Katara: do you want to talk about it Aang: no Also aang: talks about it 😂

hays collins

Is it cool seeing this again which is basically the start of the lore building around the avatar state but seeing it with all the knowledge you gained from watching korra

Anonymous

Im hyped for the aot reaction!

hays collins

It’s cool how the Kyoshi novels gave such insight to the significance of the hair cutting

benj

oh nice three episodes love to see it

Rachel Espiritu

The most unrealistic thing about 2x03 is people running away from the plague.

WolfWarrior623

"I'm saying I'd rather kiss you than die" and here we have Aang doing earthbending long before he met Toph, digging himself the fastest, deepest hole in existence.

hays collins

I love your aversion to the Rayllum ship compared to how much you love aang and Katara haha

benj

I love both but yeah its always nice to see people love kataang especially when the disgusting zutara shippers exist.

Etsch

The nomads songs make me so nostalgic for when I first watched the show. Ty Lee knows that if she doesn't go with Azula she will keep causing trouble for the circus.

agoodwintv

Yeah there are a lot of things that are interesting/funny to see after finishing LOK

hays collins

So funny to me how there’s all these Asian and Inuit inspired names and then there’s Tom Tom haha

Alec Campo

My thought was that Ty Lee knew that if she didn’t agree to join, Azula would be attending all of her shows, which means she would literally almost die every day. Her line about the universe was basically so she didn’t have to confront Azula directly. My thoughts lol.

I just want to say shout out to the minnesota sweatshirt in the back born and raised

I hated the Nomads back when I first watched this show as well, I appreciate them alot more now I've grown up. And damn those songs are catchy.

Jupiterninja

i thought that black dot in the background was a smudge on my monitor

Jupiterninja

I need a mini comic where Firelord Zuko comes back to that house and gifts them a new ostrich horse as well as a ****load of money and offers a sincere apology

Kamolak

when we see aangs dreams he often makes that motion like he's cutting someone down.. i think some of his fear is that he'd kill while blacked out in that state

I really like the points you make about relationships and politics. Funnily enough, me and a good friend of mine who used to be similar politically diverged to totally different and opposite beliefs, and we eventually slowly lost touch. However, the other day he reached out and explained that the reason he kinda pushed me away was that he was being pressured by likeminded people to cast away those who held different beliefs. I told him that obviously he's free to do so, but there is so much value in discourse with those whom you disagree, especially if you actually want to advance that ideology. Fortunately, he agreed and actually thanked me for being the only person who reminded him to think for himself. And today, me and him went on a 3 hour bike ride together and reconnected and had a fulfilling conversation about politics. So at the end of the day we both went home understanding there's a lot more that unites us as friends and fellow humans, and that political ideology shouldn't govern your relationships with people, and I just thought that connected really well to what you were saying in this reaction. Sorry that personal anecdote was dense lol, I just thought it to be a funny coincidence how this just happened today and I see you bring it up in this vid. Of course everyone has their own experiences, but I really feel like political disagreements among average civilians is too trivial to be the lone destructive force when it comes to relationships.

Y'know, part of my headcanon is that Zuko went back and returned his debt to Song after Ozai was defeated, in the time before he took up the throne. That scene is such a good one; you just feel... ashamed watching the both of them. Fun thing you might like to know: Cheong from the Cave of Two Lovers was voiced by the same guy that does the voices for Momo and Appa. Great Reaction, see you for the next one! EDIT: Also, S2E1 is one of my top 10 fights in ATLA because of those seamless and beautiful cuts between Zuko and Aang. DOUBLE EDIT: We share the same headcanon!

That one fire Avatar was Avatar Szeto (the accountant guy)

benj

How amazing is it that the season begins Zuko's character with the lines "I want it back. My country, my throne, etc." and than at the very end of the season makes the literal choice to get all of those things back...and he does, even though it ends up being at a cost (Betraying Iroh and potentially not being able to get your scarred healed). Writing do be 10/10 in this show.

Jupiterninja

It bothers me so much how he cools the chain holding up Bumi with his breath and then breaks the chain in a completely different spot from where he cools it

The more I think about it, the more I think Book 2 is my favorite season. It does have its own arc from the first episode to the last, like Pakku giving Katara the spirit water and then at the end she uses it to revive Aang. Also Aang trying to master the avatar state but being unable, and then at the end he is able to enter it through the guru's teachings. The whole thing about dying in the avatar state and then him actually dying in the avatar state. Azula's lightning-bending to try to kill Zuko and then using it to kill Aang. Both times, Zuko wanting to fight Azula even though Iroh says to just GO, it's not worth it. Azula enticing Zuko to come back home, with Zuko almosttt leaving Iroh, but then at the crossroads of destiny straight up betraying him. Zuko first becoming a refugee and then returning to royalty. But back to the episodes at hand. It's incredible what kind of fine line Iroh has to walk when talking to Zuko about his father. Like he obviously knows the extent of Ozai's abuse but he has to choose his words carefully so that Zuko doesn't write him off and leave. Also I just noticed the ruins of the village Oma and Shu were from as they were walking towards the tunnel (34:47). Reminds me a bit of Xerxes in FMAB. I'm really trying to notice the musical themes this go-around, and I think it's so neat that they included the little riff from Oma and Shu's story at the very last scene of the show. I think the second to last scene with everyone in the tea house is the same tune from when they've escaped the tunnel. But yeah Ty Lee is aware of Azula's manipulation but her self-preservation makes her act kinda dumb to get on her good side. Mai does something similar. In The Drill episode they make a quick comment about it which makes it more obvious. They know it's game over once they get on Azula's bad side. All the signs to their eventual betrayal are so subtle which makes it all the more powerful when it happens. I'm pretty sure Ozai and Azula knew the Avatar was around though, but she made it a priority because she thought she could handle the assignment herself. For some reason Bumi puts a lot of trust in Momo. He knows something we don't lol. And I don't even think of myself as very independent or anything, and man I hate making mistakes but the fact that I'm making my own and not someone else's does resonate with me. I have no clue what I'm doing with my life but I believe I have time to figure it out. And if not, hopefully I'll find some fulfillment in the journey anyway.

