Styx TV

ComicalSkate

Who else has been anxiously waiting lol?

malikparah

Nice i was just about to give up and go to sleep. P.S next episode has a post credits scene

SirLagginton

MOBLIT NOOOOO. And so this was the time I lost one of my top 3 characters. Moblit was my second fav :(

Anonymous

i'm sure it was a ton of extra work to get all three of these out today so i just wanna say thank you and we all appreciate you!

Nick

And now you know why these three episodes are so highly rated, with Hero at the top lol So much happening

oragami53

ALEX!!!!!!!!!!! Now, this is a life of luxury!

Sean Carroll

What’s the truth????? Let’s go to the basement and find out once and for all the truth of this world

Chaz Finch

Man for so long I wondered why they didn't split the dose and save them both. Until I realized that the 2nd snack was gone.

Aura Y

There we go... the most painful episode of this 3-episode arc. I think this is honestly my favorite episode of the whole series. There's just so much emotional weight in every word spoken in this episode. Eren crying his heart out, Levi reaching for every possible hope of saving his close friend. The voice acting, the music, the writing all culminated into this masterpiece of an arc. May we give our hearts to Erwin one last time!

veryohno

For some reason, everytime I see Moblit's death and Hange looking up at him, it makes me tear up. It's one of the only moments that gets me 100 percent of the time.

Aura Y

Just curious, do you think watching these 3 episodes back-to-back affected the weight of it at all? Still amazing commentary and insight! Hope everyone appreciated/enjoyed these episodes as much as I did!

malikparah

There was a lot of talk when this episode aired about what Erwin and Armin's dreams represented symbolically. Erwin's was a dark, underground, constricting basement which ultimately has nowhere else to go with the way he frequently said he didn't know what he'd do if he achieved his dream. His mental state towards the end reminded me of a marathon runner whose only thought is to cross the finish line and when they do they just collapse. On the other hand the ocean typically symbolises freedom, new horizons, new experiences and has an air of endlessness to it. Also RIP Moblit been by Hange's side since s1 and died watching her back like always

NitrousOxide19

i just love how natural the conflict between the characters is in this show. it isn't forced and you understand all the perspectives so clearly. really really really great writing.

Brimmy

I've been vibrating the past hour waiting for this episode o.o I'm so glad u were stumped on who they'd use the titan juice on

R'Mani Leavell

This is my top 5 episode. The first time I ever shed a tear in this show was Armins "death" but this entire episode I was balling. When Eren ask Levi has he heard about the sea, I was done. But I do think Levi made the right choice. And I always felt like if Erwins dream came true, and he made it to the basement there would've been nothing left for him. Like a while back when you said that if Eren ever rid the world of the titans, he would never be as happy as he was while he was trying to reach his goal. And I love the part when Mikasa was pulled out her sword. She was ready to fight Levi and kill Floch. That reminded me of the scene in season 2 when she told Ymir she had no more room in her heart to lose anyone she cares about.

R'Mani Leavell

Its funny, when I first watched this show I didn't even notice Moblit let alone know is name. They I started watching people reactions and everyone comments on Moblit

mr_wordcraft

Rip Moblit, Rip Erwin, Rip Marlo, Rip each and every scout who fell to bring humanity to this point, their sacrifices brought a HUGE win for humanity, however it cost so much that there's no space for celebration, unfortunately.

R'Mani Leavell

I just thought, what if Levi split the dose into 2 and Eren gave up his life for Armin. Considering how much he cared for Armin, tied in with him realizing he wasn't special would've made for something amazing... Though I do think I would prefer what we got

meg

My favorite episode of the whole show!! For the titan syringe I don't think it would have mattered if they could split it up and save both because Bertholdt was the only intelligent tiant they could have Armin/Erwin eat because the Cart titan took Reiner, meaning one of them would have to be a mindless titan while the other got Bertholdt's powers. Also I was watching these episodes consecutively so I was just sobbing for like an hour and a half straight. I also just love the way Eren talks about Armin like how everything in his head is just hate but Armin is different or how the only person who can save humanity won't be him or Erwin but Armin. Those lines for some reason make me emotional every time I watch it. I don't know what it is about the writing but they just find the most heart wrenching things for their characters say.

