One of my favorite episodes of this show. So hype!

War2244

Oh shit, I'm hype. This whole season from this point on in my opinion is a masterpiece.

R'Mani Leavell

This is the show goes from great to a fcking masterpiece. From this point on, I suggest you drop 3 episode a day or we (your fans) will riot

malikparah

Finally Zeke has been name dropped! Got tiring typing out the Beast Titan every time. Yeah poor Marco he was too smart for his own goods and had to be nerfed and hit just as hard seeing Reiner's 'soldier' personality take over and not remember that he was responsible for Marco's death. Yep Bertholdt has always been the passive one of the trio, Reiner's mental caretaker and the one emotionally holding the trio together and he's finally steeled his resolve and taken a stand at the saddest time. Definitely an episode I appreciated more on rewatch. Also about him being an amazing fighter, not many people remember that he ranked 3rd in cadet training behind Mikasa and Reiner

marcoooo😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭

War2244

Fun Fact: Bertolt was like 3rd place in the scout training and the only thing holding him back from number 1 was his timid nature if I remember correctly. That's why he was really strong fighting Mikasa.

Anders Pike

Can't wait to see the reaction to the rest of the season. Particularly the next few episodes...

Anonymous

send monke to the big leagues, his aim is always on point.

Chaz Finch

Reiner really out here doing all he can for a Klondike Bar

Keegan Brakhage

to me Bertholdt seems really similar to Eren's development in this episode. like before they were very emotional in their own ways but now they're both more reserved. I thought about that when Mikasa asked if that even seemed like Bertholdt. We are seeing a different person then we were in season 2, kinda like how Eren is a different person to reinholdt since they last saw him. (maybe "reserved" isn't the right word but you get what I mean)

Jk844

I think the reason Bertholdt was willing to talk is because that’s what Marco wanted. When they’re leaving him on the roof it specifically emphasises Bert looking back and listening to Marco calling out to talk. Bert couldn’t talk then so to fulfil Marco’s dying wish he talked with Armin (when the time was appropriate, after they’ve been rumbled)

Anonymous

Buckle up. The next 2 episodes is some of the best tv ive ever seen

Aura Y

Descent is quite the fitting name for the episode, showing how far Bertholdt's beliefs have pushed him. I don't think there's really justification for the actions they've taken, but you do feel some pain for Reiner and Bertholdt. I do appreciate how Armin does show remorse and regret, but it's a shame that this world did not allow another resolution. Next week will be full of amazing moments! Take care until then

Anonymous

These next 3 episodes are the definition of trauma.

Keegan Brakhage

I think also, because eren’s character development is so chaotic, he ends up with a lot of similarities with the core cast. A good bit of the main characters, mainly his peers, share some personality traits or sentiments with eren. Thinking about it like that made me sadder any time he fights reinholdt :(

Anonymous

Well, the next week will be one to remember... Can't wait

Anonymous

"There has to be a really good reason for all this killing." How does it feel to learn it's just genocide because racism?

Nick

It's not just that? but also this is a spoiler

themightyabe

I simply cannot wait for you to rewatch this after you finish the show.

In the last episodes comments, I said I didn't expect you to get the meaning of the ED this quick(end of innocence), which became a lot clearer in this episode i think. Also I am suprised how distraught you were at the Marco flashback. It is kinda interesting that Reiner and Bertholdt committed a lot bigger sins and a lot more deaths we already knew about, but this Marco reveal has affected your opinion of them a lot more it seems like. I mean it is understandable, people you never knew dying is kinda easier to minimize but just with the fall of shiganshina they basically caused the death of third of the people in the walls. It was 250 000 people dying. It is very interesting to see even if I understand why. You talked about the responsibility of ones actions in this episode, but I don't believe it is really that clear cut. Reiner and Berthold were 12 when they first attacked the walls and caused quarter of a million deaths. I get that it does not strip someones responsibility from their actions but their environment and mental status matter a lot (if they are just a child or have mental disabilities for instance) in my opinion. Just wanted to touch on that but there will be far better episodes to discuss this in the future. Great reaction as always, I love how impactful this show can be for you, hope you survive this season.

