Alan:

Hello Heroes!

February! It should be cold and snowy outside! But it’s been… April weather for us in Utah? I need to do yardwork!

What I’m reading!

  • Iron Gold by Pierce Brown. The first of the 2nd trilogy of Roman Empire But In Space books from Pierce Brown. These books are fun. The technology doesn’t make a lick of sense, but they’re super-fun. Kinda like Star Wars, but without Space Magic. And it gets me my daily thought about the Roman Empire!
  • Defiant by Brandon Sanderson. I’m a huge Brandon Sanderson fan. I’ve pretty much loved every book of his I’ve read (nearly all of them). The Skyward books… just didn’t do it for me. I really liked the first one. And it’s been diminishing returns since then. Bummer. But it did give me a really solid idea for a space fighter pilot movie (series?) so… Maybe not all is lost?

What I’m watching!

  • Bob Marley: One Love. I wasn’t a fan. It’s a muddled story, and the non-linear aspect was poorly executed. I understand that they were trying to avoid the cliches of a music biopic, but they A) didn’t, and B) made it hard to understand what was happening, who people were, and why they were important to Marley. That being said, of course the music was great, and the performances from the two leads were GREAT. When the script gave them things to do.

What I’m playing!

  • Stupid amounts of Retro Bowl. Seriously, I’m starting to think I might have a problem.

Really busy this month, but most of that busy-ness is getting stuff ready for you all! 2024 is going to be an exciting year!

Watch Movies! (And television, and read books, and play video games)

Jono:

Hi everyone! This month I'm super excited for the final season of Star Wars: The Bad Batch as well as the return of The Rookie. Two of my favorite shows!

In the case of the former, Dave Filoni and company are working overtime to explain The Emperor's return decades later in the canon, and it's kind of working for me!

In the case of the latter, super fun cop show that somehow strikes a balance between honoring decent police officers while addressing major issues with race, violence, and sexism in that field. Come for Nathan Fillion, stay for the whole ensemble!

Went to see Bob Marley: One Love this week. Too many biopic cliches, but the performances and the central theme (your struggles are the source of your power), along with a KILLER soundtrack, made it worth the watch in my book.

Taking a break from all my clinical reading to enjoy some classic literature: The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas. One of the greatest novels ever written, and an inspiration for so many other beloved stories!

What about you all? What have you been watching and reading this month?

Reading Long Live The Pumpkin Queen by Shea Ernshaw. The words are so gloriously rich I wish I could physically slide in the pages, and swim in this book. It is beyond a wonderful sequel to Jack and Sally's story after The Nightmare before Christmas. Watching (again) 1943's The More The Merrier directed by George Stevens bc it's charmingly funny and filled with lovely details of the time. Also watched Malena starring my favorite actress Monica Bellucci. So beautiful and sad.

Would you consider doing Coda? I cried more than Alan.

Just finished up reading “A Man’s Search for Meaning” based off of Joni’s many references throughout your videos. It did not disappoint. I’ve read many a Holocaust Memoir and this one just hit different. 100% recommend to anyone who hasn’t picked it up yet. I also am working my way through “The Awe of God” by John Bevere and it’s another inspiring yet challenging read. This is a Christian book, and it may not appeal to other worldviews, just a fair warning. As a Christ follower, I found it to be a very insightful look into what it truly means to fear God in a biblical sense, and a useful tool in my personal introspection of my current spiritual health. Love everything Cinema Therapy has been doing and the beautiful community it has formed!

Glad you enjoyed Man's Search for Meaning! May I recommend another Holocaust memoir that's recently become one of my favorites? The Choice, by Dr. Edith Eger. Have a look!