Anonymous

Did you notice that there was no music this episode until the very end? It was so intense that I didn’t realize it the first time around

Anonymous

It should've been obvious Armin was going to be the Colossal Titan. Do you know how hard it would be to animate Erwin's massive balls on the Colossal Titan?

benj

LOL just loaded up Patreon for the first time tonight. I am overwhelmed ahhhhh!!! Soooo uh RIP tons of characters but mainly just Erwin. He'll never get to learn the truth he spent his whole life working towards, its so tragic. This show just had to royally fuck over my favorite character even in death, should've expected it tbh. Rest in Peace Erwin Smith you fucking legend, we will never forget your dreams.

Anonymous

I feel Levi didn't choose to save Armin but rather chose to let his friend rest. The voice acting especially in these last few episodes has been phenominal.

Anonymous

Man watching these 3 episodes again sent me in for a loop lol, even now I still manage to cry because of the emotions and all the interactions. Such a good trilogy

Xylen

I love how of these three episodes, with the first two being so action-packed and animated to high heaven, it's this one that skips the intro. Just a title card. This episode needed room to breathe and let the emotional weight sink in. They took every second to do it justice, and they damn well used them.

Nick

Update: I had never thought about the fact that every single character there is masking their emotions with logistics, even Floch because he wants Erwin to both lead humanity and suffer. I never appreciated Hange as much on my first watch as I do now. She's so great. And I love the way you rationalized the situation with Erwin and Armin. A lot of fans debate over who was the right choice, my answer is personally Armin, for the simple reason that Erwin seemed to be at peace and acceptance. But I can also recognize both arguments have validity. There isn't really a true right answer, at least morally speaking. It goes hand in hand with Levi's philosophy. You don't know what will happen, you just do what you can when it does happen. I also think there are parallels to be made between the conversation Armin and Levi had when Armin shot that woman that was going to kill Jean. Armin did what he thought was necessary in the moment, and he saved Jean's life. The flashbacks to Kenny talking about how everyone is a slave to something, or drunk to push on, it's so flawless like you said. In a way, characters are even slaves or drunk to this concrete idea of freedom too. And finally to end this long long comment, these three episodes have been insane. Your takes continue to make me view the story in a different lens.

meg

I also think that once Erwin got to the basement he would have less to fight for and it would have been better to have let him die having a fulfilling life chasing that dream. While Armin's dream is more abstract and isn't just the sea but exploring the outside world. He has more drive for even after his goal is reached.

Xylen

"mainly just Erwin"? Put some respect on my man Moblit's name. The true sacrifice this episode.

Nick

And there was barely any music until Levi made the decision

CastSenpai

Don't miss next episodes post credit scene :)

meg

Oh my goodness yeah I wasn't expecting that episode to come so soon. But yes!!! that ending is a big one.

Anonymous

That Mikasa voice acting though. So much pain from a character who is usually fairly reserved. Powerful stuff all around, but the anguish in Mikasa's voice is what gets to me the most about this episode.

QuillerKeen

amazing insight as always. There really is no "right" answer when it comes to saving one life over another, and I'm glad you got so much out of these three episodes. Side note, is that the sun arcana from Persona on your shirt?

Xylen

I love how when Mikasa draws her sword and it pans to her face, she's clearly still basically in shock. She's not angry or determined, she just seems scared and unsure. It just feels like a reflex, then she stands there shaking until Levi takes action.

War2244

So since you did three today, will the next upload still be two days from now?

Anonymous

I feel like Levi also realised that Erwin wouldnt be drunk on anything that would drive him forward after seeing the basement, but Armin was drunk on something that would drive him further. Assuming their value to the scouts was near equal, that dream of Armins might make him more valuable than an Erwin without a dream in the future.

Alex Begley

Levi's reflecting to Kenny's words helped him realize that by bringing Erwin back, he would take him away from his freedom of not being "drunk" on something. Erwin's revival either would have led to him becoming a prisoner to another pursuit or left him wandering around aimlessly without any. Erwin died fulfilling what he saw, in the end, as his true purpose. He had learned that he didn't need the basement to find happiness, he could find that in the moment he was in, however grim that sounds. He smiles because everything has become so simple for him in that moment. He wasn't wishing for another reality where he made it to the basement or complaining anymore about it, he merely just accepted that he was destined to die there, leaning into it by going out in a blaze of glory. There are some parallels with Kenny's death scene when Kenny decided to give in to death rather than continue his pursuit of power by injecting himself to become a Titan. That small little scene ended up having a big impact on Levi and this decision