Nick

The shoulder pat was real Alex, but as we saw with Reiner saying "why is Marco getting eaten?" he has an extremely deep rooted conflict that has split his character into two as a coping mechanism I know they already revealed that but yeah. Makes the scene even more horrible imo especially taking into consideration that Reiner and Bertholdt both expressed that they felt normal for once living among scouts Makes you wonder why they're doing this

a. tree

In a way, while I may not be happy with what Bert is doing, I feel happy for Bertholdt in this one moment of clairvoyance that he has. While the show hasn't yet told us the full extent of what the "warriors" are going through, we do get a clear sense that by either some force stronger than them/beyond their control, or some purpose that is worth more to them than *all of humanity,* they've had to become complete monsters. We see them grappling with the weight of their unforgivable acts: Reiner developing a split-personality disorder, Annie forcing herself to be emotionally distant to avoid exactly the same pain that she wasn't able to avoid when Reiner forced her to help silence Marco, Bertholdt begging for a crumb of understanding from his "precious comrades" whose deaths are somehow necessary. Now finally it seems like he's been able to make peace and come to terms with his role: if he is forced to be the evil, then so be it. Annie be damned, even Reiner be damned — had he not been able to move Bertholdt was still prepared to incinerate him along with Hange and their squad — Bert seemed to have achieved a metaphorical and literal bird's eye view and realize that he's just playing one role in this big prewritten play. I think that peace, the ability to accept whatever happens, whichever side wins, is the best thing he could possibly have in his position. Yet, like you say, though this may be a nice viewpoint to be able to adopt, it damns you to never letting things get better. "You don't deserve to die, but you must die" means he may be stoic, but he'll still continue to hurt people and never know friendship again. There's a split second where Armin almost falls into this when he says that Reiner's "death" was unavoidable given the circumstances, and I think that hearing himself say that is what gave him the drive to negotiate with Bert in the first place. Now, Armin misjudged the situation and we can see that this has visibly shaken his faith in himself. But I hope he is able to continue to reject the "there was nothing we could do" mentality and hold on to the idea that they are able to change things for the better, because well, you've seen and are about to see exactly what the former ideology leads to... Welcome to the depths of despair.

DennisAnimeFan

I already mentioned this on the last AOT video, but I think you are watching the TV version of the episodes. It would be really cool (especially for the coming episodes) if you could switch to the Bluray edition! :)

Dominic Caciappo

Oh god I am not ready for the next few episode during the worse emotional time in my life in a few years, but damn it we move forward, advance!!!

agoodwintv

I did forget. His demeanor lulled me into the wrong idea about his abilities I guess. It's some really terrible timing to take a stand, just as Armin has some influence and actually tries to negotiate.

a. tree

I know it's to illustrate Reiner's split personality thing, but I feel like it also could be taken as a more existential question about the nature of the conflict and whatever they're fighting for. Reiner in this moment is physically unable to grapple with the fact that Marco is being torn apart by a Titan as a direct and intended result of their actions, but I can bet that the question they're all asking after doing this is "what is this all for?" "Is this really worth what we have to go through and put others through?" WHY, really, is Marco getting eaten right now?

agoodwintv

I believe I was watching the Blueray version at one point, but there were lots of complaints about the subtitles. It seems there are tradeoffs in every direction

a. tree

I would say in my opinion that it's more gray if they can be held responsible for their actions as 12 year olds, given that they were basically child soldiers and depending on where they came from might not have even been able to fully conceptualize the people within the walls to understand what they were doing — the real test comes both after they mature and after they come to understand that the people in these walls aren't just a tactical objective, they have lives with value. So I think it would be a different story if they as 12 year olds obeyed the order to kill those people and then were repentant after learning who they are, the fact that they opened the hole in Trost and then killed the citizens of Trost/Marco/the entire right wing of the 57th expedition and any additional soldiers/Levi's original squad/the citizens of Stohess/that one garrison guy whose gear Bertholdt stole/Hannes et al/the guy who caught Reiner/now potentially Hange and their squad, is something they now definitely can be seen as responsible for.

