Episode 2x2 Reaction coming a little later as well :)

Ahhh so happy you're doing the OVA's as extra reactions. IMO they are pretty much all fantastic and add a lot to the main show. The talking titan here is terrifying, one of the most horror inducing scenes in the whole show for me.

R'Mani Leavell

This may be my favorite OVA. I love it but that may be because I only watched the OVA's a few weeks ago so I already knew everything I needed to know to understand this one.

R'Mani Leavell

Correct me if I'm wrong, but this is the first time we ever see the outside world. Every expedition we've seen they were still inside the walls, even though they were in titan territory.

benj

I also may be wrong but I believe we see a couple of brief minutes of Erwin and the Scouts on a mission outside the walls in the very first minutes of the first episode of the entire show before the OP even plays. edit: Others have pointed out this entire OVA takes place within the walls because its post-Colossal titan breaking in after 100 years of peace. So I may be wrong but the first couple mins of the first episode of the whole up to this point is all we have seen of the outside world yeah? Maybe? Idk lol

Mad respect to Ilse for continuing her log in the middle of being murdered Shinzo wo sasageyo indeed. i think you picked a good spot to watch this ova as you still get the shock of the Beast titan speaking while still getting the lore expansion that this ova provides. clearly there's more to the titans as it clearly tried to resist eating Ilse, honoured her corpse and tried to lead the other scouts back to her

ComicalSkate

How have I never seen this?! That was an awesome little OVA. Really cool in retrospect after knowing the whole story.

ArmdVctr

I love how he covered all the bases of the Ymir People.

And this is why I recommended you watching episode 1 first and then this OVA, hear the monkey talking first hits so different

Oh my god the Erwin impression killed me. Pretty spot on too. I really like this episode for that Hange moment outside the command tent. I think it adds a lot to her character. What do you do if Levi is coming to kill you? Do the research, find a weakness to exploit. She isn't a joke character, but she's kind of been used in a similar way to one up to this point. It's really interesting to me that underneath her bubbly eccentricity, she's kind of a ruthless pragmatist who will do whatever it takes to win. Sheds a different light on a couple of past Hange scenes. Like the moment where she has her sword held up to Annie's eye in S1. "But don't worry...I'll be the one devouring you instead." Or her interrogation of Pastor Nick on top of the wall at the beginning of season 2.

Listening to you trying to make deductions at the end is really cool. Of course you are wrong sometimes and sometimes you are right but the way you try to connect dots is commendable! I usually get things in shows after they become obvious.

I've seen all of AoT up to the present, and I didn't even know what an OVA was until this... so that's cool 😂

benj

seriously, Monke talk hits different. It HAS to be your first time hearing Titan's speak, it just has to be.

Shark-ira

This is my favorite OVA of this series. At one point Ilse was in my top 5 favorite characters. Oh man, that was so long ago...

I never actually watched the OVA until now, so I'm pretty surprised at the way Hange was depicted here actually. Fairly sure everything outside of just Ilse's story was anime original stuff? Maybe it's just me but the way Hange acted was kind of out of character -- dunno if any other manga readers had thoughts.

KJ Gaona

Man, this episode heavily features characters who were savagely taken away from us in both season 1 and in episode 2x1... THEY TAKE THE ONES WE LOVE. Our Rock, our crimson tongue, our sniffer... And those other two :(

Brimmy

Hewwo! First time i'm watching the OVA's also first reactor i'll be watching them with :3 this is not how i thought it was going to go o.o ahh ok yes there's the talking titan...i remember hearing that there was a talking titan in this one but that's all i knew about this ova XD huh well that's a thing that exists this was neat thanks Alex :3

Ramon Cintron

Im confused did he forget there was a character in the show named Ymir? Like when I first read this and everyone else I saw made that connection immidietly but he never mentioned it. Also Ive only read this in the manga but in the manga Im pretty sure the titan didnt say People of Ymir he could only speak in short words and simply called her Ymir over and over again and they went out of their way to show she had freckles in her face which is important as to why he acted like that but in the anime they barely drew them in. The anime filler filled version of this OVA feels wierd and feels nothing at all to the original extra chapter

Aaron Ong

Ymir was mentioned only a handful of times this far into the show. She gets attention in Season 2, but I don't blame him for forgetting her. I have also seen a handful of reactors not pick up on the name drop from Season 1 alone.

i love coming across the little golden nuggets of truth within your speculations and commentary after the episode lol full length reactions are the way to go

Nick

I never watched any of the OVAs and I am now realiziing how much confusion it could have saved me lol. This clears so much up for me from this season (and next season) that I was like: "...what?" from

Sh3nx

Back when this OVA came around in 2013 (before M O N K E titan), this was an absolutely insane episode. good times

benj

I can't imagine knowing about this titan that talks and than waiting 4 years to finally hear M o n k e talk

Anonymous

I think this is part of why Erwin insisted on declaring the people whose bodies weren't collected as MIA. All evidence pointed to Ilse being dead, but turns out she was alive that whole time. Up until she encountered that titan at least. I'm not up to date though so I could be wrong lol. This was just my thought when I'd seen this OVA the first time

Anonymous

omg years of watching this show and reading the manga and im still making new connections. I just noticed something I never have before in this ova

Albert Rhodes

Holy shit, I hadn't watched this OVA again since finishing this season, and it makes SO much more sense with the context I have now! Gahhh!

Norrin Radd

Can't wait til you watch the OVA "Lost Girls"!!! It's the best one.

meg

There's quite a few OVAs I'm not sure if you would want or need to make reactions to them, they're kind of just a look into the daily lives of the cadets that have no real bearing over the plot. "A sudden visitor: the torturous curse of adolescence" is literally a cook off between Sasha and Jean, "Distress" is a training mission gone wrong for Eren and crew which is suspenseful and action packed but really has no influence on the plot at all it's just fun to see the crew all together training. I do recommend watching the "Lost Girls" OVAs which is a three part look into Annie and Mikasa's characters it's interesting and definitely gives information to previous parts of the series but I recommend that you watch it anytime after season 2 because watching it while season 2 is happening is somewhat distracting because it doesn't bare any importance. And of course, "No regrets" OVA can be watched anytime it doesn't add anything plot wise but has interesting insight to Levi's past.

hays collins

“Although I think we know a lot more” haha do you really

This was my first time watching this OVA and it was a crazy experience after knowing the whole story. I wonder how my experience with AOT would have been different if I had seen this before watching season 2/the rest of the series.
