Getting the pure stuff is always good, but sometimes the most enlightening part is purifying. Switching to distilling off first to get away from the tar producing impurities is a great technique. Sometimes I buy the pure reagents as a control, and then try different contaminated materials and techniques to see if I can match the properties of the control (physical properties, melting point, refractive index, etc.). Figuring it out is half the fun!
