I seem to be on a bit of a phase of exploring this sort of art nouveau inspired framing.  BUT you'll notice that I don't actually decide to draw a frame for the composition until a little later in the process.  I think she could have worked well as a piece with a full environment as well, but having this art nouveau inspire framing works especially well with a center focused composition like this one.

For this color scheme and the character, I started with painting her skin a mostly gray color.  But what really started help pop the gray and made her feel alive despite the desaturated color of her skin, was popping in the oranges, especially along areas of core shadow on her skin shading.  It's amazing how just popping in that accent color can make an unusual base color for the skin feel vibrant and living.

You may also notice in the process that the little black bird started out as a red cardinal, but I felt that the red was clashing with the other colors in the piece, so I eventually decided to scrap reality and just make the little cardinal black instead!  She has antlers and pointed ears, why not have a black cardinal?
