I had always thought that the reason why Hisoka was so likeable is because of his competency but you're definitely right, I think a large part of his charisma also comes from how authentic he is. Still not someone I would feel comfortable around for a variety of reasons lol

Hisoka really is a one of a kind character. Off the top of my head I can’t think of anyone else I’d compare him to. It’s incredible that a character that gets sexual gratification from literal children (among many others) could ever be considered likable, but here we are.

The closest comparison I can think of is Kimblee in FMAB but still very different, the overlap is maybe just that they're both unapologetically what they are

Oak

Oooh I hadn’t thought of Kimblee. But now that you’ve brought him up he is definitely similar in that way. Kimblee also stands out among his local cast as well. When either of them are on screen you can really feel the attention they steal.

We like Hisoka because he has the power of both rubber and gum

The gym leader is the same dude that confronted the phantom troupe when they came to the island via boat

It took me way too long to realize that but I had the realization in the next episode

Holy shit I never realized they actually animated Gon & Killua's eyes moving to track... *something*... during that scene. I mean I got the implication regardless, but...

Xylen

I must've been too distracted by those chiseled cheeks to catch that before

Ryan

The city of 'ai-ai', where you have to navigate love tropes. I actually had hoped they would spend more time there taking pot shots at romance stories for Goodwin's enjoyment, but such is that.

Oh you'll be meeting a similar character to Hisoka two arcs from now. They both are creepy, but at the same time very competent and compelling.