Anonymous

One interesting thing to point out in the Armin vs Erwin thing is that every one of Erwins plans involved lots of death and sacrifice, while Armin only ever directly sacrificed himself

a. tree

I found it so funny how in Shadis’s episode, someone said that nobody had died in Erwin’s squad at all but then as SOON as he becomes commander his signature move becomes leading suicide charges

Jo

I know it's not the big thing this episode, but... Can we talk about the look of relief on Bertholdt's face when he's about to be eaten but then sees his "friends", his Scout comrades. Like he just forgot everything that had happened and honestly thought for a moment that they were going to save him. Then when that failed, calling out to his Warrior comrades, Reiner and Annie. I truly think he did consider all of them friends until the very end, and was simply acting on what was, in his mind, an absolute, something that just HAD to happen.

meg

I agree!! It also made me think of Levi's motivation and how much of a selfless character he is. I just noticed that Kenny said to Levi after telling him "everyone gets drunk on something to keep pushing on", and then asks Levi, "What are you then, a hero?" And it made me realize how much Levi gives up so that other people can realize their dreams or happiness.

meg

Despite the large amount of casualties he caused I still felt sad that he had no chance. He had no say or opportunity to discuss his fate because they already decided he wasn't going to live, similar to how Marco died.

Anonymous

One of the small details I love about this episode is that Hange was initially holding a fighting Mikasa back, but the hold she had on her turned from more of a choke hold into a hug as Mikasa calmed down and accepted the situation. Makes me tear up every time.

Keegan Brakhage

I think one of the most depressing things about this episode is how little Bertholt matters to anyone. He is just a "thing" to be eaten to save their friends lives. On two different occasions this season there was hesitation by Levi squad to finish off Reiner, but that's not even a consideration for Bertholdt in this episode. It makes sense but damn, his death is really sad in that way. Also don't work too hard man! love the triple post but we all had to watch the show weekly lol, it doesn't ruin the experience to segment it if you have to. I know there's a sequence of episodes in season 4 that are kinda in the same vein as this, but don't feel pressured to quadruple post those lol.

Jake White

The big difference between Armin and Erwin, and the reason Levi ended up choosing Armin at the end: is that Erwin’s dream would end the moment this battle ended, however things turned out. Regardless of whether he survived, as long as 1 scout survived the fight then they could reach the basement and fulfill his dream and after his 1 on 1 with Levi, he was content with that. Whereas Armin’s dreams are far grander in scale and continue far out beyond the walls. So he has the potential to lead them further than Erwin ever could; and Armin still had goals he wanted to achieve and represented the truest scout nature of wanting to explore and learn all about the world.

a. tree

That brings this arc to its conclusion, and SO MUCH has changed and turned around. Lots of victories, but also of heavy losses. Let's review: - The Survey Corps managed to defeat the Armored, Colossus, and Beast Titan (while also finding out about a new quadrupedal titan) and forced a retreat from Wall Maria. - Bertholdt Hoover, the former user of the Colossus Titan, is now dead. - Reiner gave Hange a letter from Ymir to Historia. It is unknown what it says, whether it is a secret message, and most importantly what is the status of Ymir. - Of the hundred sent to Shiganshina, there are just nine surviving members of the Survey Corps: Armin Arlert, Mikasa Ackerman, Floch Forster , Levi Ackerman, Connie Springer, Eren Yeager, Jean Kirschtein, Hange Zoe, and Sasha Blouse (injured). - Among the Corps's corpses are Marlowe Freudenberg, Moblit Berner, and 13th Commander Erwin Smith. - The current and 14th commander of the Survey Corps is now Hange Zoe. - The new user of the Colossus Titan is Armin Arlert. The last known Titan injection serum has been used. - Wall Maria is now fully sealed and the titans have been fully purged from within, meaning that the outer walls and cities can begin to be inhabited again. - ...and lastly, with Shiganshina secured and the enemies in retreat, there are no obstacles left standing between the Survey Corps and Grisha Yeager's basement.

