Great discussion. I fully agree with both of you that Nolan definitely wants connection and seeks that out with his pattern of setting himself up as this hero/idol figure on the planets he stays on. I guess I'm more in the middle of both of your takes? I think Nolan is genuinely seeking out connections, but it's being warped through his culture of Viltrumite "superiority" that's still got it's roots partially in him. I think that's why he didn't leave with his son and instead roped Mark into his whole situation. He didn't expect to feel as bad as he did when he saw the Thraxxian (Insect Alien) corpses. I think so far, Nolan has felt empathy for a few select people like Mark and Debbie, but not for their species as a whole, and I think that was what changed in this episode with Nolan.
