Hello everyone,

I have been mulling about the pledge system of Patreon this last month or so and have had the idea to change up said system.

I have been reading various articles about content creators overselling/ underselling their own content and I have had people contact me stating that I should potentially increase the base tier to $2 as Patreon takes a cut of all donations and 40 cents to the dollar is lost on $1 pledges whereas the $2 pledge allows me to retain roughly $1.70 due to the weird way they regulate transactions.

I have also been told that I should allow $20, $50, $100 pledges if there are those out there crazy enough to want to give financial aid that way.

To put it as I see it, I feel as though the system is pretty good as it is, there is nothing more I feel I could potentially offer until I hit the ground running with making comics and the game. I could perhaps offer Patreon members their name in the credits of TLotK and at the end of comics.

This is quite a complex topic so I shall create a simple poll, but would love to hear your thoughts on the matter. :)

Perhaps then bump up every tier level 1€? I mean, it's not gonna bust anyone's wallet, just one less bottle of beer, which should be manageable to anyone who has passion towards this project. Also adding another tier or even two might not be bad, personally I would not mind at all. Not saying I would defo pledge to either or but I would defo not feel insulted nor brushed aside if it where so.

I wouldn't expect people to pledge to the higher tiers to be honest, it's a crazy amount. The odd thing is upping everything by a dollar wouldn't work either as the Patreon system takes at various monetary amounts, such as $1 to $2 having a huge gap in what Patreon takes as opposed to between $5 and $6, so if anything was going to change it would likely just be the $1 tier being upped to $2 for now with some additional tiers for anyone mad enough to donate that much. Thanks for letting me know your thoughts. :)

Maybe bump up the minimum to $2 if that makes sense to work around Patreon's rules. The rest of the tiers are probably fine. People can always specify a custom amount if they want to.

Oh my God, I actually did not know that.. thank you for sharing. Edit: Just to be openly clear, I stand by my original thoughts.

I think the idea of implementing much higher donations such as 20/50/100 while retaining the smaller tiers is a fantastic idea

The bump to the min pledge up to $2 makes sense with the given above explanation of the revenue split. As far as expanding higher tier pledges I don't see why not. I've seen creators go the route of higher tiers as just additional options without offering additional content as well as alternatively expanding the extras received each tier for more incentive for people to make that higher pledge. Obviously an issue with the latter could be having to split time from game development to deliver on items promised to higher tiers.

I have to agree with the comments above, I'd suggest increasing the minimum pledge to $2 and add higher tier donation pledges. One way to deal with the development time sink of higher tier pledges would be to have them be relatively simple to implement ones, such as offering multiple suggestion chances, though the highest tier should probably offer more, like getting an NPC developed or something, but regardless, the minimum tier pledge increase to be economically sound would be unlikely to be too much of an issue to most, and there are certainly people who would pay for higher tiers, even if just to support the project.
