Lews Therin Telamon

I have always hated the Kuina Committed Suicide theory. Not only is there no actual Japanese source for any such euphemism, but it misses the whole point of how Kuina died. The fact that someone so dedicated and so ambitious could be cut down by a random accident with absolutely no greater purpose IS what gives it so much meaning. It's completely unfair that she never gets to have a chance to become the best swordsmaster in the world, and that Zoro will never know whether he's surpassed what she would have been or not. That's what powers the tragedy.

I think it's a bit ridiculous for a master swordsman to go that way in an anime where people survive the impossible constantly but I dislike the theory too. It makes no sense for the character and the point they were trying to make. Not only that, I looked into it and apparently it's just something people made up. There is not an euphemism for suicide with falling down stairs in Japan and Oda himself denied it.

I think the LA handled Merry better. First they make you think he's in on the plot against Kaya then you find out he's a nice goat and then they dare to kill him, which gives more meaning to the ship's name. There's no way he's alive in the anime after that and makes it less meaningful, but the anime has a consistent problem with that...

I think it's interesting, if maybe a bit on the ridiculous side. Just as something like slipping on a curb and hitting your head can kill you, people can also miraculously survive things you'd think would be fatal all on the slightest chances. Yes people tend to survive more things than not in a show like this but I think that makes the accidental death all that more of a shocking wake up call. It's sort of a creeping reminder that it's all fun and games, until it's not. And she was still a child after all.
