Finally got around to finishing an adapted ASL alphabet for Talita, plus two extra handshapes for funsies. Conversing in ASL requires knowing word signs more than it requires knowing the alphabet, but the handshape classifiers in word signs often refer to the alphabet, (e.g. CL-A open and CL-closed, CL-B flat and CL-B bent). Hand shapes are the main challenge for Talita, so this is the building blocks for how she talks in ASL.

Next is numbers, a whole other mess, and not because Talita can't count to 5 on one hand-- she can actually count to 10 on one hand, and has a unique method of doing so that doesn't resemble ASL's method.

Awww, the little CL "I Love You" at the end, there! These lovely touches of personality in the midst of the brilliant world building never ceases to amaze me. Also... "she can actually count to 10 on one hand, and has a unique method of doing so" I have never wanted to learn how someone counts on their fingers more than now. Please, go on...

Talita would probably have more success with binary counting, since she can still count to 15 on one had and her engineering background would have her familiar with it.

This gives me life every time I see them signing ;w;

Based on the scribbling I've done, I think she could manage 0-16. I was thinking the sequence she uses probably starts off similar to human finger counting, then goes into different combinations. It wouldn't be exactly like the binary system but that's a great suggestion for number combinations after 4, thanks!

The "ILY" addition makes me think, what if Talita signed that to Shyam...? :O

I just read a book that had an absolutely terrible grasp of deafness and ASL, and this is SO refreshing
