R Lee Ermey was an absolute legend. Was a Marine Staff Sergeant and I heard he did the part at the begging as improvisation. Not sure if it was 100% on the spot but it was amazing to watch. He even had his own show called Mail Call on the history channel.

I'll always remember how hard my mother cried after watching this movie. She and my father lost more than a few friends to Vietnam, and the way it was laid bare here broke her.

And also I'd highly recommend David Leans war films BRIDGE ON THE RIVER KWAI 1957, LAWRENCE OF ARABIA 1962 & DR. ZHIVAGO 1966

also, adding in the cadences through the first part of this film is epic and really brings out the feeling of marine corps training even more. first half of this movie is mesmerizing.