In my opinion, the jump in quality from Book 1 to Book 2 doesn't actually start until ep 7, Zuko Alone.

Jamie Morgan

Funny, I kind of had the opposite experience to yours. One of my best friends for years was politically opposite to me (not massively, but enough that we both noticed, y'know?) but we just never let that come between us. Even when I came out as queer and transgender, she remained super supportive of me even though I knew a lot of her peers would have balked at that. Unfortunately, those peers got to her and she started being less and less supportive of my identity, then she started posting queerphobic stuff on her Facebook, then on MY Facebook. And all that was so gradual I stayed best friends with her until she outright told me my identity was 'fake' and I was doing it all for attention etc. That's when I couldn't stay friends with her any more. Absolutely broke my heart, but it was too much of an emotional drain to keep her in my life any more. I do hope one day we can have our three-hour bike ride and clear the air. I really do believe she was just surrounding herself with the wrong people. I know deep down she's not like that. I miss her.

agoodwintv

@Joe Martin damn that is a beautiful story. Thanks for sharing. It gives me hope! @Jamie Morgan Sorry to hear about that. I hope that this story turns out to be not the opposite of Joe's story, but instead the beginning of a similar one.

agoodwintv

Yes, that is exactly what happened. He returns and repays her kindness, and they have a great conciliatory conversation over some roast duck :D But even if it didn't happen, I think Song would understand. It's crazy how I have such deep feelings for a character who is on screen for like 2 minutes. Great writing

agoodwintv

Yeah it's damn good. And the hesitation when Azula says Ozai wants him back. To me that feels like a big turning point and hint at the fact that that dream will change. What I love about Zuko is that he DOES actually get those things, but in a much more satisfying way.

agoodwintv

You make a great case for Season 2 :D They knew where they were going and take us there in the most satisfying ways. The mistakes thing is something I've been thinking about a lot lately. As I said, I think a lot of advice or information comes from the best of intentions, but there's something magical about having personal insight on particular paths and how they do or don't suit you, and often the reality of those choices is counter-intuitive. Sometimes less money means more money, sometimes more freedom means less freedom, etc. It's really complicated and I think the only way to hone in on a solid path is reflection about what it is we ACTUALLY want, which sometimes seems to be hidden from ourselves, but that's where instinct and insight come in. I don't think I will ever have an answer to the question "what am I doing with my life," but I always have an answer to the question "what am I doing with my life RIGHT NOW," and that has led to some fantastic places, and maybe that IS ultimately what I'm doing with my life.

A Suresh

Yeah, you get a really good feel for the characters very quickly after they're introduced.

Two hours of Goodwin Avatar analysis?! You love to see it. :D

benj

to be honest I don't notice a major jump in quality at all throughout all three seasons. Whole thing is a 10/10 masterpiece, I'll never understand people who don't think Season One is a flawless masterpiece just like the other seasons.

Alex Begley

Something I just thought of is about Song showing Zuko her scar. I think it's obvious the writers use Zuko's scar as a physical symbol of his internal scars, but watching this now I'm wondering if Song's reveal of her scar kind of made Zuko realize he's not the only one who's "scarred". I think he's internalized this idea that he's lived the worst life possible (something I think we can all relate too) but when he sees that Song has also been scarred, it sort of clicks that others are capable of going through similar or even worse pain. I've encountered similar situations when I've listened to others talk about any trauma they've had in life and all of a sudden my issues and worries don't seem as monumental as they did before. It's one of those things were you realize everyone else is also "human" if that makes sense. It strips away the fantasy you imagine everyone else to be living.

Jackie

I appreciate these rewatches because they do look like they take a long time to watch, react, analyze and edit. Thanks dude!

the guy who voiced the crazy earth king dude obsessed w the avatar state is also Hiroshi Sato

The Trio is really interesting to me, coz I can't quite make up my mind about how they really feel about each other? Like, there seems to be some affection there, but it also doesn't seem to go very deep? People like Ty Lee will give anyone a chance, but she's also clearly afraid of Azula. Mai seems less afraid, but also less interested in Azula, like, I get the impression she befriended her because she was told to and then developed stronger bonds with Ty Lee and Zuko. Mostly, she just craved some excitement, and apparently Ty Lee isn't averse to it either, given how easily she goes along, I don't think that's just her going-with-the-flow nature. And then there's Azula, who clearly has no concept of what real friendship is, but you can tell that the other two aren't just tools for her, she does value them. I'm especially curious about why she was drawn to someone like Ty Lee, that's kind of unexpected, where Mai, again, was probably just deemed suitable company, I don't necessarily think she picked her out herself? It's fascinating.
