In regards to what you said about Kyuhyn, when he was in King of the Masked Singer as Genie, he had a winning streak of I believe 5? Which at the time I think put him as the male idol with the highest winning streak

2022-12-04 09:33:44 I'm glad I'm not the only one who's always left massively confused by the segment where the guest has to make the cast guess the answer. Every time I see that segment I'm always baffled as to how they manage to get the correct answer lol Yesung's Ho-dong trauma, where he was told to be quiet, actually dates back to ~2007 when SuJu were guests on a show called Star King that Ho-dong was the host of at the time. He says it's one of the main reasons he didn't go on variety shows for a long, long time after that. His tiny hands are also a running joke so I can't say I'm surprised you called them out. SuJu basically tackled their enlistment as "we'll cross that bridge when we get to it". So for nine years, from 2010-2019, the group was incomplete as members reached age 28 and enlisted, all the while still releasing group albums. During this time D&E was the only sub-unit of theirs that was active because the members of K.R.Y were also serving (Yesung is one of the older members and Ryeowook and Kyuhyun are the youngest two so the timing didn't allow for much unit work) and the other sub-units are ostensibly defunct due to members leaving the group/company. As for enlistment itself, a lot of what we as foreigners see are the celebrity enlistments, people who have a lot of eyes on them and who are presumably treated as such. There was a drama that came out last year on Netflix called D.P. that got a lot of domestic attention for its realistic portrayal of mandatory military service. They did not shy away from depicting the extreme bullying and hazing that goes on in the barracks and a lot of male viewers who had already completed their service said that it was PTSD-inducing. In fact, Onewe's Kanghyun was recently assigned to the 55th division right after news broke of there being a band leader that physically and verbally abused the soldiers in their division and fans were understandably upset. So I don't think mandatory military service is as easy as you might think in comparison to U.S. service, especially when so many Korean soldiers try to get into KATUSA, which works directly with the US Army, because they see it as being less abusive and more professional in their treatment of the soldiers. SuJu have had 9 members participate in King of Masked Singer with Kyuhyun and Ryeowook both appearing twice. Kyuhyun's second appearance is the one being discussed here because his 5 wins were the most by any male idol at the time. That record has since been broken by Winner's Seungyoon (6 wins) and Highlight's Yoseob (8 wins, currently tied for second in terms of most wins by any contestant). I'd love for Yesung to Heechul to go back for second tries. Heechul especially has a great voice that often goes underappreciated, I think.

There's a good bit of wordplay and wit in this show so sometimes it goes over my head due to cultural context and translations 😅 Yeah I could see the internal politics and hierarchies being a thing in the Korean military. I guess I meant that they're never really leaving home right? Like in the US you might never see combat, but you could be stationed on a base across the world too.

I think for public figures (especially really big ones) the enlistment time isn’t that bad. but for the general public, depending on where they get put it can be really awful. There’s a drama called D.P. and while it is obviously dramatized, it brought up a lot of issues that I hadn’t thought of concerning the korean military. also i know that inseong from sf9 was in mexico for a bit of his service because of where he was stationed so i know that sometimes people do have to leave the country but like they’re not sending them to active war zones.
