Yet another episode where Aizawa shines! He's always using these trials as teaching opportunities, calling out Todoroki's lack of awareness and trying to give Momo the opportunity to gain confidence back. I think he did let himself get caught in the end. Although "going easy" is not always the best strategy, I think he recognized in this situation that Momo had already put in the effort and is giving her all to overcome her past doubts. Taking away the positive achievements due to a small misstep would be less beneficial in this instance. But I can see this being a mixed bag, so I'd love to hear others' interpretation of Aizawa's actions.

I miss the MN shirt.

I'm still thinking about this. The show seems to suggest through recovery girl that he actually did take a dive, at least to SOME extent, but Aizawa himself denies it. Although he would deny it if his goal was to boost Momo's confidence. Hmmmm

Kollie123

Obligatory “you missed an after credits scene” comment, very good episode though. The fact that todoroki voted for her all those episodes ago was a great touch

The brilliance of Aizawa's merciful throw here is that he did it for the right reason. Momo's execution failed on the first attempt, but she quickly corrected and demonstrated that her strategy was sound. Aizawa could have punished the mistake, but what would that do for her as a student? Drive her further into her spiral? So no, he let her take the mostly deserved victory because that's what she needs to get back on track.

No one is cheating in that class. One clone for every student.

This is one of my favorite episodes of the season. I think they did a great job of depicting the spiral that is self doubt, and it's magnified by how obviously powerful and talented Momo is. Regardless of how well you're doing in life, one failure or slip up can do a lot of damage just because of how hard it is to deal with mentally. It's also realistic that she didn't figure it out on her own. Like without a teacher who cares like Aizawa or a friend like Todoroki, she could've easily spiraled further. Support systems make a huge difference in life's outcomes

Yeah it is very difficult, maybe Iroh-like, to pull oneself out of that state. Because when you are in that state, it's not like just your emotions are compromised, EVERYTHING is compromised including your thinking, so where do you find a solid foundation to build up from? Good people is one of the best ways.

Always love this episode. Tons of episodes to go that I still love throughout this entire show but this one always stuck with me.

NitrousOxide19

i think you should watch the movie after season 3. even though its cronologically before season 3, theres some spoilers for season 3 within it (it was released near the end of season 3)!

NitrousOxide19

also i love how the strongest student at the sports festival, shoto, is still weaker than the home room teacher. i think its always healthy when there is somewhat of a power balance when teaching (although it can be abused).

One more episode, one more opportunity for Aizawa to show me how far I still have to go as a teacher. The way Tsu can acknowledge her feelings and despite what they are can make great decisions based in what she reads of the situation is just inspiring and amazing to see. Great ability to have. Goals.

I wonder if part of Momo's confidence issues was also from her internship. Like the hero she interned with seemed to mostly invited her based aesthetic reasons and not on the merit of her skills.

Brimmy

TsuiXTokoyami as a ship yes please the fanart of them is ADORABLE sorry that's the only thing i can think of for this episode XD Cuz my spam spazz for this was \yes it was very impressive go momo!\ and \das hot no pun intended\ cuz what else is the fangirl gonna say lmao XD

Aura Y

I think you make a very good point. I think the internship definitely contributed to the spiral. After the sports festival, she started to doubt herself, and then when she thought she was given an opportunity to bounce back and learn from a mentor, she found herself doing something she found little value in. I think all the tiny things added up to her losing confidence in her decision making in combat, in choosing the right internship. But glad she's back on the right track (I'm sorry for the rambling!)

Recovery Girl confirming that Tsu is the best hero in Class A. We all knew it.

benj

Lol. Tsu is Overpowered as hell. Who thought “Frog” would be the ultimate quirk?

agoodwintv

Yeah I wanted a challenge but it would feel weird if the students were just way better than the teachers already. The weights and the 2 vs 1 parings were effective methods of finding that sweet spot. And it makes sense that the teachers would be so OP. They're class 1A but with at least a decade of real world experience.

agoodwintv

That's one of my favorite things about this show. Every episode I watch I feel like I reconnect with something I want for myself.

The extra nice thing about Aizawa's throw - at least, if you believe Aizawa thinks as fast as a JoJo character, which I do - is that his reasoning behind his attack plan was sound. Sure, he could have punished Momo, but Todoroki is still under the sheet, unerasable and in perfect "not too far, not too close" range to freeze Aizawa's legs to the ground like, twice over. BUT, all that would accomplish is make Momo think that once again, she needed to rely on Todoroki to do the heavy lifting, and knowing her catastrophizing mind, produce the nagging sense that they only won because of Aizawa's mistake, not careful planning. It seems like Aizawa recognized he was screwed either way, and actively chose the path that would regain Momo's self-confidence. Sure, Aizawa also could have just run away completely (though it seems like that's what he WAS doing), but that would just return things to relative neutral, and while it would give Aizawa time to recover, 1) since retreat is viable, time isn't necessarily on his side and 2) Momo seems like a good planner when she has confidence and social support; I believe she could have come up with another plan to best Aizawa.

Surprisingly great advice on dealing with anxiety, thank you. I typically procrastinate a lot, and I find that taking small steps earlier does help ease me into those things more. It alleviates a lot of anxiety and stress, knowing that you're not just sitting there doing nothing, like throwing yourself a pity party. It's productive, even if it's just a little.