Shark-ira

I love this episode too. There's so much I want to point out and idk where to start but here I go rambling... You're so right about everyone masking their emotions and pretending to look at it through a strategic matter. It's clear they just wanted to save their dear friend. Jean stopping Hange from taking Reiner's life shows that he's still unsure of taking human lives and that he still cares abt his former comrade. Even though he's grown as a leader, he's still not ready to take enemy lives and I love that because it's so humane. Contrary to popular belief, Mikasa was not going to take Floch's life when he approached her. Its clearer in the manga but if you slow down the frame rate you can see her rotate her sword. It's just as she did to the men who worked with the Reeve's back in season 1, like hit them with the blade only to knock them over. Eren crying and reaching out to Armin makes me so emotional. I can't imagine how painful that would be to believe this is the last time you'll ever see your best friend. Oof, it hurts :( Then there's that hug between Mikasa and Hange. Oh and Moblit too! Hange's assistant will forever be a GOAT. Okay, that's it for now. I've said enough.

Stephen

HOLY TRIPLE DROP BATMAN. Unexpected and much appreciated!

agoodwintv

That's true. If Colossal Erwin ever needed to break a wall, he wouldn't need to use his foot.

agoodwintv

Thanks :D Yeah Persona 3 is probably my favorite game of all time, and the Sun Arcana holds a special place in my heart

agoodwintv

Yeah even I felt bad about myself when I realized I had just sort of accepted the fact that Bertholdt was going to get eaten. I was so wrapped up in the choice I completely saw him as just an object, even though I like him as a character.

Jonas

The dosage is not really important, If they had Reiner they could've split the injection and have eat Berthold and the other eat Reiner but since they only have on human titan left then the injection could only be used to one person or else the second one would just be a stupid titan and then they would be forced to enventually kill him.

Jk844

For me one of the sadder moments that people don’t mention is after Bert wakes up and is about to be eaten he sees Eren, Mikasa etc. Watching and for a seconds his face lights up with a smile, like he sees his friends coming to save him, for a moment it showed even after everything his words about them being “dear comrades” is true, for a moment he thought his dear comrades were going to save him.

Anonymous

These 3 episodes are so good that you almost forget why we have come here for : the basement. Now that you've seen how great aot handled a LOT of arc conclusions, how satisfying do you think the basement reveal will be after building it up all show :) can't wait til the next week !

Anonymous

this episode hurts different. as much as i think levi made the right choice in an impossible scenario were there is no right choice, i can't help but wish he would have been selfish for once and kept erwin alive. no regrets really hit us with mad foreshadowing (intentional or not) when on 3 separate occasions levi was like 'i swear erwin smith will die by my hand' :| but it is a fitting and noble end for erwin and there truly was no better way for him to go -- finally at peace, raging against the cruelty of the world.

jdthebud

Yes, thank you for articulating this, it's really a stunning arc. Amazing writing by the author and also amazing production by the anime team.

Anonymous

Now I’m thinking of that discussion they had when Erwin told Levi that learning the truth was more important to him than losing his legs, and also more than humanity’s success. In the end, he sacrificed his dream AND lost his legs for the success of humanity.

Anonymous

Ahhh this arc is always so intense! As always, your commentary just elevates the story.

Yusuf

I love that Eren acknowledges the importance of Armin's light and optimism. He is self-aware to know that he himself is full of hate.

Yusuf

It is in contrast with Erwin's and Armin's acceptance of death. Bertholdt died a brutal death and wasn't satisfied with his beliefs. Make it so tragic.

Anonymous

yaaass three episodes thank you for the food

Anonymous

holy crap 3 reactions. Is it christmas already?

Amit

After credits scene next episode!

Nick

That is maybe the best thing nobody spoiled him on so far lol Such an intense moment if you have no idea what's going to happen

Sh3nx

This is my favorite arc of the series, considering its the climax of the return of shiganshina, something they have been teasing since season 1, there were a lot of expectations for it, and it really exceeded them for me back when this was aired. I really love this arc, and it gets better everytime I watch it. BUT!, doesn´t mean this season drops in quality after this episodes, the next and final arc its another of my favorites and its maintains the same grade of quality from this season.

Rudy Strother

Wait why didn’t he have room to speak? He just put his life on the line for Erwin, was brought to the brink of a complete mental breakdown for the exact same cause as everyone else. He had every right to speak

Khalid

the sad part about it , levi will be alone and the promise he made to erwin will burden him so much the way the camera zoomed out to show Erwin's death surrounding by his loyal comrades and rebirth of Armin surrounding by his friends its one of the saddest moment for me yet beautiful RIP Erwin aot will never be the same without you

Andrew G

Remember when Armin cosplayed Second Lieutenant Maria Ross