Next week is gonna be crazy

Neubaufahrzeug

Don't worry the shoulder pat was Soldier Reiner so it was genuine while the betrayal was Warrior Reiner.

Henry Law

The wait for next week is going to feel long for sure. I think you should watch the opening soon too! You’re pretty much caught up with most of what happens during it unless you realllllly look deep in the details.

hays collins

Oh my god it’s so funny watching your hope for Reiner be dashed

agoodwintv

I'm still thinking about how his demeanor in this episode relates to the last encounter he had with everyone. I'm wondering if they hadn't pushed so hard and he hadn't had that experience cowering under Reiner's protection if he would have been this dedicated to taking a stand. It seems like he's pushing back after being pushed to the edge and being meek and vulnerable for so long.

hays collins

“I want to end all of this”

FiioArt

THE SHOULDER PAT WAS REAL! GOODWIN! COMMENT SECTION! HE MAY HAVE DECEIVED EVERYONE BUT IT WASNT ALL A LIE!

Anonymous

Being in pain but loving it describes this episode so perfectly... this arc is so bold in its decisions I really really love it and you just have to respect it I think ... Something I was thinking about after the episode (for context I have not read the manga or watched season 4 part one yet). It is really interesting to see that Reiner and Berthold have somewhat different motives or at least had at some point. Reiner - at least in his warrior stage - seems to believe that there is something inherently evil to the people inside the walls (aka evil race) whereas Berthold said that he doesnt think that but still reached the conclusion that they must die nevertheless. I wonder if this made it extra hard on Reiner and therefore the split in his consciousness occurred. Like how do you comprehend that the people you saw as evil beings are actually just as human as you?

mr_wordcraft

I'm just starting the video, but since you already watched this episode, and saw how reluctant Annie was to take Marco's gear(which also explains why she had it in the first place), I recommend going back(or not really, but the scene is there in case you want to revisit it) and looking at S1E13 around 18:32, there you can see Annie begging for forgiveness and Reiner says "apologizing won't help" and she says nothing but she was obviously remorseful and heartbroken. Even before that during their training he tells her "...remember what happened when you came here, and take this seriously" and she looked at him with pure hatred, I didn't understand why at the moment but here you can see how much Reiner was the driving force behind the shifters within the walls and I can understand why Annie, though stoic, would resent Reiner so much.

a. tree

That's such a great point! Especially given that the people inside of the wall are totally walled off from wherever Reiner and Bertholdt are from, they have no concept whatsoever of what inside the walls is like. I also think that the sentiment that the wall people are evil is something that was a originally common sentiment among them, given how Reiner speaks about it and also given that the reason Armin asks if they are "spawn of the devil" is that this is the insult that Bert resorted to in Season 2 when Armin claimed that they were waterboarding Annie. It does seem like they have for the most part unlearned this, though, given how much they've come to love the 104th.

hays collins

You should go back and see the comments of the episode when Marco died hahah

hays collins

I finished the video I’m gonna go but your reaction to Marcos death was so good I’m gonna watch it again

a. tree

RIGHT!! I can't wait until they go into more detail so I can talk about this more but also remember that so far we know: a) a whole lot of the grunt work was done by Annie since she led the Titans to Shiganshina in the first place, plus she was the one who originally had to capture Eren during the 57th expedition alone, with only a (incorrect) location from Reiner; b) Reiner actively antagonized Annie during training; c) Reiner singlehandedly blew his and Bertholdt's cover, they left without attempting to pick her up, and now judging by what Zeke said in this episode NOBODY is going back for her. She got forced to do all the hard work, had to take shit from Reiner, and then got completely ditched.

Sh3nx

Oh f*ck, next episode its Perfect Game, the beggining of the triology...

