Hello everyone! Sorry for the double announcements, but I literally just got the email.

The text:

"Hi there,

Thanks for your interest in early access to subscription billing. As of today, August 16, you're now charging new patrons when they join, and monthly on that same date. Nothing changes for your existing patrons, who will continue to be charged on the 1st.

Please let me know if you have any questions, and look forward to hearing how it goes!"

Beneath the Dragoneye Moons Patreon is now enrolled in Patreon's "Recharge when you subscribe" model.

This applies to new patrons going forward. I'm aware some of you are grabbing pitchforks and torches right now, so let me get through everything and clarify it all. Because I do believe a small subset of people have gotten screwed, and I'm going to do what I can to make it right.

Previously and generally, when you sign up for Patreon, you get automatically rebilled at the end of the month. If you sign up on 28th July, you'll get rebilled again on the 1st of August. Which SUCKS.

This is no longer the case with BTDEM. Now if you sign up on the 28th of July, you'll get charged again on the 28th of August for the new month. Rejoice!

(It is unclear how they're handling 31st signups at this time - I imagine it's end of the month?)

Now, for everyone who's subscribed before this announcement, I believe that you'll be charged on the 1st as normal, and your "Join date" counts as the 1st of the month. Nothing changes! This will only impact new patrons.

And to be crystal clear, nobody is losing a benefit they have paid for. There is simply a gross disparity between people who have signed up for BTDEM yesterday, and people who have signed up today.

And now we get to the awkward part. I announced the patreon change yesterday, and a ton of people seized the moment to upgrade their patreon tier. However, this change that just got implemented today is robbing all 77 of those people of half a month of membership, effectively. People who signed up yesterday get 15 days, and people who sign up today get 30 days? No. It's like someone buying a book, and then it's on sale half-off the next day, no warning.

This is wrong.

This makes me upset.

If anyone would like a refund, I'll be delighted to process it, no questions asked, so you can properly get the full timeframe you are now entitled to. I'm deeply sorry that the announcements and changes happened right next to each other like this, and they didn't get merged. I just didn't know at the time I wrote yesterday's announcement that this would happen!

Do note that if you've been a subscriber for awhile now, nothing will change. This really only is impacting people who've signed up this month.

Seriously, the timing is super embarrassing. I am so sorry. I'm trying to be as forthcoming and as honest as possible with this.

I do believe this is a major plus for BTDEM going forward. It's why I signed up for the program! Now, anytime anyone joins, they get a FULL MONTH of content, instead of whatever fraction of the month is left.

It feels like you always go above and beyond for the readers, that's really nice. There are people who wouldn't have bothered with it. I'm sure those asking for a refund will really appreciate it. Anyway, we love your work! Have a nice day, 👍

Thanks for the heads up. Hope more authors switch to this method as I tend to wait till the beginning of a month to sign up and then forget for a month or two until I eventually sign up.

Shit happens, don't sweat it too much. You're doing what you can to make it right, which is all anyone can ask.

Julian

Yeah incentivating people to wait with signing up was a really bad result.

this should be how it works for everyone, waiting for the start of the month to subscribe or resubscribe has always seemed weird to me. thx for the update will be keeping up with story when and as I can

I would find it really funny if they forget the 31st issue and make it so you get 2 months per payment X). Good chap!

I don't think many of us who upped our subscriptions are too worried about paying for the extra half-month. But still nice to see such a thoughtful post/refund offer.

I read most all of the stuff on amazon before switching to royal road. With the stuff on royal road ahead of the published bit and $5 for patreon it is more than a good deal. I likely got a book and a half out of the stuff. $10 for a book and a half's worth of content is still a good deal IMO too.

Gotta love corporate administration communications. Always on point and with such long lead to prepare and plan for.

Yay this means that they will no longer screw up my time zone.
