Theatrical version is fine. If you think this movie is crazy you need to watch the MAKING IF APOCALYPSE NOW - Hearts of Darkness. You will not believe the stories, issues, problems and personalities this film had that no one knew about. Insane. There is also tons of Easter Eggs in this film before they were a thing in modern movies. AND there is some crazy theories that this film was the PREQUAL to Taxi Driver. Think about that for a bit...

One of the hundreds of interesting things to notice in this is that the chopper pilot who talks to Kilgore over the radio just before they break out the 'Ride of the Valkyries' music for the dawn attack on the village, was R. Lee Ermey who was the drill instructor in 'Full Metal Jacket'.

Larry Fishburne lied about his age to get the part and told the casting people he was 16, but he was only 14. It's alleged that Dennis Hopper introduced him to heroin out in the Philippines.

The soldier who appears for a few seconds at the bridge to drop off mail to the boat was Christopher Walken's brother Glenn Walken. If you look closely enough he looks a lot like his brother.

It's interesting that the filmmakers that I have seen react to this film all talk about the cinematography and sound, and those were the two things that it won Oscars for.

A couple more bits of trivia: if you look carefully in the early scene where Willard is being briefed about the mission, Harrison Ford is wearing the name Lucas on his uniform, which was a nod to George Lucas, who was originally supposed to direct the film, but he backed out of the project to direct another pet project of his own about some kind of sci fi film... Star something... and he and Francis Ford Coppola had a falling out as a result for years, but later reconciled. Plus, Captain Willard's name, Benjamin Willard was made up of the first names of Harrison Ford's two sons at the time, Benjamin and Willard.
