagura hilarious. I know that is a very surface level way of looking at her character, but there it is.

benj

Totally agree. I think the whole "She only gets a pass cause shes a girl" thing is super overblown, its just anime slapstick comedy. Her character is awesome and hilarious.

My ex was like Kagura, and while the highs are pretty good, there were times where she'd slap me or throw things at me and forget about it and it was concerning. Eventually she threatened to cut me and that's when I had to cut things off. It was cute at first cause she was almost a foot shorter than me, but it can also be emotionally draining.
