How do you build healthy, compatible relationships? How do you find confidence and love yourself?

Licensed therapist Jonathan Decker and filmmaker Alan Seawright are serving up a Valentine’s Day special, weed rats… No, Shrek! It’s movie couple therapy! They compare Shrek and Fiona’s meeting with traditional fairytale tropes. They discuss how Shrek learns to value connection, while Fiona learns to accept herself, and they become conformable and compatible together. Or as Alan says, they revel in their crapulence. The early 2000s animation may not hold up well, but the story sure does. Who wants a movie couple therapy on Shrek and Fiona’s marriage?

I won’t be able to watch this for a bit - but I wanted to say thank you! I have been waiting for this episode for a while :)

Smeeson

Okay, but the interrupted kiss is also the most realistic. 🤣 I have had that happen 100 times.

Oh I loved it! Another great Episode. And even though it can be hard to get rejected, it's really important to stay true to one self and it's a great feeling to just be you. And who doesn't like it, can and will leave eventually 🙈

Kate Larson

Ahh thanks for the shoutout!! Loved the episode and I couldn't agree more! I want someone that loves me for me! My goofy, nerdy self!!

Emily Snell-Salvaggio

Looooved this episode. Shrek was a big childhood film of mine and I grew up with the sequels as they came out. Really looking forward to the next Shrek review! These are some great points being made I never considered when watching before.

Andrew Feistner

I’ve always heard of the covered wagon be called the Dutch oven

Ayesha Ali

Loved this episode. When it came out, liking Shrek was a bad thing, but so many people secretly liked it.

I also am not a fan of the trope "Partially heard conversation misinterpreted to drive the plot" (thinking of the partially overheard phone conversation in "White Christmas"). But the million dollar question is, what would you substitute for this to get the tension/resolution it provides? For Shrek now, be specific :)

Ayesha Ali

Also, I was told you make no money writing screenplays, which is why I never looked into it. How do you apply to become a screenwriter?

I recently watched this movie again and I noticed the animation was a little potato. However, I freaking love this movie and it has not changed my opinion on how great it is. The editor had me rolling again, and I really appreciated the collective agreement that the dig at a certain person was fresh (and hysterical) for that time period. I agree, all the tropes highlighted need to die asap!

Lol. The "Covered Wagon," I renamed the "Covid Test" due to the loss of smell during Pandemic times.

Farting is healthy do it when you need to! :'D

I love Shrek...always have, always will. I agree and disagree about the miscommunication trope. I agree that it doesn't need to be done but it's also human nature to make assumptions as I've learned that unconsciously "what people say is about them but what I hear is about me." So if I was to rewrite that portion of Shrek, I would have had Shrek bang on the door and confront Fiona about what she just said (without opening the door) and make it about Fiona not wanting to be vulnerable (another universal human response) and letting Shrek know it wasn't about him either. In my opinion, this miscommunication trope is very aggravating in both White Christmas and Bourne Identity.

Desireé (Speak91)

The makeover trope where all the girl has to do is remove her glasses and wear a dress and she’s totally different or suddenly the most attractive person ever is kinda real life. in high school I used to get perms to straighten my hair. I often wore it up in a ponytail with glasses. On picture/ID day, I had my hair down and no glasses. But on a few occasions when I showed my student ID, teachers thought the girl in the ID wasn’t me until I removed my glasses.

I appreciate this look at healthy dating. Thank you. 😊

So you guys said "In the next one" indicating Shrek 2. Does this mean we're gonna get to see you dive into all of the Shrek and Puss in Boots movies? :D

Asteria Bates

I was never really into Disney princesses, that was my sister's thing. But GOD did I love Shrek! This series is so close to my heart as someone who grew up the loud, weird, fat kid. I'm so excited for the marriage episode :)

Very sweet.

Marie-Soleil Cha

Some people told me it was called a Dutch Oven. No matter what the name, I have a good sense of smell and I would really hate if someone did this to me hahaha!

Anonymous

Hahahahaha! Yeah. It's not fun. Speaking from experience. I used to call it a Dutchoven too. 🤣

Loki Dokey

Haha I loved it and I'm so glad that you are doing more of these. I'm super happy with my partner, I can be my weird self around him and geek out about stuff and he would just roll his eyes and starts smiling 🙄 😄 We both revel in our crapulence and he farts all the time when I'm around. Normally I would flee or cover my nose with something while making a joke about that disgusting smell but last year I started to rank his farts like Dude, that was only a 3 that's disappointing.... Oh that fired back really quickly and bad but it's still funny, I always laugh through the misery 😅🤣 Super excited for the next Episodes 😁

Tiana Horsey-Daydreamer

OMG! I'm so glad you like my screen name! Thanks for the shout out! 😍😭

Glam Rock

Omg this so awesome you guys are the best

Zach

Jono that's not called a covered wagon, it's called a Dutch Oven

CinemaTherapy

We are planning to do another Shrek episode about their marriage, and an episode about the new Puss in Boots. But it'll be a few months before those episodes come out.

I definitely haven’t ever found anyone who appreciates me for me, and all the ways that make me unique. Unfortunately, in highschool and college I went the opposite direction and thought that everything was wrong with me (like my hobbies, and my interests) and the things I enjoy doing were what made me undesirable!

There’s many words for that activity! I’ve been all over the US and I’ve heard many people give it lots of silly names :-)

tropetweeter

Agreed, Alan. The Hollywood Homely trope needs to stop being used, along with the other beauty-related tropes like Letting Her Hair Down or Glasses and Ponytail Coverup. We all know the way celebrities look onscreen are not how they look in everyday life anyway, and the whole “she’s only attractive when she’s dressed up” thing is way past due for being left behind.

Kate Ackerley

If anyone who speaks Spanish wants to try one of the masterpieces of voice dubbing you should watch Shrek in latinamerican Spanish. It's great, hillarious and absolute perfection. All of the voices. Eugenio Derbez as the donkey voice is iconic.

Cameron Cross

Love the song during that sunset scene. It reminds me of high school. Lifehouse - You Belong to Me
