Hey everyone!

I've been working with Cignal again to create deck plans for the Raptor. It was wonderful to see the room layouts I'd envisaged, especially with the Raptor playing such a large role in the story.

I hope you like them!

That is awesome, would it be possible to get an SVG copy? Or even better, have you sonsidered selling posters for some these schematics?

Anonymous

Oh sweet schweeet vector graphics!

Muledrvr

Very cool.... However, don't the winglets get in the way of the port and starboard docking collars? Or is there a sort of unmentioned extending tube?

Binuvyen

The upper left image shows one of the airlocks extended in green.

Muledrvr

Yeah, my bad. The green was difficult to see at first. Bad signal area, and next message never posted.

Anonymous

You bring smile to my face! Thanks! Happy 2019!

Alphaonetango

Good line drawing! Not what I thought it would look like but I will always keep that image as my littoral head cannon. Looking forward to more art! Hopefully we can get some more John and girls working next to regular human or a joint species Spec-ops would love too see our little gray bois* riding the rock dudes* into battle. (*I am shit at spelling and don’t even want to try and spell their names lel)

Scott Way

I did not realize the raptor was so big lol. I was picturing something a little smaller than a stargate Gould cargo ship

Anonymous

Awesome, as with the last one, Cignal. My only question would be in having the remainder of the turrets on a pintle/swivel mount of some sort, as I seem to remember that they could be set to auto-fire defensively, and had been used like that while Jade was in combat with fighters and missiles. Keep up the awesome work!

Cignal

The two Tachyon Lance are lateral mount. The 6 defense turrets are all turret mount. The chin turret is a twin turret mount, the other 4 are single turret mount. So they all are able to swivel.

I love it!! My wife, however says this confirms that your (our) story is science fiction as one toilet will never do for 8 women. LOL LOL Thanks, this is great.

Anonymous

Tefler, I love the design and think it great. I do have a question on Inertia Negation Column to work correctly it would have to be set along the long axis from an engineering standpoint.

Jedi Khan

That's probably true if it were using a means of inertia negation that didn't involve anti-gravity fields. As it is, I imagine that anti-gravity fields can be set to work on any axis, regardless of the physical orientation of the device itself.

"Progenitor engines"?

Anonymous

Will this be in the next book edition? It would be nice to have a few art pieces. Thank you sir for all your hard work, it is appreciated

GeyserGod

They use them when Rachel has her brake down during the one pirate battle. This is when they find out that her mother was kidnapped by pirates and killed because her father wouldn't pay. Rachel and either Dana or Jade spend most of the time from the end of the Pirate attack to when they get to the Terran Port in one of those rooms.

HornsOfTheseus

It is only the Raptor which is definitely not meant to house the entire crew for extended periods of time. The Invictus has a ridiculous number of bathrooms.

Jedi Khan

Yeah, I wondered about that too. I'm pretty sure Dana hasn't unlocked the schematics for Progenitor/Thrall level engines yet, so the team is still using Trankaran engines.

Grimlakin

No under carriage turrets. So ground defensive fire while. Hovering is not going to work. Fields of fire need to cover bottom and top. I would have a top center chassis and lower center chassis as well as gun mount point for rear deck. And for the wing chassis side turrets I would want those in pairs over and under.

Anonymous

Alternatively to over/under on the wings would be wingtip mount, with gimbals for versatility. Could cover the front, back, up/down and sideways for each side.

David Shmilowitz

Awesome schematics. Also YAY, Tefler is back. Soon ch115 will be final version, e-book 4 will be released and my holiday TSM deprivation will finally be cured

Alphaonetango

Me too, but it was originally designed as a spec-ops lading craft and could hold like 25-40 troops and their gear. So like with the Invictus (I think I spelled that right) it was built for more people then they need so they got space to make it more home like.

B S

I think that is why the Millennium Falcon's gun arrangement is so cool with overlapping fire around the rim ("the money lane" if you've read Brian Daley's novels which describes how the Falcon's quad turrets should work in combat). full coverage (apart from fire lockouts where the cockpit and sensor antenna are) I am currently building the giant 1/43 falcon from the magazine subscription....its spread all over the living room......lol

Anonymous

I thought the Raptor was capable of firing at pursuing craft. Between the engines blocking the side-mounted torrents and the back fin blocking the top-mounted turnt this would be almost impossible.

Malthe Mørk Mejlby

Why does it have wings? I always pictured it like a cross between a puddlejumper from stargate atlantis and a F-117 Nighthawk.

tony

i personally wouldn't mind seeing an animated web series in a similar visual & animation style to the clone wars show, hell i'd bump my tier up to more than it is now to see that.............just saying............and tefler, welcome back. i hope the holidays were restful for you and yours.......

Grimlakin

That would have to be a hentai. Not to say it couldn't be done. But a normal. Cartoon could not.cover the content. You know it could make a good hentai series as well. You even have tentical sex. Hummm...

Anonymous

I seen one of those at a model show in Cincinnati, complete with lighting. Pretty freaking awesome!!! Best of luck and post a picture when your done if you can.

Anonymous

It is possible that we are members of different fandoms. I imagined something the size of the clone carriers from the Star Wars prequels or bigger. I agree with the F-117 and the size of the wings and their downward angle reminded me of a Harrier Jump Jet.