So if I remember right Mikasa was the first one to start in with the cruel world stuff, and you probably remember that because Mikasa's backstory episode is incredibly horrifying on several levels. What you might not remember is the next episode where she's about to die and reflects again that the world is cruel, but then goes on to say that it's also very beautiful, and then essentially decides to not give up and keep living, even though (to her knowledge) Eren is dead at this point. I bring this up because everytime the cruel world sentiment comes up, you usually add something to the effect of that not being the whole story. I think it's interesting that Mikasa of all people is the only character in the show who's expressed something similar. But a lot of people forget about that, and it's hard to blame them, because Mikasa hasn't really had an episode that was super focused on her since those two episodes in the first half of S1. She has blink and you'll miss them moments here and there that are interesting, like the dare for Historia to punch Levi, or her emotional support of Armin in this episode, but overall she has less focus than characters like Erwin, Levi, or even Hange, which is so strange for one of the three protagonists. But anyhow, thought I'd remind you, just in case you forgot, that going by the last time we got a good look at Mikasa's internal thoughts, (way the hell back) she seems to be the one most likely to agree that there's more to the world than just cruelty. Or at least, she's the one who has explicitly said so, I think there's more characters than just her that would agree with that, they just haven't done the monologue for us.

Rose Rivers

We are not ready for the rest of the season

Anonymous

Dont know if you caught it, but Mikasa actually took off Bertie's ear lmaoo

agoodwintv

That's right! She did come to a realization about that. One step beyond "life is just cruel"

Brimmy

i do believe u can watch the OP now as the biggest thing in the OP can no longer be spoiled now XD

Nick

I refer to them as the IMDB Three lmao

Sh3nx

Btw, its very safe to watch the op now, most things left on the opening are too vague to get anything from it now, its a fun op to watch :D

benj

Learning the truth about Marco really changed my perspective on how I feel about Reinholdt. I agree that while what they did when they were 12 at Shinganshina was awful, what they did to Marco just feels SO much worse because its personal and like you said in another comment we as humans are wired to think that way regardless of the incorrect logic.

Amit

Safe to watch the opening now!

Anonymous

I said this last time too 😂 please put the next three episodes into one video. I can’t wait every other day

Matthew B

I'd like that too, but pretty sure the guy has a life outside vid reactions

Jiao

Wow, I was hoping for a joke in the description. Guess we are not getting them any time soon.

Aaron Ong

The next 3 episodes received 9.9s on IMDB, with one of them actually getting a 10. I. can. not WAIT to see your reaction. This whole season is just incredible, and it's awesome watching you pick it apart. There will be so much more to come

iaani

This season for me was "wtf is going on, how did we go from Red Swan to this"

Yusuf

I feel like this episode was really heavy for you....but this episode just got warmed up. 😬😬😬

minimonie__

Honestly reacting to aot was a great choice 👌 Also, do you plan on rewatching this series after season 4? I think this is the type of show you appreciate A LOT more once you understand the full picture (which you will soon haha). Super excited for upcoming events!! 🥳

DennisAnimeFan

Looks like you missed the name drop of the beast titan person this episode when the other titan addressed him: Zeke

Amit

Think I’d vote for 3 separate episodes for 16-18 just so we can get a more in depth discussion for all 3 episodes instead of all 3 at once. Also they didn’t all come out on the same day so it’s not like it was meant to be a 3 parter but just my opinion

Anonymous

They’re some of the highest rated episodes of any show, of all time. Beating out episodes from breaking bad and game of thrones too

Aaron Ong

This. We already get all 3 in a week, no need to stuff them all into one day

Nick

A patreon rewatch leading up to part 2 of season 4 seems to be what some people are doing. Filmbuff is planning that I'm pretty sure. I could an AOT rewatch after the ATLA rewatch but if he doesn't want to rewatch it and upload that would still be fine

Brimmy

I'd miss it too if some strange duck lookin' thing started talking in that weird voice XD