Anonymous

Given that it's roles are space combat and ground support (given the uses we've seen so far and the fact that it is supposed to be able to an assault ship/shuttle?) then I'm surprised that there isn't at least a pair of defense turrets on the underside of the wings, or mounted in some other position eg outside edge of wings so as to have far greater coverage area than the turrets on top. I can imagine the damage of the chin turret hitting harder targets while two more turrets are independently attacking other ground threats on the way in. I rather like that idea :P

Jedi Khan

Keep in mind what the Raptor was originally designed for: spec-ops troop transport. That's what was mentioned when the TFed gave the Raptor to John. At the time, it had Gatling Lasers on the turrets and Laser Cannons in the shoulders. That was actually a lot of fire power for a ship of its size and classification at the time. The Laser Cannons alone were extraordinary, as those are usually only available on much bigger ships. I imagine the standard tactical insertion using the Raptor would have it perform a rapid deployment and drop of the troops, often in such a way that its arrival comes as a complete surprise. The military wouldn't send spec-ops on a mission where they had to shoot their way into the LZ before heading for the objective. It would drop the soldiers, then back off before the enemy had a chance to react, by then the guys on the ground would already be suppressing the enemy. If necessary, it could provide fire support to the troops on the ground, using the Gatling Lasers for anti-personnel and light armor targets, and the Laser Cannons for heavier targets. Even though it has done this multiple times with the team, at no point was the Raptor ever expected to get into a slug fest or a dog fight by its designers. The weapons were placed with the expectation that the Raptor would be able to line up its targets with near impunity, and not have to worry about being surrounded or taking fire from behind. This was exceptionally demonstrated during the Armored Cobra's raid, where the Raptor was pretty much used exactly as originally designed by the TFed: insert a small strike team, then back off and take out targets of opportunity.

tony

i seem to remember in 1978 or 79 on nickolodian(sp?) they had a show where they showed comic books and had somebody narriating(sp?) it, it seems like this story could be like too, i really really don't want to run it thru a text-to-speech program, doing that i'd have to go thru and do an edit so that word spellings would come out sounding right and i'm too lazy to do that.......sorry all.......

Jedi Khan

Why would you have to change the spelling? Is it because Tefler is using the British version of English? The pronunciation should be the same regardless of the spelling. The real difference would come from the quality of the text-to-speech engine. Trust me, they're not all equal. There is a high chance that the program would butcher the pronunciation of a word even if it was spelled correctly. Plus, there's the issue of some words being pronounced in different ways depending on the context despite the spelling being the same, such as the word "read," which can either be pronounced as "reed" or "red." It is possible that Tefler could get an audio version made of the ebooks on Amazon, who owns Audible.com, an audio book maker. From what I understand of the process, they have actual people, professional voice actors almost, read the book and record that. I know of one author who I follow who has done that and from what I've heard (re: I've not actually listened to the books myself), the audio versions of his book are very good. The author himself has claimed that he's quite pleased with the renditions.

Cignal

During the design with Tefler on the Raptor, I did suggest a turret under each wing and a twin gun swivel turret above the rear landing door to be added at the next refit. He stated that all the hard points had been used already, so I don't think we will see any more guns on the Raptor. My intent was to add hard points during the refit, but I think that was nixed.

Anonymous

Wow, that's actually really good. Almost exactly as I imagined

Anonymous

I've already put into a .png format. I mainly use .png and .dwg formats but I think I have a program to convert to .svg on one of my computers.

Big Dude

Well aluminum - aluminium color - colour flavor - flavour behavior - behaviour harbor - harbour honor - honour humor - humour labor - labour neighbor - neighbour rumor - rumour splendor - splendour diarrhea - diarrhoea organize - organise realize- realise recognize - recognise labeled - labelled for example!

Nibbles

Don't you mean proper English? Perhaps we should not go into the improper use of some words like Tire ...... which of course is what we do when we work! and not use it for the round things that go on wheels as those are Tyres.

Anonymous

tony, JK and Nibbles if you have Windows 10, you can run it thru Narrator and it will correctly choose the right word for the pronunciation of a word every time.

Anonymous

As opposed to those of us in Australia who spell correctly but mangle it when we speak. 😉

Anonymous

anyone heard from Tef about the E-book or the next chapter for that matter?

Anonymous

Any chance of an update please?

Taco1085

cant wait for the next chapter... going to be great i know

Anonymous

Jedi Khan, if this went to audible I'm thinking lorelei king.... she's awesome

David Shmilowitz

In your schematics, the wing mounted weapons are on top of the wings, but in e-book 2 it says that there are "Two more Gatling Laser turrets set underneath the backswept wings", implying the weapon hard-points are underneath the wings as well, rather than above them. Did Dana change the positioning at a later chapter, or are the upgraded tachyon cannons still supposed to be underneath the wings?

Tefler

Yeah that was my mistaking when I was giving Cignal the brief. He sent me an updated version and I've uploaded that to the post. :-)

Who Me

Now where's the blueprints for the IMPORTANT ship - The Invictus!

Jedi Khan

I'll take your word for it. I haven't listened to any audio books in a long, long time, if ever.

Nibbles

The drawings of the raptor remind me little of Thunderbird 2 except for the guns. I imagined the space craft to have more rounded profile and not all angular and straight lines everywhere.

Dennis Banfield

Keep in mind the Raptor can be used in ground support actions, where atmospheric resistance would have an effect - so while the harsh lines don’t help any in space, for any battles in an atmosphere, they’re invaluable.

Anonymous

It's been a while since I've read the relevant chapters, but didn't the raptor have two lances/laser cannons as the main guns?

Jedi Khan

yes. Those are marked as Tachyon Lances on the schematics here.

Cignal

Tefler called them shoulder mounted, so I tucked them up tight on top of the wing to the fuselage.

Nibbles

Odd would have though that sharp angles while they may help scatter a radar signature the would cause turbulence and drag. Smooth lines reduce drag.

tony

thought the raptor was armed with laser weapons not Tachyon

Jedi Khan

The Tachyon weapons are essentially laser weapons, but vastly more powerful and more technologically advanced. The Raptor was originally equipped with TFed Laser Cannons and Gatling Lasers, but those have long since been replaced.
